Per Austin Price, the (already) infamous first play actually wasn’t Brandon Kennedy’s fault

That's nice. Now Pruitt has "good tv show guy" to go with his other accolades. At the end of the day Vols are on the wrong end of a 40-14 nationally televised beatdown. My gawd have we seen enough of these already? 10 guys on defense on multiple occasions. THAT is totally unacceptable. I saw a badly coached, undisciplined football team. A horrific first showing for the new coach. I did not expect...THAT. But...he has a southern accent and talks tough like a real coach so that's good enough for many here. I know none of us are gonna enjoy the insane beatdowns coming our way from Alabama and Georgia...to mention just a couple. I for one am so sick and tired of that. Yesterday gave no indication that that trend is going to end anytime soon...and this new coach provided no evidence he even remotely has the ability to stop it.

Well GTFO

He said Kennedy wasn’t responsible for the missed defender (Bigelow), Ryan Johnson was.

Johnson missed his assignment and ran downfield like he was run-blocking.

Not game-changing news, but I felt it was worth mentioning since I already accused my Bama fan friend of planting Kennedy to sabatoge our program.

It was already sabotaged by Haslam and Hamilton ten years ago. But now I feel bad for blaming Kennedy. Seems stupid though not to have your big ole center take on Bigelow right in front of him vs Johnson coming across to block on a quick screen like that. But I'm not an offensive guru either, so there's that.

The refs called it a lateral due to the fact the momentum of the WVU player carried G back while in his throwing motion resulting in the pass hitting the ground behind the 22, the WR was lined up ahead of G ready to receive the pass, but had to come back to cover the ball.

The refs called it a lateral because the ball went backwards from where JG was.

You do remember he took over the worst team in the history of Tennsse football ? Sure, did Pruitt make some mistakes, of course he did. Even Saban makes coaching errors but he has enough talent to overcome them. We have less talent than any team in the SEC not named Vanderbilt or Kentucky. Give Pruitt at least 3 years before saying he can't coach.

Include Mizzou. Barring injuries, our young secondary will be much improved by Nov 17. Not saying we shut down Lock, but he won't go Grier on us.

No one's proclaiming Pruitt the savior of Vol football yet, but those of us with common sense know that one damn game is not enough to proclaim him a failure either. It's called rebuilding for a reason. We all agree losing sucks, but if you were expecting an immediate turnaround, you're expecting too much. We're limited on talent which is why we had true freshmen starting on defense. We played a team very deserving of their ranking with a QB very deserving of his hype. In the long run, Pruitt may not be the answer, but making that call after one damn game is ridiculous.

to djjohnnyg,I'm so sorry that you are so sick and tired of a coach with a "southern accent".You stating about how sorry this team is and how badly they played.Question,is the nyg at the end of your name for the New York Giants football team. That being the case, you should know about lousy.Maybe your new coach can make them a great team in year one.Pruitt has 18 of his desired players on this team of "ours".He is trying to fit in the others he inherited to some scheme. You didn't see an abundance of the 3-4 that is his preference. It will happen.

Ugh. You had to say that. Now he’s literally going to throw for 1 more yard than Grier, because that’s how life works when you’re a Tennessee fan.

The only calls I think the refs missed were some penalties against WVU, they were holding a lot and that peel back block to the dome piece of one of our Defenders was clearly a targeting call. Good thing refs always review calls after the games. Because honestly a lot were missed.

Edit: WVU also had a lot of late diving on the piles. Which never got called. But we still got smoked so none of that matters.

It was an ACC crew... just sayin'.

The humorous thing about all this is how much Gary Danielson roasted Kennedy for it. The guy makes 5x as much as Austin Price to do what he does, but had the whole world blaming the wrong guy.
Danielson doesn't let facts get in the way of what he thinks is a good comment...or the chance to roast someone.

The Legion of Doom strikes again. Let the man build the program that Hamilton and Haslem destroyed. The program has never recovered from Lane running off 55 players, signees and commitments. It takes time to fix something so broken. Pruitt will get er done, aight!!

or

We can start another coaching search, lose the recruits we have and become a serious laughingstock even worse then before.

I think a lot of the doom and gloom is based on the fact of what we saw Saturday looked just like what we didn't want to see .... last years team.

Soon as the game was over, that's what I thought I had just seen. After a little reflection, and a lot of sensible posts, I've come to my senses, just short of the ledge.

Look where Johnson is compared to the rest of the lineman. Pretty much confirms he busted his assignment.

Oh, Johnson certainly went running past the defensive linemen. He thought his assignment was to get a block on a LB. For sure.

But that doesn't necessarily mean Johnson's to blame.

Coach Pruitt said the first play from scrimmage was a run-pass option. That Guarantano checked to his pass outlet in the right flat.

If that's true--and there's absolutely no reason we shouldn't believe our coach remembers it well--then Johnson didn't get the word. Johnson goes further than 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, something blocking linemen don't do during a potential pass play. That means he thought it was a run play.

So...miscommunication. And miscommunication could break down anywhere.

Occam's Razor says yeah, Johnson probably wasn't paying close enough attention, executed a different play than everyone else. That's what I'd bet happened.

But we can't be sure. I'm sure the coaches and linemen know by now, having looked at the game film. But doubt they'll ever tell us.
