JP is regionalized anyways. Having a Pay Per View component, coupled with the CBS/ESPN packages, would get SEC games to a wider audience. This strikes me as an expansion of what ESPN has done with the Game Plan package.(GAVol @ Jun 5 said:You would think that they would maintain at least their national TV contracts and maybe only offer the lesser games on PPV (the JP stuff).
It's the price of a movie ticket. Interest might be a barrier to the success of the project. Price will not. Look at PPV buy rates for wrestling and boxing. If people will pay $40+ for those events, $10 for a quality football game will look like a bargain.(kiddiedoc @ Jun 5 said:I can assure you that at $10.95, there will be no "wider" about the audience, except that a few displaced Southerners will be able to get the games on the West coast. I don't like this at all, unless it would only mean that otherwise untelevised games would be available in high-quality broadcast. A lot of folks can't/won't afford $10 a game, AND you have to have a cable box, which means that other TV's (outside, game room, etc.) won't pick up the signal.

(kiddiedoc @ Jun 5 said:Wait a minute. . . .this just hit me: does that mean that we won't have to sit and stare at the "white suit man" for 5 out of every 15 minutes at the stadium? I completely changed my mind about the whole thing: I love it.
(GAVol @ Jun 5 said:I don't see $10 being a deterrent for too many people.

Then explain the massive buy rates for fights between obscue latino welterweights. Don King and Bob Arum are making millions running events like that every couple of weeks. I like boxing, but neither I nor my friends buy those. The purchases have to come from somewhere.(kiddiedoc @ Jun 5 said:Disagree 100%. Not a deterrent for you, or for me, or for most of the people sitting in front of a computer at a posh office chair sipping on java. But, and trust me here, we are not representative of the "average Joe." We are representative of the people we hang out with and see on a day-to-day basis. BUT, there is a whole other, and large, segment of the population that lives paycheck to paycheck, relies on Medicare and foodstamps, and watches a single 20 inch TV in the family room. They don't have an extra $10, nor a cable box.
I know that's an extreme example, but it's reality. Point is just that many, many people won't buy PPV. You just don't know them.
I think you're greatly underestimating the number of UT grads/fans in other parts of the country. Also, the SEC is usually at or near the top of the board in wagering dollars in Vegas and offshore. If there's a game gamblers have a play on, they'll pay to watch.(kiddiedoc @ Jun 5 said:True, but the appeal is worldwide. Nobody outside of the US, and only few outside of the southeast, and not even many in other Southern states (aside from Tennessee) are going to pay to find out if UT can rebound from a 5-6 season.
(hohenfelsvol @ Jun 5 said:Which would mean you would have to have DirecTv to get it. Either that or hang out at your local bar that has the package and drink $10 worth of beer to breakeven.
