Per ESPN Tennessee to make a run in the playoffs in 2018?

Does it count as having an avg top 15 recruiting class when most of the talent has already transferred out?

They must not be counting attrition. If you factor in the loss of serval elite players (3 starters from the oline alone) it paints a very different picture of a talent starved team.

Agreed. Our rising senior class ranked #4 in 2015. After 3 years of attrition, it’s around #15 now.

Every team deals with attrition, but we seem to have more than most.

Probably better to focus on 6 wins and a bowl bid for 2018, than believe the ESPN nonsense.

I have high expectations for this coaching staff to make 2018 a success but a playoff run? With the same roster that went 0-8 in the SEC last year and the 8th ranking SEC class coming in? No chance in hell.

The 2012 Auburn Tigers went 0-8, 3-9. The next year they won the SEC and played in the BCS title game. Now let me say that I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell that we are going to do that. Just saying that it's not unprecedented.

I came to this thread to post this exact thing. Auburn went 3-9 in 2012 with Chizik as head coach. They went 11-1 in the regular season the very next year with Malzahn as head coach. Recruiting rankings suggest that our team should be much better than what we saw last year, despite the attrition that we've suffered. The right coach should be able to get the most out of them. Fingers crossed.

Just more click bait for ESPN:good!:
I think ESPN actually did some math and every team has transfers. winning is a combination of Talent, Scheme / home advantage.

I think in the Eastern Conference you have three tiers of talent right now.

Tier One is Georgia – they are closer to Alabama than anyone in the East. For this year, I would also put Auburn as Tier One.5 in talent.

Tier Two is Tennessee and Florida – We have Four or Five star players who are competing for every position on Offense and Defense – for a three star player to start they have to beat a highly ranked player out.
Tier Two.5 is South Carolina – closer to TN and Fl than the members of Tier three

Tier Three is Mizz, Vandy, KY – Three stars players are the norm.

The other element is coaching and scheme

Georgia is set here and has the clear advantage. South Carolina has an advantage here over TN and FL. The Vols are changing their defense from a 4 – 3 to a 3 – 4 and we can expect some growing pains, and we are switching from option to a pro style. FL will have similar pains but not quite as radical on both sides.

Of the lower tier teams they are all more set than TN on Coaching and Scheme.

We play at GA, Auburn, SC and Vandy. The above in consideration this mostly means a difference for SC and Auburn. who are close to talent and more set schemes than TN

So to me it would be an upset for this year if we pull of a wins against GA, Auburn and SC. I would say Florida is a toss up and W. Virginia we should be slight favorites with better talent and at home. We should also be slight favorites with KY and Mizz at home. Lets say we should win at least two or three SEC games this year. Finishing third in the East.

So I think it is reasonable by the numbers to expect 7 wins this year. Once scheme is in place next year and if we can raise the talent faster than FL - which is a challenge we hopefully start to compete for the East

Thank you! It's called exuberance. I've seen it here every season since '08 and it's what keeps me coming back. UT could field a team of girl scouts and some Vol fans would be figuring out a way they could beat Bama. I say this with affection. I love the UT spirit. Hell, they didn't recruit at the Alamo, they fought with what they had! :salute:

Actually the Alamo got five star recruits from Tennessee. They just had too small a roster to win.

We have a bunch of whiny fans who apparently can't read.

Since when does " has enough talent to make a run" = " Will make the playoffs"

We have talent. That is what the article points out. And all teams have attrition.

We're a team that has "punched below it's weight" for years. Bad coaching and little player development. There is the potential for a dramatic increase in performance this year if Pruitt is the real deal. Playoffs? Possible in an alternative universe. If we were in any conference besides the SEC, we could get there.

No we don’t. And our attrition is well above average. 3 career ending injuries and 1 transfer from our Oline alone last year.

When people are making idiotic arguments and buying into dumb conspiracy theories I will comment on it if I feel.

The article does not say we will make a run even one time. People are all upset but apparently didn't read or could not understand what they read.

ESPN also does not hate us.

Two dumb arguments going on in this thread.

His arrogance is nearing d4h levels

I have never claimed to be some type of expert, nor do I make all types of crazy prediction threads
