Penn State scandal (merged)

It's the part about him telling "a version" of what the GA had told him that bugs me. For example...

GA says to Paterno, "Coach, I don't know how to say this. I just saw Jerry Sandusky having anal sex with a young boy in the showers over at the gym."

Paterno says to AD, "A GA of mine came to me today and told me that he saw Sandusky and one of the kids from 2nd Mile horsing around in the shower."

Maybe not exactly how it happened...could be way off base...but it makes you wonder if the story didn't get altered a bit between Paterno and the AD.
The GA met with the AD and VP a few weeks later and told them the whole story.

Bottom line is, I'm much, much more upset with the AD than I am with JoePa here.

That whole athletic department's culture was set and defined by Joe Paterno. It's a culture in which janitors were afraid to say anything 13 years ago. It's a culture in which a grown man sees a coach raping a kid and instead of doing anything about it, runs home to call his dad to ask him what to do. It's a culture which refused to even sort of disassociate itself from a child rapist even after they knew what he was probably up to.

There's clearly a circle the wagons, protect the shield, omerta-type mentality in the Penn State athletic department. Impossible to think that that tone wasn't set by the old man himself.

Sandusky will get his, by law, and then by the system. If you don't know about the Aryan Brotherhood, look in to then it. He'll get his one way or another. I know they are in Lewisburg. He's done, we all know that.

The old bastard and the others in the cover up are not getting what they deserve, so far. they may but right now justice has not been served.
Every morning this week, I've expected to hear on radio that Sandusky is a suicide...

Given some of the abuse occurred out of the state, this is a high probability.

If the Feds want to get involved, they have to have jurisdiction, which is why alumvol brought up the child porn angle. That's a federal crime. These rapes aren't covered by federal law unless Sandusky took the kid across state lines to abuse him. So, I'm sure the Feds are monitoring this closely and looking for ways to get involved.

Spot on.

I am just saying I personally don't think joe pa is the villain that he is being portrayed as. It was probably a situation he brought it up to his boss, and it was either never really looked into or the ga changed his story or what. Could he have done more, yes? Clearly it's obvious now more should have been done.

But it's weird nobody is focused on the real monster or the victims here.

If joe pa really did hide stuff he will have to answer to the big guy on that one, I just don't think he would willfully hide a predator

So, let's review.

McQuery witnesses the event between Sandusky and Victim 2. Instead of intervening, this 28-year-old BOY (at the time) calls his DADDY and asks him what he should do. He ends up chatting with Paterno about what he saw. Paterno passes it on to his management.

Now, per Paterno, what I want to know is if McQueary told the same details to Paterno that he told the grandy jury per their report. If he did and all Paterno did was pass it on, he perhaps he did "his job" to the letter of the law... wtg, Paterno.

Let's review the details of McQueary's testimony just to be on the same page here. He goes into the athletic facility putting a newly bought pair of sneakers into his locker area while also picking up some tapes to review per recruits. It's a Friday night at 9:30pm. He notices lights are on and showers running. As he investigates, he hears an odd sound which appears to sound like someone clapping or slapping their hand on their leg. He investigates further by entering the showers and then witnesses a boy, which he thinks to be around 10 years old, with both of his hands up against the wall with Sandusky standing behind the child sodomizing him. Think about that. Let those details sink in. If he told Paterno the same details and all Paterno did was pass the buck, do you still think he did enough?

Its possible for the feds to get involved through the 2nd Mile...if he solicited children to join via internet, or any kind of money passed hands from out of state, the interstate commerce angle will trigger. I'd say the FBI is taking a close look at the 2nd Mile, and whether or not they have any probably cause to believe there could be child pornography on his computer.

Exactly. Well said. The GA is already flopping in the Grand Jury indictment. It states that he affirmed he described the events to Paterno as what they were, while Paterno reported to the pres of foolin around in the shower or horseplay. This is gonna get ugly.

Actually more upsetting of the ga.

This is all correct. I agree.

From the indictment

"Victim 4 was listed,
along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl
and the 1999 Alamo Bowl. He traveled to and from both bowl games with the football team and
other Pemr State staff, coaches and their families, sharing the same accommodations."

There was abuse during this trip so it would seem they could have jurisdiction.

This has easily become the biggest scandal in college sports history.

Paterno told the AD who then interviewed the GA a few weeks later and told them they had taken away Sandusky's keys to the locker room and would look into the rest of it. They really did nothing after that.

Yes, that looks like an opportunity. I hope they get involved. The more punishment the better.

Is there testimony from Victim 4 that abuse took place while out of PA on the trip? If so, it does appear to have federal jurisdiction. And you better believe that if there's a chance of this seeing the inside of a US District Courthouse, they will prosecute him there. The federal penalties for this makes anything the state of PA could do look like patty-cake.

That's true. Hopefully the State has uncovered enough info to get probable cause for a search warrant of the computer.

He took some of the victims to bowl games, how does that figure into the investigation?

I work a lot of cases like these, so often times this is how it goes...

The FBI could subpoena computer records on Sandusky's computer in relation to the 2nd Mile and luring kids. While in the course of executing the subpoena/search warrant on his computer looking for evidence in relation to 2nd Mile, they come across child porn. They immediately stop the search, apply for a new search warrant to include child porn, and once the judge signs off, proceed. Then they've got him on possession of child porn, and can try to prove production of child porn...sending it on the internet. It really starts stacking up there.

That scenario happens a a lot. I investigated a federal sex offender last year for sex offender registry violation. Turned out he had multiple assumed IDs. Got the Secret Service involved, and pursued the aggravated identity theft angle. They did a search warrant on his computer for evidence in relation to aggravated identity theft. Unfortunately he wiped his computer before we arrested him, but you can see how the agg ID theft angle could have easily lead to finding child porn on his computer. In fact, we expected it...
