How many spots does TN have available for transfers? I would think that most teams wouldn't have many, if any, spots available.

Watching the DP show, guy from Sports illustrated said that the NCAA will allow any school to take in a player from PNST and allow said player a scholarship even if it puts the school over the 85 limit. The school that takes in the player just has to forfeit another scholarship sometime down the road. Does anyone have more, possibly accurate info on this yet?

this is an unprecedented penalty from a conference as far as I know.

Most experts agree that we will never see the death penalty again. The ncaa didn't fully understand the ramifications when they dropped the hammer on SMU.
Bama was a candidate, but there was too much $$ involved. Bama was just as dirty and arrogant as SMU.


Penn St. is no longer a relevant FB program. Really, they should join the Atlantic 10, where they might could compete in a couple of years. Penn State, for all intents and purposes gave themselves the death penalty.

I think the penalties fit. PSU was harboring a serial rapist in the football team. They aloud and covered up the raping of children on bowl trips and within the football facilities. If this in not a lack of institutional control I don't know what is.

I think this was a matter for the NCAA. We want our players to be protected. I think this shows that, if you have a serial rapist as a coach your dead.

Finally, a post that's really about why I started this thread. mitzuz, that's what I was thinking. I hope we inquire as to certain players' possible interest and see if we grab them. Not sure how that will fit since we have 85 players for the first time in about 2-3 years but. . . .

We're at 82, but all I want is about 2-3 LBs, the kicker, and some young OL for depth purposes.

This is worse than the "death" penalty IMO. When SMU was hit with it in 1987 the NCAA only took a total of 55 scholarships away from them over the course of their sanctions period. PSU is gonna lose a total of 90 scholarships over the next 4 years. That's equivalent to one fully rostered team. I think the reason that the NCAA did not shut the program down was to make an example out of them, they want the country to see the Penn State football get embarrassed on the field for years to come. Hence, why I believe there was no TV ban also. This is not counting the exodus of players that will the program and the recruiting class they have that will crumble. I believe this will have a longer effect on PSU than the actual death penalty had on SMU. Just my 2 cents.

Darn it! Send Dante Philips back to Florida. The former Bama players we got too. Shouldn't have let that USCw defense player last year transfer here either cause USCw was sanction-laden. You should never buy from a store having a closeout or clearance sale because they were unable to sell their products for the original prices due to the stores being unprofitable and closing or the stock not moving,forcing them to sell at a loss. Really, yeah really. :)

Not wanting to wade through a weeks worth of posts, I see where many continue to mention Joe Pa first and foremost in there conversations. I have some questions that I guess I just don't understand:

1) When Sandusky was first accused of this in 1998, he was found not guilty by officials all the way to the state level if I am not mistaken. I know there was at least an investigation by the Happy Valley police dept and they found that there was no case. In early 1999, Sandusky "retired" (I think he was told then to retire or be fired) and was NO LONGER AFFILIATED with the Penn St. football team.
2) There have since been at least 10 kids (young men now) come forward charging him with sexual abuse.
3) There are supposedly emails/memos that tie Joe Pa to a coverup. I haven't seen them nor heard them read on TV yet. Admittedly, I haven't followed it that much and have been away from the tube and internet for the weekend.
4) If Sandusky was no longer on the football staff, where does the NCAA step in to give sanctions? If it is the AD, his boss, and on up the ladder, why does the football team get whacked and not EVERY SPORT? I understand that Joe Pa allegedly had some information and may or may not have been part of a full blown coverup, I don't know, but when this CRIME has NOT THE FIRST THING TO DO WITH THE FOOTBALL TEAM, WTF is the NCAA doing in the middle of it.
5) What happened in Happy Valley is disgusting. It is criminal and those who were involved will be punished. HOWEVER, I am absolutely appalled that the freaking NCAA would get involved and try to get some face time and a little of the punishment pie just to make themselves look good and rebuild a sorry reputation.

I heard it differently, they can maintain a roster of 65 scolarships. They lose 10 (may be 15) immediately and then it rises to 20 over the next 4 years (i.e. they can have no more than 65 scholarships on roster). Then they have a 4 year post season ban. All the players may transfer with no penalty. Many have said they will stay but we will see.
