After making the team as a walk-on in September, Dusty Mills waited for an opportune moment to introduce himself to Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie. The time seemed right two days into his short-lived UK career.
Mills approached Gillispie, who sat at the scorer's table in the Joe Craft Center gym as the other players headed for the locker room.
"Hi, Coach Gillispie," Mills remembered saying. "I know I never introduced myself. My name is Dusty ..."
Gillispie cut off the freshman.
"I know your name," the UK coach said. "Your name is Ollie."
His new teammates had nicknamed Mills for the player/team manager in the movie Hoosiers.
"If I need to know anything else, I'll look you up in the phone book," Gillispie added. "Have a nice day."
End of conversation.
Mills walked away disappointed.
This week, Mills became the third player to leave Gillispie's first Kentucky team. He cited the new coach's style as why he stopped his teammates from seeking his reinstatement. Alex Legion gave the same reason to explain why he left. The departures call into question Gillispie's demanding style, which he says benefits individual players and the team in the long term.

Pitino and Tubby had the very same issues during their tenure at UK.

On a side note, there is much more to Legion's departure than meets the eye.

I have been so impressed with Pearl's effort to reach out to former players. He seems dedicated to fostering a family mentality within the program. I was always envious of the U's football program in that former players were always going back and seemed to stay involved. Pearl seems to be doing that on the Hill.

Alcohol brings out the best in billy. He is probably one of the (twenty times more friends) that coach cal has.

What a jerk. That is just flat out rude no matter who you think you are. That shows character at its best.

Pearl has been bringing back the old players to UT and making them feel like they are back home again..I had a tear in my eye when Bernard king came back after 30 years....30 freakin years and nobody invited him back until coach Pearl suggested retiring his number...I am thrilled that now Ernie gets his number retired right alongside Bernie....Next would be Dale Ellis I would think...God He was fantastic when He was at UT...Two time all american...Nice to see people taking an interest finally :)

exactly. It's way too soon to be criticizing Gillespie for what he's done or will do at Kentucky, especially if we know very very few of the details.

I learned a long time ago it is not wise to idolize politicians, athletes, or coaches.

Right now Pearl appears to many to be a saint, but everybody has their demons.

Let's enjoy the successes of our coach on this fantastic run, but let's also remember no one is without sin.

You should hear some of the press conferences and interviews Billy G does. He gives a bunch of one word, smartalec answers. He's not energetic or entertaining at all and it's clear he has a great dislike for reporters. That's all fine when you're someone like Bobby Knight and you've earned the right to be arrogant like that, but when you're 14-10 at Kentucky, what's there to be arrogant about?

it's nice to have a few heroes here and there, as far as coaches go i think pearl's a good guy ... unless chattiness is considered a sin... haha

I have forgotten the kids name, but Pearl did the same thing when he arrived. One of Buzz's frosh. players arrived on campus and Pearl told him to get lost you're not the type of player I want, therefore he had to move back home. If he didn't want him he should of let him know before he moved to Knoxville.

What's your point? It was reported years ago by The Rocky Top News, therefore I can not remember the kids name. I think he went to some little school like Austin P.

my point is, do some research before you throw a "some kid" out there as a point

I think he's talking about Dotson. There is a difference between sending a non-SEC caliber player off so he can go to a smaller school and kicking a walk-on off the team in the middle of the season, especially in the manner that Billy G did it. He should have let Dotson know sooner though.

he ran over alot of people in Hendersonville. At least he was a big guy. I got run over by TD Woods when he played at Gallatin.

Rex, I think we went to the same H.S. We were good when I was a sophmore (Carletello, Mondelli, Davis, Nettles, Gorham, Stacey, Erwin, Wharton (Brandon's older brother), and so on, and so on. But we sucked when I was a Sr. and started.
