KNOXVILLE Its not the date Tennessee mens basketball coach Bruce Pearl would choose, but hed like nothing better than to turn the tables on Memphis and Coach John Calipari.
The Memphis game next season at the FedEx Forum will be played on Feb. 23 and be part of ESPNs college basketball GameDay show.
Pearl said he ideally would like to play Memphis in December prior to the start of the SEC schedule similar to last season in Knoxville, which he says the contract between the schools calls for. But ESPNs presence convinced him to agree to this arrangement.
There are times like these where you make an exception, and its hard to pass up ESPN promoting the Tennessee-Memphis game all day long, Pearl said.
The doors will open early that day for the GameDay festivities, and Pearl is already challenging the Tennessee fans to show up in force.
Im putting it out there right now, he said. The general public will be able to come, and my goal is to have more orange in there than Memphis blue all day long. I think we can make that happen.
