Per Hubbs, "lack of depth biggest concern for this team"

Of course we have a lack of depth! We have an extremely young team, and this is something UT has to deal with every season unlike programs like UA! But we will keep plugging away and one day we will Rise to the Top! :dance2:

Ok boys and girls. If you don't know the answer to the OP's question, then you are either a Nega or a Kool-aid drinker.

I will answer the ? with a ?. If Carson Newman joined the SEC, would they be able to live up to the expectations of the TN fanbase? Or..... what would the expectation of Vol Nation be for CN in year 5?

Because that is exactly what UT is comparable to. The talent level was not here, but you still have to take what you can get. Attrition and recruit, repeat. It is not an excuse, just reality.
My two cents.
P.S. Later Rednecks. and I'll hang up and listen.

This fan base is becoming what Butch says UT is, mediocre. Anything to rationalize him being here, right?

And if UT is CN then wtf are vandy and SC cause vandy and muschump own butch

No. Butch has done a poor job of managing his roster and developing talent. Guys that could provide depth transfer or leave. I like this staff better and think it can develop depth but attrition has left many positions paper thin.

If he would have only let S.J. lead the team out of the tunnel AND stand on the sideline during games, he could have landed Oher and who knows where UT would be right now??

Don't really understand the development question. Different position groups have developed better than other groups depending on their respective position coach. One of the best is Gillespie. Brings up rbs well. Db coach, the worst. It depends on how you fill your coaching staff.

McElwain really hasn't been recruiting the caliber of players Muschamp did to replace the guys who have been leaving, correct?

Probably correct, but IMO his recruiting has been a lot better than the stars indicate. LBs, are a case in point. UF will start three 3* sophomores next year and I think all three will be excellent. One made frosh all-american last year.

Too many variables to say that now. How many DLs are healthy in the fall. Will potential be realized by up and coming WRs & LBs. Will CFA work himself into being a viable sec back between Kelly and Chandler. Answer these questions and you'll know your depth situation. So many things can change between now and fall. Just another sports writer needing something to write about.

You missed the point. My statement was not about Butch. I'll give you another example: Nick Reveiz. He is an VFL and was, probably, loved by the fans while he was here. But the UT of power and glory and history that we all want and some of you "expect", at that UT; Nick Reveiz should have never started a game at. Whose fault is it, that UT got to that point? We are there, whether you believe it or not. Phil, Lane, Dools, and Butch were the responsible HC's while this happened.
As for the "mediocre" fans comment: I'll give you some NFL info for illustration purposes. The Denver Broncos first 16 years were 82 - 147 - 9. Their "fans" sold out the stadium for many years even when the team sucked. Were they "mediocre"? The New England Patriots first 16 years were 100 - 129 - 9. They too sold enough tickets to continue on. Were their fans mediocre? My original statement is still accurate, IMO.

Um it's hard to say that until the fall because players are still returning from injury or are out. Then you have some that may have tweaked something this spring so they shut them down for precautionary reasons and also our newest recruits haven't arrived besides the EE.

Doesn't matter if everyone is healthy. Two lackuster recruiting classes and attrition from the two before those has put us in a position where we just don't have the horses. The window is probably closed on the east until we get Jones' replacement in here.

personally i feel depth is not the issue at all. tink about it

2 qbs both with enought talent to start( arguably 3 with jones)

rb depth is thin but chandler will help that

wr- 2 guys with proven expierience. alot of young talent behind

te- 4 year starter with young talent behind

OL- have arguably 8-9 guys who could all start

DL-3 dts with expierience and picou johnson crosby provide depth
phillips kongbo taylor with young guys

LB- Dk bituli berry mcdowell bates jumper sapp provide plenty of depth ad thats not including freshman

DB- have 4 safties in abernathy TK warrior and berry.
CBs have like 5 guys competeing

its not a depth issue. its more of playing up to potential issue

I think it's all about how you define "depth".

Some are counting bodies at each position and are saying "we're all good". Others (myself included) believe the definition depth inherently includes quality/proven ability to play.

So if one only looks at how many players we have at each position we look ready to go. But I believe Hyams was looking at from the standpoint of "how many players have proven they can step in and play at a high SEC level without drop off from the starter" ..... and in his opinion, it wasn't very many across the board, especially at the positions he immediately mentioned, which were DE, LB and corner. And I believe he's right.

So I kind of agree with you, because I believe we have talented players all over the roster (like last year) and development/getting players to perform to their potential has definitely been an issue.

But I kinda don't agree with you, because, as I said, I think "depth" is more than just numbers with potential...... to the contrary, I think it's actually multiple players at each position who have already shown they can do it/can play at the high level needed to compete at a championship level. And we simply don't have that at most positions right now.

The reasons for losing to teams you traditionally don't lose to are few and far between now. CBJ better make the right decision at QB, that's all I know.

What makes you think he will do that?

His past decision making indicates that he will start the wrong guy then after a couple of losses start the right guy and win after realizing that the second guy should have been starting all along.

Read about 5 or 6 pages but not everything. The issue is recruiting and/or development. The problem associated with lack of depth is the quality of the depth. They can put a competitive first 22 on the field but when they have to go to a backup player there is a huge fall off in the quality of play.

You saw this last year with JRM and Sutton. They shuffled different players out there trying to find someone that could duplicate the numbers of JRM and Sutton. They could not do so.

This season the same issues will be present. front line player can't play and the dropoff in play will be significant. The dropoff in production from the big 6 positions they lost players will be telling in the first month of the season anyway, perhaps all season.

The issue is not attrition, injuries or graduation. The issue is quality of recruiting and then the quality of development. That is the root cause to the "lack of depth" comment.

Now off to the golf course

I disagree. Whether they're out there this spring or not, most of the players missing are unproven as far as playing the high level necessary for us to win the division or the conference. KMac is unproven, Brandon Johnson is unproven, Tuttle is unproven if for no other reason because he can't stay healthy, and as such, hasn't produced enough to say he's quality. Abernathy showed flashes last year but was inconsistent so he's ultimately unproven imo. Etc, etc.

Your excuses are mediocre, to compare Tennessee's talent to Carson Newman? Butch is going into is 5th year as Head Coach here and is still struggling to develop quality depth. But to make you feel better about UT's Carson Newman situation, Butch is recruiting 5 star hearts and he's not worried about 5 stars.
