I don't know how reliable Bruce Feldman is but on the drive home today on PF show. Bruce was asked about the coaching situation in Tennessee. He seemed to think the top 2 candidates are

SMU Coach Chad Morris & Clemson DC Brent Venables.

if this is the case hoping Venables

Both are Clemson guys. Morris was the OC at Clemson up until 2014.Arkansas is talking to Morris too. Currie already interviewed Morris once. If we get someone like that, I expect an apathy to set in that that we haven't ever seen at UT. I think Miles is a terrible idea, but a ton of people seem fired up about him. I'm not one of them. That's the direction I think we'll go though if Cut turns us down again.

I was expecting some good names to reemerge in our coaching search, but sadly they've only gotten worse. Football Scoop is saying Fulmer will likely pick from Morris, Steele, Miles, Tucker, and Venables. Woof. That's a terrible list outside the chance of a Miles/Tee combo. And I'm still pissed that Fulmer killed the Leach deal and it appears we are going to hire someone far inferior to Leach. It is also worrisome that he was ok with Doeren. The absolute floor should be Miles/Tee though. If we go the other routes than we are no better off if it would have been Currie picking the guy, not including Schiano lol.

I'm guessing that these names are out there to make it seem like Phil did his due diligence before hiring Les. I think he wants Les and is making it seem like he did a thorough search first.

You’re not going to get Tee for an OC position. His next move will be for HC.

Based on absolutely NO insider knowledge.

The statement earlier this week (or leak) was that Fulmer wanted a defensive mind. I too want a DC. I think Venables has learned from Dabo. He has been part of a championship and he can recruit the southeast. It's a no brainier
IF he wants the job. I read somewhere saying he wants to just be a DC.

Chad Morris is a CBJ equivalent IMO. However he may have the championship . . . ."it" factor. I just think it seems not in line with Fulmers personality.

And with that being said. I'm just talking . . . .

After reading and hearing names like Patterson, Peterson, Kiffin, and Leach tossed around initially, it's hard to warm up to these two.

Venables is a good hire. Way better than Kirby at Georgia and yes I know he’s in the playoffs with CMR’s 31 senior players.

Venables and Morris have resumes that are equal to or better than Kirby Smart and Lincoln Riley had when they were hired by two programs that were in far better shape than Tennessee has been for a while. Either of them could work very well for us. Hearing Morris might be able to bring in some old Clemson coaches that have Tennessee connections like Marion Hobby and/or pull Dan Brooks out of retirement.

I love the passion and emotion. But regrettably, we were always going to wind up with something like this list. If Petersen would come for say, 5 years and $6 million; I think we might be able to get him. But we are not offering anyone $10 million a year (even though I think we should).

I think it is "penny wise and pound foolish" to not go after the very best, but I don't get to make the decisions. Every time I see a list, I ask myself, "Who would come here for 5 years at $5 million and do the best job?" I hope that I am wrong. I hope PF changes the conversation.

It'd be weird to have a head coach at UT named Chad. Chad is the name of the kid your 14 yr old son plays video games with. He's the nice kid down the street who agrees to keep on eye on your dog while you're on vacation. No offense to anyone here named Chad.

Venables is certainly a roll of the dice considering his lack of HC experience but at this point, how in the hell could you guys complain over getting one of (if not the) most coveted coordinators in America?

'Glad somebody's making some sense here, Dudley. It's my belief that Venables is more comfortable as a DC, so a Clemson double-whammy is possible. Chad Morris is a very smart and innovative coach. His one HC stint's not a fair litmus test for him, even though he turned it into a competitive program is a very short time. Look back at his clever game-time adjustments, then dare somebody to compare him with Butch. My fave pick would be Cut or Les as HC with Tee as OC and Venables DC. If not Venables, then Steele followed by Chavis (definitely not higher than 3rd). With one of the elder HCs righting the ship, Tee or Venables/Steele/Chief could "work like heck" to be Phil's HC in waiting...once UT's football monster's back on its feet...or claws or hoofs or ???...as in back in the NC conversation.:twocents:
