Per Thamel: Heupel informed team this morning that Vols would move on from Nico.

Kind of what I'm thinking. Nico's path to maximizing his pay is to return to Tennessee. He'll have to become an expert at apologizing to do that.
Would Heupel even take him back? It sounds like he basically kicked Nico off the team. He could negotiate all he wanted, but he left the team to try to get leverage, and Heupel wasn't going to accept that.

I don't wish ill on Nico, but let's face it. He was good, but he wasn't great, and great is what it's going to take to get to the next level. He wanted to be paid for great when he wasn't. Someone mentioned Henry To'oTo'o, but at least he left when UT was in a coaching change and facing NCAA sanctions. Not because making a million dollars for a 10-3 season wasn't good enough anymore.

Jake Merklinger, here's your chance to step up and be great...wanna be a millionaire?

Sincerely hope he is lit up after every single snap wherever he goes. Rest in piss bud.
Agree, but he will probably go feast on some mediocre conference. He could not handle the SEC. He threw one interception over the middle and was never the same after that. I have to wonder about his mental fortitude.

They got to get this transfer problem fixed. 100% he was tampered with
There has to be people working on this.

That being said, I hope we learned our lesson not to pay players that can’t make an immediate impact. Pay for play. If you cannot contribute, you don’t get paid. Let somebody else pay to develop you. We basically wasted $4 mil+?

Right move by UT and Heupel but I feel sorry for Nico who is trusting his father who seems to be the one spearheading all of this.

Hits home even more because I have a son who is a freshman at UT and I couldnt imagine doing something like this to him.
Yeah, I agree. My son is a sr at UT. Most of the locker room was livid during practice yesterday while a few saw this coming. Apparently there was more smoke that we realized back in Dec as Matthews knew Nico was thinking about leaving.

I've been saying Washington too. Their starter doesn't inspire confidence. No idea what they're spending though.
And Nico does? Apparently he and his crew have been a headache for a long time. What coach wants to have that on his plate every day? Either the coach is crazy or flat out desperate. Or the wild card is the guy who thinks he can correct/manage team Nico. Hard time seeing teams burning up his phone unless he comes at a bargain basement price. Even then it's a real risk.

So now all that Spyre money goes with Nico, and UT and the contributors get nothing out of it.

And...we now only have 2 school quarterbacks with little or game experience.
Josh needs to get in the portal jiffy quick for an experienced quarterback.
Yeah, we need to quit paying top dollar to develop players that have the possibility of not sticking around.

We are not going to get an experienced quarterback that will make a difference out of the portal. We will go with what we got. Hopefully they’re ready…

All those people who criticized Joe Milton and screamed for Nico should feel pretty stupid about now.
I said several times last season that a lot of folks owed Joe an apology. But at the same time, the most popular player on any team when something goes wrong is always the backup quarterback.

It doesn't matter now. Joe is a VFL and Nico isn't, and good luck to Nico wherever he goes, and hopefully Joe gets a chance to kick ass and take names for the Cowboys this fall. I'll have to hold my nose to root for Dallas if that happens, but I will. At least Nico is gone now when there's still four and a half months for someone else to get ready. The last time UT broke an inexperienced QB in against Syracuse, I recall that the season turned out pretty good.

From a potential standpoint, he inspires confidence more than what they have. It's a desperate program since Deboer left. He's going to land somewhere. Some team is going to pay him, just not as much as he wants and probably not as much as he'd have gotten here. There are plenty of problematic players that get shots elsewhere because most coaches at this level think they can fix players and handle problems. DJU got paid by FSU and was their day one starter after being a disaster at Clemson, Guarantano landed at Wazzou, Beck at Miami after being horrendous last season.

I don't think his dad overplayed his hand. I think he had an offer and tried to get UT to match it or walk. these kids don't care what school they play for. I'm not saying Nico didn't like UT but he likes UT less than he likes lots more money.
That’s the very definition of a mercenary and I guess that’s what the future looks like unless they get a handle on the transfer portal. Buckle up because he ain’t the last one.
