Per Hubbs, "lack of depth biggest concern for this team"

If CBJ ever wants to win 10+ games in this league, he will have to able to recruit quality depth (especially on D). Lets face it, last year after guys like DKJR, JRM, Sutton, Tuttle, Mckenize, & O'brien couldn't play because of injury or dismissal, our defense flat out sucked because the reserves were not that good.

When you lose 3 out of 4 of your 2 deep tackles after T A&M game and you don't have Alexis Johnson available who you are counting on and you are having to use a DE (Kongbo) as a DT, you are going to have a defensive issue. The SEC is a line of scrimmage conference and after the QB, I think the DT is probably the most important position.

especially with the quality that's there in the state of TN this year. he could probably get a top 10 class if he can keep 8-12 of all those 4* TN kids at home.

The problem will be if we are sitting at 8-4 or 7-5 with a 4-4 conference record again at the end of 2017.

How do you sell 4* kids on the CBJ's system that's .500 or worse in conference play, and has demonstrated a lack of development for most of the players in the previous 5 seasons?

True but UF made it to ATL with quite a few injuries of their own. Need better depth IMO.

Florida and Tennessee are similar this year.

New QB, losing lots of talent on defense, weakness at DL, both should have a good OL, etc

Two fold issue though: Depth & Experience.

WR: Experience
OL: Neither just need to be "Rocked" into S&C shape
RB: Depth & Experience
QB: Experience
DB: Depth (need a Lockdown or two to emerge) but mainly I think/hope Coaching, Safety position should be fine.
LB: Somewhat experience (Will-OLB), depth is much better thanks to Jumper getting valuable reps last year.
DE: Depth & Experience. If Phillips is healthy, I think we have 3 good ones though.
DT: Depth, we really need Picou and Alexis to step up
ST: Just need a solid PR, I think Calloway looked good doing it last year. Healthy Josh Smith could but do we want to risk him if he finally gets healthy?

There's some good room for discussion, talking experience and quality. But "depth"? Nah. Here's why not...

Using current online official team roster (not necessarily 100% accurate, but best available to us):

QB - 5 (5.0 depth)
RB - 5 (5.0 depth in 11 personnel)
TE - 6 (6.0 depth in 11 personnel)
WR - 12 (4.0 depth in 11 personnel)
OL - 17 (3.4 depth)

DB - 12 (3.0 depth at 4-3 ... 2.4 depth at nickel)
LB - 11 (3.7 depth at 4-3 ... 5.5 depth at nickel)
DL - 14 (3.5 depth)

(totals 82 on roster, not counting specialists like kickers and holders ... that number will balloon by up to 25 more as we approach the season)

So we have plenty of "depth" to cover the two-deep at every position group. "Depth" is not an issue, even without the incoming class and fall walk-ons infusing the squads and growing the program to over 100 players.

Again, it's simple: Hubbs' comments notwithstanding, any talk of "lack of depth" of college football programs in the spring is a bit of a waste of breath. It's just kinda nonsensical. Far better to focus on quality and experience discussions.

That's why he gets $4mil a year. And I didn't say it was a forgone conclusion. But that opportunity is there .

And I wouldn't send you on any recruiting trips :)

So here come the excuses.... The buck stops with Butch. He's had enough seasons even with attrition and injuries to be successful and move this program forward. He's botched too many games for whatever reason you want to come up with, and now we are paying for it. What has he done so far that has been special that any other descent coach could have done here with this brand? People quickly forget or don't want to talk about recruiting... and the lack thereof for the class we just signed. 3* U. The coaching staff for the past 3-4 years is paid to develop talent... whatever talent they are given, they are expected to maximize it... I for one do not believe the coaching staff has done a good job of this overall. You can't tell me there have been this many 4* kids come through here the past several years that are just simply over-hyped... Their talent was not been properly developed and now they are either no longer here, buried on the depth chart, or we are still waiting for them to have that "breakout" season... Too much talent has been wasted or not developed.

We will need to pull off some upsets this season if we want recruiting to get any better overall. You can no longer sell kids on Butch's resume. He's run out of catch phrases. He Shat the bed at the end of this season and look at what we signed. It will not be any better I fear if we have another average season. The deck is stacked against him with a new QB and some young talent in key positions, but he made his bed.

Can offer them a black stripe and run around in a big circle in pregame...

personally i feel depth is not the issue at all. tink about it

2 qbs both with enought talent to start( arguably 3 with jones)

rb depth is thin but chandler will help that

wr- 2 guys with proven expierience. alot of young talent behind

te- 4 year starter with young talent behind

OL- have arguably 8-9 guys who could all start

DL-3 dts with expierience and picou johnson crosby provide depth
phillips kongbo taylor with young guys

LB- Dk bituli berry mcdowell bates jumper sapp provide plenty of depth ad thats not including freshman

DB- have 4 safties in abernathy TK warrior and berry.
CBs have like 5 guys competeing

its not a depth issue. its more of playing up to potential issue

well while I agree there's a lot of truth there, we're still talking potential, thus the quality depth issue remains until.....

depth is a problem in Spring practice. When the season rolls around it will much better. There are so many potential starters and starters not practicing this spring. The real offseason though is workouts over the next three months. Getting themselves ready for the physical grind of SEC football.

Thank you for some rational thought. Some of our fans are just an overreaction waiting to happen ...

Can offer them a black stripe and run around in a big circle in pregame...

I still say get rid of the whole black stripe thing... If you have to motivate already high-end athletes who signed a scholarship to play in Neyland stadium and all want to start from day one with taking off some black tape, you are in trouble and have bigger issues. I get it, but it shouldn't be needed at this level. Do other higher-tier programs do this? I have not seen it... Are we the only one's using this junior high motivation tactic? Sheesh.

So why is this an issue in year 5?

probably coach speech to position himself in case of another seasonal meltdown next season like last season.

Hope there is nothing to it. I personally think our roster is stocked as well as any team not called Alabama.

The head coach is the staff. Whatever happens is on him.this should be a do or die season for Jones. Jones, Holly or Barnes will be gone a year from now. Maybe two. Probably not all three. So there it is. If Jones outperforms basketball he's probably back.

And if they all three do really good and are still here - will you leave?

My understanding of the black stripe is that its suppose to promote mentoring of incoming freshmen by the veterans. Its not even between coaches and players but between upperclassmen and newcomers.
