Pennington's Response

I notice you don't attack what was said, only the anonymous people who said it.

If you discredit them you think you discredit the article, even though everything in the article is consistent with what has been said about the program since 05.

Then claim your not trying to defend Fulmer by doing that.

Explain this to me. If I didnt criticize what he said, does that mean I acknowledge that the content is pretty well accurate?

ANd If I acknowledge that his content is pretty well accurate, just how am I defending Fulmer?

This is my take on the whole CPF saga...whatever happens, happens. Im not going to cry, whine, complain, throw a tantrum. I am a VOL fan and I will remain one no matter who is coach.

WHat I read in Saturdays KNS is what I expect to see from a poster on here or any other VOL message board. Nothing more. There was no expressed opinion. There was nothing to follow up on. Telling us they suck, isnt news. Telling us things have changed, isnt news.

Since JP presented it as a bunch of quotes from others, it cant be classified as an point of view. Since he didnt name names or cite sources, for all anybody knows, its a fabricated story.

Im a firm believer in the freedom of the press and YES, I do know confidential sources play a part in it...as long as it leads somewhere. WHere does the JP column lead?

I truly haven't followed close enough, but when did Fulmer come out with this "Cheap shot" attack on Pennington? Was it after the win against Georgia, or was it before the game. My contention has been that if it was after it was because he had "won" and he had just proven that they could coach- on the other hand, if he came out with this before the game, I respect that.

If it did happen after the game, and had TN lost, would he have said anything at all.

JP isn't employed by the KNS. He writes randomly on there from time to time and not all of his pieces "lead" somewhere. Why do they have to? It's sports, not real news. You are taking this article way too seriously.

SO I have the problem now?

What if your local paper printed a story on your family, using nothing but unnamed sources? They didnt particularily attack YOU or and other member. Just the family.

As far as taking it too seriously, somebody should. Yep, its just a sports story. We give them the power to print highly suspect material in the sports pages, dont you think it will spread to the front pages?

I would love for that to happen. Since I am not a public figure or personality I would simply go down to the hardware store and purchase a rake in anticipation of all the dough coming my way via libel lawsuit.

It came out on gameday and I've yet to see a pregame press conference from CPF.

Explain to me who attacked CPF. Are you a family member of CPF?

What will spread, the fact that are program has been declining over the last 10 seasons?

The story even stated those players thought CPF was a good coach and could turn things around, you must have skipped that part.

I would also like to add that it is a "story" in the sports section because it is what people are talking about. When message boards and call in shows are blowing up with people questioning Fulmers leadership; then of course it is a story when someone says "Look, even old PLAYERS are saying they have noticed a lack of fire in this program"

Yes, Reading 101 meets in Room 207 in 30 minutes.

If this is redundant of prior posts, I apologize. I haven't read the whole thread.

The use of "unnamed sources" is not inherently poor journalism. This is a fine practice when reporting on FACTS which can be independently verified. But, this particular article is a piece about peoples' opinions. Thus, the newsworthiness of the article is directly tied to the identity of the individuals polled. For example, are we talking about a Peyton Manning or a C.J. Leak? It matters because, in this example, one has an opinion we might be inclined to heed, while the other certainly doesn't. So, if the journalist can't get the former players to go on record, he may as well not publish the piece.

what I hear some of you saying is that you have no respect for at least some former UTK football players.

Agreed.

I can not see why you can't get over the fact that Pennington called these former players to see what their take was, letting them know it would be anon. so he could get an honest reaction.

It wasn't a case of former players lining up at his office door wanting to tattle like some of you hinted at.

Excellent post. QFT

If you're asking me, my answer is yes and no.

I may respect a player for what he did for the team while he was around, but I might not have any reason to consider his opinion on the state of the program to be any more valid than anybody else's. Relevant questions include: (1) what does he know about how current practices are run; (2) what does he know about how current players respond to coaching; (3) how many practices has he viewed (is it one or is it consistent monitoring); (4) what does he know about the incoming class, the red-shirt class, and the young players who are not currently playing; (5) does he have an axe to grind against any of the current coaches; (6) if he is comparing practices today to practices in his day, was he more successful based on the old methods than he could have been now; et cetera. There are lots of fact-intensive questions to be answered. So, it's not really a question of whether I respect the former players. I just want to know the bases for their opinions, which you can't really guess at if they are unnamed in the article.

Edit:

To be fair, I don't think the article really overreaches, and I think Fulmer might want to prepare a rational response to some of the stated criticisms at the end of the season. If there has been a change in the weight lifting philosophy, for example, I'd like to know how the coaches view that.
