Our Administration was stupid back then.

Thankfully they’re going to be smarter this time around and hire a proven HC.

*Cough* *Cough* Gruden. :)

Gruden has not coached in 10 years he can not coach college freshmen he has a cushy gig right now I wish all you "GRUDEN FOR COach" people would just come back to reality

Well, I think we can go ahead and cross Patterson off the list.

Well, that was Hamilton. I would ask anyway. Would he say no? More than likely, and we would probably have to offer him 6M per year at least now. Beats even mentioning Kelly, Kiffin, or Petrino.

How is he in any way calling out Tennessee there? He simply said when he interviewed for the UT and Nebraska jobs he got the feeling they had already chosen someone else. the quote makes perfect sense because both of those situations came out not se well and he did ok.

Why do people blow everything anyone says so far out of proportion?

Just gotta laugh. He does sound kind of butthurt still.

With those comments, he just made the list - Gruden’s list.

I have absolutely railed against people for bringing his name up because of the presumed turning down of the job. Now I'll find out they turned him down. Other than the previous statement, I'm at a loss for words. This is the same feeling I got when I found out Santa Claus was not real.

If he still had any desire to come here, then I doubt that he'd be recounting to the press, the ill treatment that he received previously. Not to mention that our current AD was part of the staff that snubbed him.

Saban, "I will not coach at Alabama".

Soon

Edit: also he threw Nebraska under the bus, so I wouldn't necessarily be to pissed about this. I guess since the pitchforks have been out fire em all!

This revelation from Gary Patterson just magnifies the ignorance & idiocy of Mike Hamilton, and some others in the UT Administration. How stupid can these people be??
I’m beginning to wonder if John Currie isn’t just a clone of Hamilton, and is letting The Haslams & a couple of other Big Money Idiots call the shots. I’m sick & tired of our Football Program , and some of our other athletic programs be made the laughing stock of the SEC & The NCAA. John Currie...it’s time to put up or shut up...grow a pair & do what needs to be done...NOW !!!!

Lot of irony here if true.

Bill Arnsparger was the AD at Florida when Spurrier was hired.

Arnsparger wanted don Nehlen of West Virginia. Boosters sent Luca Brasi over to Arnsparger’s Home and Spurrier was hired

Spurrier actually said they interviewed several including himself and Mike Shanihan. Then kept Mike Archer

Kiffin was actually an excellent hire at the time. As someone pointed out earlier, it was unfortunate that his dream job came open and he took it. I think Kiffin would still be a good hire even today with the additional experience he has working under Saban. In addition to more experience, he has more maturity to make better decisions. I have a feeling Kiffin would come back in a heartbeat if offered. He has stated that he made a mistake leaving Tennessee and his father tried to talk him out of going to Southern Cal. Some teams like Louisville can forgive and forget the past and rehire a coach like Petrino.

I loved the Kiffin hire, and he did more with less that one year than either of these mediocrities have done since. He damn near beat Bama, and did beat SC, Kentucky and Vandy.

Coming here that year with Monte in tow, it was a home run hire at the time that just didn't work out due to bad luck with the USC job coming open. It wouldn't ever happen, but I'd be open to him coming back here, and agree that he's jump at the chance, and with a giant chip (not Kelly!) on his shoulder.

Football coaches aren't "yes men," so that's a completely absurd comment, and that is especially true of Kiffin. Kiffin could have had great success at UT; we were simply unlucky that the USC job came open. Yes, Kiffin was also a d--k to ditch a big program like ours after only one year, but he is a good coach. He's certainly a good offensive coach--and let's recall that he brought his dad with him, who was considered a blue-chip NFL defensive coach. What AD wouldn't have been thrilled with idea of getting Monte Kiffin as your DC and his son, who had been head coach of the Raiders? Are you kidding? It was a major coup at the time--and so, yea, Hamilton wasn't going to pass that up and I don't blame him. I was super-excited to get Kiffin, his father and the staff they assembled. It blew up on us, because of an unforeseen circumstance plus some LK dickishness, but that happens in life.

Many people have had interviews which become sort of a formality because the firm has already decided on someone else. That is not peculiar to Tennessee--and he said the same thing of Nebraska. It happens a lot.

Everything looks better in hindsight. And let's not pretend we know that Patterson would have succeeded. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. Coaching hires are a crapshoot--but the more high-level experience, the better, assuming the prospect is not past his prime, and that is something to think about.

the buyout clause in the contract made it too easy for the program to get sunk.
