Currie and any official affliant with Tennessee would need to ask permission to talk with Patterson. Several coaches have been back channeled through their agents by individuals not officially affliated with the university to gauge interest level.

It’s gotta be 7-8 per.

However for Patterson this about a raise. And, you know that’s about to happen.

Exactly. High level coaching is a high stakes game. These guys know the risks and take it for the potential rewards. The days of hanging onto a diminished coach for a decade or more are over.

Currie talking to Patterson directly? I believe they do.


But others talking to his agent? How does anyone police that? Kinda like (and I hate using this as an example) when Pete Carroll took the Seahawks job. You think Kiffin hadn't already gotten a call from someone at USC other than the AD?

Go back further. When Johnny Majors was at Pittsburgh, you don't think somebody had called him before Bill Battle resigned?

Coaching searches is a somewhat dirty business. It isn't as regulated as the recruiting end, and we know how dirty that gets. But we have been on both ends of it before, so whoever is involved knows what is and is not allowed and acceptable.

It might mean we pay more for him. But with "prior management" out of the way, it means he might be willing to listen. But if or when Currie gets it to an interview, he needs to make a great presentation.

As far as experience, record, and every other box needed to be checked, this is as close to a home run hire we have seen on the entire list. I think he could salvage this recruiting class and minimize the number of underclassmen who want to transfer out. I believe he will be one who brings in a solid staff.

Damn, I hope this happens.

Since coming into the Big 12, Patterson is 48-26. That's about a 54% winning %. He is 11-13 against ranked opponents and a 30-22 conference record. He is 2-2 in bowl games. He is 2-3 against SEC teams while in the Big 12.

Gary Patterson coming to Tennessee is a pipe dream at best. He is not going to leave his well-established program at TCU for Tennessee.

As I think someone mentioned somewhere, they even built a statue of him. Who would leave a program like that?

Just read an article from a Fort Worth news paper where Patterson clearly stated he would not be leaving. Take it for what its worth!
