I want to start out by saying I think Pat is a great coach and has done wonders for UT/women's basketball. However, her program has slipped mightly since 1998 and I'm not sure she will ever win another NC. In the last 9 games played at TB against top 10 teams Pat's record is a dismal 2-7 and 3 of those loses were blow-outs. There was a time when the LadyVols never lost at home; now teams like Duke/North Carolina waltz into TB and act like they own the place by their dominating performances. This team might get to the final 4 but chances are excellent that they will be sent packing in the semi-finals by either Duke/NC/Maryland. Maybe certain teams have caught and passed UT and just maybe Pat's time has come and gone.

I don't think the program has slipped much at all, in terms of talent and ability. However, the thing about women's bball is that the talent level all around has risen. There's a lot more great athletes and they are spreading around, rather than going to just 3-4 different schools. It's getting to the point where there will be a different NC every year, like in men's.

Lot's of parity now.

Don't think CPS has slipped any. Women's talent has just gotten better. Look at UCONN, they have fallen a little. One thing CPS needs to do is get more speed and she recognized that after last year. Teams like Duke, UNC, and Maryland are little faster and athletic. Don't worry CPS will win another NC

Pat Summit made women's basketball popular in the 90's with the UConn battles. If what your saying is true, that she has slipped (which I don't think is true at all) it's more of a victim of her own sucess. Kind of on the same lines of the "parity in college football" argument.

Back in the day it was UT-UConn, LA Tech. Now its Tenn, Duke, UNC, Purdue, Maryland, etc., etc.

The ACC is tops in women's hoops right now. It used to be UT and UCONN and everybody else was catchin' up. Doesn't mean Pat is on the downswing, just means the women's game has gotten a little stronger of late. Pat will win another title before she's done and yes it will be at UT.

All that teams catching Pat means is more teams are actually taking women's basketball seriously.

Uhh oh... duck.

I can't read the rest of the responses, but that opening sentence is going to get the fur flying in here.

Wear your flak jacket...

I couldn't disagree more, I don't think it's Pat that's slipped so much, but that the talent at other schools across the country has gotten that much better. What Pat has done for women's basketball is amazing, she is one of the major reasons it began getting as much attention as it did over the past two decades. Lots of players and coaches were inspired to get into the game by watching what she's done.
I wouldn't write her off yet, she's a hell of a recruiter and motivator. It may take some time, but I think the ladies will eventually make it back to the top. But you can't ever count them out with Summitt at the helm.

To a degree we are slipping. We have the talent coming in next year. Pat Head Summit is Women's College Basketball and she can stay at UT as long as she wants. We lost something when we lost Vicki DeMoss. I think she challenged Pat to think more outside the box. I truly believe she was the glue in our system. She was the balance that Pat needed. Pat is definitely struggling with coaching our team into role clarity on the court. Offensively they all seem confused. She needs a support staff that will provide more balance.

Seriously, when was the last time the talent wasn't coming in next year for the Lady Vols?

its always coming in but this is really a good strong class #1, 2 & 5 recruits. So we have the talent I will give you that. So are you saying "it must be the coaching"? It is based on position and need. We seriously have one strong player this year a difference maker with a lot of surrounding talent? Remember the three Meeks with Kelly Jolly. What a combination. This team can win it this year but it will require Our coach to do a superior job of coaching. She puts a team on the floor that can win it every year. It is a matter of them them learning to work together as a team. Something is not meshing together for this team right now. Vicki DeMoss must have been a key assistant in making that happen! Agree or Disagree.

Eh, I dunno. I just wanted to verify that talent shouldn't be the problem for a program like the Lady Vols.

I can't believe this thread was created... this is a total joke. Could you even imagine how STUPID UT would look if we fired Summit right after we name a court after her? Hello? most wins of any D-1 college basketball coach?
