Penalties will not deter...

The problem with hiring a new coach next year is that we would have to hire people to fill out the staff for 2021. We won't get anyone on a one year contract so we will have to offer 2-3 year contracts. Now when we get around to hiring a new coach for 2022 we will have to buy out existing staffs contracts ( we will not get a coach worth a ship if we are telling them they must keep some of existing staff). There just isn't a logical reason for not hiring a permanent staff for 2021 now, and oh by the way we still have to figure out what happens with Steel when we hire the new coach. I for one don't want the University to try and hire someone based on whether they like Steel on the D staff or not. I just want the best hire we can get and forcing an existing staff member onto the new coaches staff isn't a good look and will limit the quality of hire we make. Now figure we can also forget about the 2022 instate class if we wait since they won't be able to form any relationship with the new staff. It's as usual for Tennessee a big friggin' mess but I don't see where anyone would think it's logical to run with Steel in 2021 unless you are good with him being the next coach. I for one am not, don't care where he's from or where he's coached before if Steel is your choice as our next head coach( not short term) then I don't know what to tell you.Why does it seem we are the only University that makes the bad news bears look like a well oiled machine?

Honestly I doubt we're going to get significant sanctions or anything like that. All the cheaters in basketball haven't gotten anything handed down yet. Miami had 9 scholarships taken away over 3 years, which is not great, but they didn't even get a bowl ban. Ohio state lost 9 scholarships over 3 years as well, and got a bowl ban for 1 year. We might get what Ohio state got, but we've already fired the guy and everyone implicated.

the right coach from coming. We may have to offer a 5 year contract instead of 3 and a higher salary but penalties won’t be the drawback here. Penalties can also be a buffer with no pressure for a year or two for that coach to set things up without the crazies calling for his job. We have money, we have a good roster (not great, but we do have a good roster) and we seem to FINALLY have the leadership in place to be successful. I think some coaches are all over the UT job.
The crazies will be calling for his job after we go 4-8 next year. I love the Big Orange, but our fanbase is nothing but crazies.

The crazies are always going to be there no matter what. Besides, depending on the hire, I don't think we will finish that bad next season. At worst I think we can finish 6-6 or 7-5. I think reasonable fans would accept that given the circumstances.

I'd definitely be happy with that. But it all depends on sanctions and the hire. We need to all be very reasonable here, and I can see, at worst, another 4-8 season, at best, I could see us going 8-4...but like you said, it all depends on that hire and, more importantly, when that hire is made.

This message board will still be filled with “crazies” calling for everyone’s job next season, regardless.
