Pats Stealing Signals?

The only thing that matters in the NFL is your record. If the opposition is careless enough to have their signals stolen, that's their problem. Belichick moves up several notches in my eyes with these actions.
I know a lot of people around the country greatly dislike The Hoody. Can't say I am the biggest fan of him as a person, either, but the man is an outstanding coach.

However, I'm sure even you can agree that if he gets caught cheating, he should get hurt where you said it matters most: The record. You get caught cheating in the middle of a game, you get that win taken away.

Yeah, getting beaten 38-14 is a hell of a way to retaliate. I bet Belichick is about as concerned about this as he is about the new Britney Spears album.

The idea that New England should forfeit their victory Sunday is the single most asinine assertion I've heard in a long, long time.

Your record is complied within the context of a carefully prescribed set of actions that are defined by the rules. The rules are what make that record meaningful in the first place; they define the parameters for competition. Those parameters are what make football different from pro wrestling or a piano recital. That's why Billy Martin said that if you didn't follow the rules as written, then the only thing the rulebook was good for was when you go hunting and run out of toilet paper.

The Patriots broke those rules of competition, apparently just weeks after Goodell had warned every team in the league about this sort of thing. He should (and probably will) throw the book at them.

What, you're okay with this draft pick garbage?

Sets a precedent that the best franchise out there can openly cheat and lose to what amounts to a couple of arena league players.

Goodell has had the solutions to Chris Henry, PacMan Jones and Mike Vick gift-wrapped, and I'm still baffled as to how people basically forgot Shawn Merriman was taking steroids in a month. He's got a chance to come out and actually make a tough decision.

I agree that if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin', and that Belichick is probably one of the best coaches in NFL history. But if anybody gets caught, they have to pay enough of a price that they and everybody else out there knows what's coming if they get caught.

Are you actually quoting Billy Martin, one of the biggest sign stealers and practitioners of gamesmanship in the history of American sport as an expert on ethics?

Pro wrestling is scripted entertainment. What Belichick did Sunday was outmaneuver an intellectually inferior opponent. Mangini knew the tactics. If he fell victim to them, that makes him an abject fool.

Hahahaha.....well, yeah. But just because I like the quote.

I have no problem with stealing signs, by the way. That's why teams use signs to begin with. If the Patriots want to have one of their guys stand on the sidelines and stare across the way to figure out what the Jets are doing, go ahead. What I have a problem with is using a specifically prohibited, external-to-the-game technology like a video camera for that purpose. That's like planting microphones in the other team's locker room.

You act like coaches are posting plays on billboards or something. It's easy to see why the NFL doesn't want teams stealing signs this way. Between a video camera and the still photos taken of every play that are available on the sideline and in the booth, a team could have the opposing team's defensive signals after about the 2nd or 3rd series.

Nobody is stopping the Pats from stealing signs, they are just saying they don't want it to be quite so easy.

Surprised nobody brought up UT stealing signs last year.

I hate the Pats but I would imagine NFL teams switch their signals many many times during a season, but video taping is a bit much IMO.

Then I bet you'll like it when they lose some draft picks next April. If Belichick is so intelligent, why the hell did he have the same guy taping the signals? At the very least, he could have modified this technique by finding someone else roam the sidelines with a camcorder.

Eric Magini knew how Belichick and the Pats operate. If he had a sign stolen Sunday, that's on him and his staff.

Yeah . . . Belichick is so brilliant that he had the same guy video taping the signals from week to week so that the NFL would know exactly who to go to for the evidence after specifically telling everybody not to video tape the signals.

Like in baseball they are always trying to see what the catcher is telling the pitcher correct? If so whats the difference?

Yeah, when the Pats finish 12-4 or better, I bet they'll just feel crushed by losing meaningless draft picks. Garbage franchises like the Falcons and the Titans worry about draft picks. Champions like the Pats just retool with proven veterans through free agency.

Easy now!

I know he's from Knoxville but I don't know why Belichick bothered to do espionage on a team with Pennington as the QB. Is Mangini in Belichik's head that much? Maybe even more now. Sounds like advantage Mangini to me.

...because the NFL previously has told all the teams not to steal signs in this manner.

Don't worry, Hat will be miserable when the Titans are in the playoffs soon. His 0-3 prediction was demolished in the first week of the season.
