Penn State

I'd like to know in what order Matt Campbell was in the search. 98.9 percent of the names mentioned were to get raises where they were and make Sexton some Christmas money. Campbell seems to be a good hire if it happens.

He’s the guy I thought LSU was gonna go after once Lincoln Riley said no.

He’ll do well at Penn State

He continually has put guys into the NFL at a rate similar to the Bamas, UGAs, and OSU. So lets stop this narrative that Clemson was overrated in his run. He had elite teams with elite players. Only recently with his aversion to the portal and NIL has he started to slip.
And he still lost a game every year to a team with inferior talent. He was not making 5 straight 4 team playoffs if he was in the SEC from 2014-2020. Yes he had great talent, but so did 3-4 teams in the SEC at that time.

3-4 other teams? Sorry but no. LSU did for 1 year. Clemson was absolutely on par with Bama and UGA and beat Bama at least twice.

They only had to play 1 a year. You’re ignoring the week to week grind that the SEC is/was. You think they roll through the SEC 11-1 if they had to play Bama, UGA, LSU, AM, AU in consecutive weeks? If you do then we’ll agree to disagree.

These are class rankings from 2014. The reason LSU was going 9-3 isn’t because they were under talented, it’s because they played half the other teams on this list. Clemson’s avg class during their run was 10th, UGA was 5th, Bama was 1 etc. 4-5 SEC teams avg higher, more elite classes than Clemson, but only 1 could get in the playoffs. And again, you’re ignoring the depth and experience they were able to develop playing nobody 9 out of 12 weeks. Find me an SEC team who had 90 guys (that’s freaking walk-ons) with an entire game worth of snaps built up over a course of a season over the last 30 years. They weren’t throwing the 2nd-3rd stringers to the wolves when someone went down, they had already been on the field.

Matt Campbell. Hmmmm.

He’s a good coach but it feels like he’s leaving Iowa State similar to Mike White leaving Florida for Georgiain basketball—staying one ahead of the hot seat.

The hot seat? He’s the most successful coach in Iowa State history. His seat was ice cold.

lol. Matt Campbell was no where near the hot seat in Ames. That was his job for however long he wanted it.

Well I’m back from the party. Most are content with Campbell but they really wanted BYU’s coach.

They did confirm the Sexton rumor. Apparently early in the year Sexton was trying to get an extension for Franklin (before they lost any games) but the biggest name on the board shut that down and got into a shouting match with Sexton.

Apparently Franklin was already talking about moving on from Penn State if they didn’t get to the NC this year and once they started losing games, he basically checked out which does explain how they lost to teams like UCLA

Sexton was the one that leaked that Penn State was going to hire BYU’s coach to give them time to counter offer and keep him. He was angry at Penn State and wanted to mess up their search

This is all from a reliable source but obviously you can choose to trust it or not.

I think the NIL environment may have heavily contributed his move. I heard that ISU AD was projected to $150 M deficient in coming year. These smaller market jobs (outside of SEC and B1G) will probably struggle to make ends meet. Just think of exponential growth in travel budget for non-rev sports since conf realignment. See Cal in ACC or Iowa St now having to travel to WV and Utah. CFB was better when it was more regionally aligned.

More evidence--Found this in a Colorado budget thread: Colorado forecasts $27 million deficit after Deion Sanders pay raise, NIL payments

I wonder if Campbell will work at Penn State. He's a good coach, but seems like a fit for a place like Iowa State or KState, not a big time school. Can he recruit at the level required at a major program?
He can apparently recruit enough to make Iowa State somewhat competitive. Iowa State is in a recruiting wasteland. I think Campbell is a good coach but I don’t know that he’ll do any better than Franklin. The majority of Franklin’s losses against ranked teams were to Ohio State and/or Michigan, which have been two of the best teams the last few years. Penn State is generally the second or third best team in the conference and that’s probably not going to change. However, with the playoffs, second or third can get you in and then you have a chance.

Campbell’s offensive philosophy alone will make Penn State better. I imagine his recruiting will do well too. He reminds me more of a Cignetti where he can flat out coach.

Good point. I don’t doubt that he will recruit well. They might have to hit the portal hard this year since the timing of the hire affected this signing class. If he can find a good quarterback then I can see Penn State having a good season next year.

Of the remaining true candidates, I think he is a good gamble.

They were tired of him in Ames. Ten years is a long time these days for coaching in one place.

After 10/12 years, we grew tired of both Coach Majors and Coach Fulmer. I can relate.

Good move by Lions IMO.
