This week, as part of the university's SouthEast Bank Renewing Academic Commitment program, Price will join three other former standout UT student-athletes, who put their degree progress on hold to pursue careers in professional sports, to earn his undergraduate degree during Tennessee's virtual graduation ceremony, moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Price left UT early, after entering the draft following the 1998 season and will obtain his bachelor's degree in Psychology.
..."Growing up impoverished, once I realized I was good at football, basketball and track, I realized that was an avenue I could take to get a free education," said Price who spent nine seasons in the league with the Buffalo Bills (1999-02, 2006-07), Atlanta Falcons (2003-04) and Dallas Cowboys (2005). "I saw how some guys didn't take the educational part seriously, and always thought they were going to make it to the next level, but if things go wrong you have to have a back-up plan. One thing that they can't take away from you is the academics, and I was going to excel on the field and in the classroom because it'll hold more weight and carry me further in life."
...While Price and the rest of the class of 2020 will not be able to cross a physical stage, his time on Rocky Top continues to guide the 43-year old as he shares what it means to be a Volunteer. "Tennessee is a brotherhood and a family," Price said. "I put that 'Vol for Life' on everything on social media because I am a Vol for Life. Coach (Phillip) Fulmer was always like a father figure to me. After I got done with Tennessee, he has still always been there for me. He still sends my family Christmas cards. Being an athlete at Tennessee, they became an extended family for me. It means everything. It's a way of life."
