Per Hubbs on Buddy Green...

I agree with a lot of what you said but I worry that the fact that Green did not put many (any?) players into NFL will be a huge disadvantage in recruiting (so for this reason I don't know how much more depth and talent he will get at UT compared to what he had in the Navy).

Are you serious?

After reading how confident a few guys are on VQ, guys who've been right lately, I'm thinking it's Sunseri. JMO

I sure hope Hubbs would say so, that would make me feel a lot better :)

man hart is really opening the checkbook for ST coach, 400,000 a year? thats a lot. I'm excited that we are doing this and he is committed to getting better coaches here. IMO i believe Sunseri is the guy, I don't see how Saban could offer him more money, and regardless of his family situation, in a down economy, anyone who offers you $800,000 a year for 3 years, you would be kinda crazy not to take that. I'm sure sunseri made around 200,000 tops at Alabama if that, so thats a huge raise.

That is the point, he did a lot with the little talent he had available, but.... you could be right about recruits not liking him, because they do not know him (they will know him next year:)).

It is not a homerun but it will be a solid hire if true. Will welcome him and move on. My concern is how we finish this class and the season more so than who our DC is.

How can you say solid hire??? Are you ought of your mind. This guy has not recruited against the big boys of the SEC.

How far has this fan base been dumbed down to say that Green would be a solid hire???? Above all else Tennessee needs big time players!!!!

But at least I can take comfort in the fact that if Green is hired as DC then he will only be here for a year then we'll see ya baby!!!

also tagged at Associate HC, although I have no idea what responsibilities that brings. Hopefully he can help with in game time out management.

maybe to early but, it would be intresting to see how our current players would work in a 3-4 defense

Actually if Buddy Green is the hire, there will probably be a lot more Vols fans fallin' off the wagon.

I'm not talkin' bout the bandwagon though.....

I would say if he is hired Dooley might get to feel what Fulmer felt when half the stadium walks out on him at halftime. If we can't get a big time DC and half way through the season start to fall apart Dooley might not make it to the end of the season.

He would be a solid coach (I think), but he would probably need some help with the recruiting ( I think it can be done).

So LSU and Auburn dont recruit against the big boys of the SEC?

The football players have a tour of duty to the military before they can go pro. David Roberson got an exemption in Basketball. But very few others.

Not saying as a fan I would be 100% happy with the hire if it were Green, but I like to read stuff like this, and I am willing to accept both sides of every argument. This e-mail was posted by a guy on TOS that is friends with a guy who played at NAVY, on defense, under Green:

Me:Coach Buddy Green. Give me an honest assessment of his defensive coaching ability. Strengths/weaknesses. Thanks!

Well, it varies widely on who you ask. I think he understands how to make his defensie fit the personnel that he has. At navy we give up a ton of yardage, but not points, because we play a bend but dont break defense. Our defensive backs can't play 80 yards but we can play 30 yards with receivers. So we play alot of zone until they get to about the 30 yard line. We do create alot of turnovers because we are forcing the offense to nickel and dime down the field (increasing the chance of a fumble or tipped ball). Coach green has put together some really strong defenses when he has the right personnel. Navy's defense was bad this year, but only had two starters return on the defensive side, so there was alot of youth and inexperience. In short, I have seen some really good defenses (like top 25 in the country at Navy) and seen some really bad defenses usually due to personnel. He's a good recruiter though, was at UTC as the head coach prior to coming to navy and was the Def Coord. at NC State before that. He recruited me...and let me add, he is a top notch individual when it comes to character, family, etc. On the football field he is intense though

Me: Why didn't Johnson take him with him to Tech?

Buddy wanted to stay at Navy. He had coached big time football at NC State. The coaches love coaching in Annapolis. Great kids to coach, beuatiful town that keeps the wife happy. Coach Niamatalolo has already said he plans on staying at Navy as long as they are willing to keep him. Coach Johnson is ambitious. He said he had accomplished everything he would at Navy and wanted to move to a bigger scene (BCS)

In my opinion, hiring Buddy Green at UT will be a gamble worth taking. The players love playing for him, hes a very likeable guy off the field, but on the field he will get after your ass...on the field he is a tough coach

Bashing the guy before he even gets here (if Green is really our guy) is not going to help in any way whatsoever. Like it or not, UT is going to hire who they see fit. You don't have to agree with it or like the guy, but you might as well get behind him and root for him, because your team's success depends on it

Yeah because thats worked so well for dooley :/

If dooley hires buddy freaking green he is done. Will officially be his Dave Clawson. Seems like Dooley is afraid to have a very well known coordinator that might steal some thunder. If so this will officially start the end for him. We are Tennessee and buddy green is just not acceptable. I hope he goes another direction, I want Dooley to bring us. Back to glory but the more and more I see it the harder it gets to even dream he is anything more than our own version on Shula at Alabama. A stop gap, nothing more.

Sure I'm serious. I think Green will get better players than in the Navy but the difference will be he may be getting mostly 3* with occasional 4* recruits where someone like Shannon who has put a lot of people into NFL would get mostly 4* and 5* players. Perhaps Green would be able to prove over time that he can put people into NFL as well but it would be an experiment to find out (and he is not a young guy like Wilcox so I have some doubts). However, I would ultimately support Green as I support and trust coach Dooley (he has not done anything so far to make me doubt his decision making - with the exception of preparation for Kentucky game but I'm willing to let that one thing slide for now).
