I was stationed there when they filmed it. It was interesting seeing Japanese zeroes circling Ford island again. Movie was terrible. Go Vols!

Back when the British navy was the "Alabama" of the seas, John Paul "Butch" Jones got a ship and went TOWARD them:

"Early in 1779, the French King gave Jones a ship, an ancient East Indiaman which he refitted and renamed Bon Homme Richard ... he sailed to raid English shipping.

On 23 September 1779, his ship engaged British ship Serapis off Flamborough Head, Yorkshire. During this bloody and desperate battle, Captain Pearson of the (British ship) Serapis, seeing the shambles on the deck of the Bon Homme Richard, asked if the American ship had surrendered.

Jones’s immortal reply “I have not yet begun to fight,”
served as a rallying cry to the crew of the badly-shattered Richard; and they went on to capture Serapis ..."

Says Jones and Shoop at each halftime.

Any allusions to the Vols and WW II should have been put to rest with Dooley and his Rommel reference.

Dooley just made the mistake of comparing ones self to the Nazis. You never make an analogy where you are the Nazis. I think a Dunkirk analogy may have been more apropos.

I appreciate your post, but we all should realize that football is not a war and life and death is not at stake.
Of course, the players pride, the fan's pride and the coaches job are at stake.
We need to shock the world this weekend and beat "O Bama" With a win, Neyland will be rocking when the clock hits all zero's...........

Think you are looking into this a little to deep.

This year we're the WW2 red army. When the man in front of you goes down pick up his rifle and keep fighting. Next man up.

Well if it makes you feel any better they were most likely T-6 Texans. The US primary trainer in WWII. There are very very few Zeros still air worthy and after WWII you could literally walk on an air field, put down a paltry sum, and fly off in a near perfect condition Texan.

It makes me sick to think what they did to all the fighters. I can at least remember P-51s. My dad still flew them after he came back from Korea in 1951 until he transitioned to the F-86. There is absolutely nothing that sounds like a P-51 - one of those things that most people now will ever know.

Agreed. Here in Dallas there is a super rich guy that maintains a small flight museum. Cauvanagh? He has a D model. And his is finished in polished aluminum not silver paint. And I don't think his is detuned either. He can afford all this afterall.

It's a beautiful airplane and when he does a flyover at around 150 to 200 kts it sounds simply amazing. A well maintained Merlin sounds simply beautiful.

To steal a reference from somewhere else. It simply sounds like... victory.
