Exactly. I think some fans are fooling themselves into believing we are the Tennessee of the 90's. We are far, far, far from those heights. If we were to somehow get a Venables, I would almost consider that a home run hire. We as a program cannot afford to be picky.

The difference in those times and where we are now is we took chances on two guys who didn’t work out. Just like we are talking about now. Sure some do work out. But some don’t. We have a knack for finding the latter. I personally don’t blame Kiffin for 10 years worth of disappointment. Maybe one or two but not ten. And I think at the time Lane and Monty Kiffin was considered a homerun. We went into the abyss by taking a risk twice. Now we are talking about the exact same thing but just different names. Hopefully our gamble will work out this time. I mean hell even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Right?

Bruce Feldman...oh, the guy who once was a semi-creditable sports journalist. :whistling:

I don't think Feldman has been very accurate during this search. The one person who has been right the most so far is Chris Low from ESPN. Was in Schiano, Gundy, and Brohm before just about anyone. First one to report that Brohm to UT was NOT agreed to after the Hyams report that Brohm was the new coach.

Morris has grown on me. Would be ok with him or Venables. Venables is my top choice among coordinators (other than Tee). His ability to run a defense and develop talent, particularly on the DL, is proven to be a fantastic. And since I'm a firm believer in winning games in the trenches, I really think Venables would be a great hire.

There are two hires for UT that would scare me.

1) Gruden, could recruit on his name very quickly. However, unless your crazy we know isn't happening.

2) Kiffen. Based solely on fact if you can put together a good offence in the SEC with a solid defence is capable of beating us as long as Jalen is our QB. We would not be able to run and gun vs. a good offence (see Auburn gsme)

Cup cakes from the Pac 12/Big 12 ETC... coming to the SEC don't scare me as it's a whole other ball game in SEC.

Fisher is gonna be in for a rude awakening for example.

Sabans from the Big 10. What's the difference between the Big 12 and the Big 10. The play style is very similar. You're DB's can't handle an offense that passes 95% of the time.

Both are Clemson guys. Morris was the OC at Clemson up until 2014.Arkansas is talking to Morris too. Currie already interviewed Morris once. If we get someone like that, I expect an apathy to set in that that we haven't ever seen at UT. I think Miles is a terrible idea, but a ton of people seem fired up about him. I'm not one of them. That's the direction I think we'll go though if Cut turns us down again.
I pray to God cut turns us down again

Sucks to know Kiffin won't even get a sniff because of some bruised egos and hurt feelings. We get to stay on the floor of the SEC for as long as Phil is calling the shots. Bless his orange heart, I hope he surprises me. He won't.

It'd be weird to have a head coach at UT named Chad. Chad is the name of the kid your 14 yr old son plays video games with. He's the nice kid down the street who agrees to keep on eye on your dog while you're on vacation. No offense to anyone here named Chad.

Butch sounds like a trumpet player.

Chad would be our first attemp hiring a successful high school coach. Sounds like Phil.

I know we might not like the guys Fulmer is interviewing. But these are probably the best guys out there that are interested. It is not Fulmer's fault. I am sure he is doing his best. Why wouldn't he do his best. He is going to be judged by this hire.

Everyone has someone they would like to get, but it is not like going to the car lot and picking out a car.

This was the type of hire it was always going to be. Fulmer won't hire a Leach type, not in his DNA...

I was expecting some good names to reemerge in our coaching search, but sadly they've only gotten worse. Football Scoop is saying Fulmer will likely pick from Morris, Steele, Miles, Tucker, and Venables. Woof. That's a terrible list outside the chance of a Miles/Tee combo. And I'm still pissed that Fulmer killed the Leach deal and it appears we are going to hire someone far inferior to Leach. It is also worrisome that he was ok with Doeren. The absolute floor should be Miles/Tee though. If we go the other routes than we are no better off if it would have been Currie picking the guy, not including Schiano lol.

Brent Venables - just the facts

• In his 21 years as a full-time assistant coach, his teams have 21 winning seasons, have been to 24 bowl games and have won 10+ games 17 times.

• Has coached in five National Championship games. Helped the Tigers to their second national title in 2016 with a 35-31 win over Alabama.

• Recipient of the 2016 Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach.

• Named one of the top-10 recruiters in the ACC in 2015 by Rivals.

• National defensive coordinator-of-the-year by FootballScoop in 2014 and national recruiter-of-the-year by Rivals in 2015.

• One of five finalists for the 2015 Frank Broyles Award after his defense was fourth nationally in third-down conversion percentage (.277), fourth in sacks per game (3.2) and fifth in tackles for loss per game (8.4).

• His 2014 defense led the nation in total defense (260.😎, pass efficiency defense (98.3), first downs allowed (185), third-down conversion percentage defense (27.4) and tackles for loss

• His 2013 defense, which was 24th in the nation in scoring defense and 25th in total defense, led the nation in tackles for loss (122). He also coached All-ACC linebackers Spencer Shuey and Anthony.

• Named one of the top-25 recruiters in the nation in 2013 by Rivals.

• Named one of the top-50 recruiters in the nation in 2013 by 247Sports.

• Named one of the top-10 recruiters in the ACC in 2013 by Rivals.

• His 2012 defense held opponents to just 34.0 percent on third down, 24th-best in the nation.

• A big reason Clemson has won back-to-back ACC titles for the first time in 28 years.

• Coached 13 years (1999-11) at Oklahoma and three years (1996-98) at Kansas State. He was also a graduate assistant coach at Kansas State for three seasons (1993-95).

• Served as co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma (1999-03) and defensive coordinator at Oklahoma (2004-11).

• Linebackers under his direction were named Big 12 Defensive Player-of-the-Year five times and Big 12 Defensive Newcomer-of-the-Year five times. He also coached two Butkus Award winners and two other Butkus Award finalists.

• Broyles Award finalist in 2006 when Oklahoma led the Big 12 in total defense and scoring defense.

I rest my case on why he's the best choice.

If you're going after a defensive minded guy then he should be at the top of your list. Also makes you wonder why he hasn't been offered a job up to this point.

It's almost like he wants to validate his view of how football should be played. That's the negative of having a former coach as A.D. He wants someone who is aligned with his football views, while an administrator would look at the numbers and hire a winner.

What numbers were our AD looking at when they unloaded the clown car on us last week?

Paul is fairly knowledgeable for such a weird cretin.

Paul is part of the hair on fire sportscasters that went insane over the Schiano deal. He relishes in the punishment of Vols fans that casued the un-hire. He will spend the rest of his career "I told you so" to Tenn fans. His predictions not so great: predicted we would sing Gundy, then Doern, then the North carolina coach,so he's just guessing like the rest of us.For a Tenn alum to gloat over our bad situation makes him pond scum to me.

I would like to know that the AD/support team took a complete evaluation of what went wrong during the coaches reign of the last decade. Was it recruiting? Was it not getting good coordinators? keeping good coordinators? Did we lose more games due to defense or offense? what can we do to change things? Getting a good coach makes little difference if he can't get good players, good coordinators and keep them? or if he leaves in two years.

I think the really important message to take away from Finebaum recently is that he’s in love with Laura. Have you noticed he doesn’t wear his glasses when she’s on the show with him?

I think without her,he's like the wooden indian sitting outside the barber shop. He proves you can sleep while sitting up. I hear she has to give him CPR before the show to wake him up.

Anyone that thinks Phillip Edward Fuller is going to hire any coach that will threaten his legacy needs their head examined.
