NC State's run was pretty impressive as well, I was just working from memory on seeds 5 or lower to win the thing.
I was just thinking that. I gave them little or no chance of beating Olajuwon and Drexler and the Phi Slamma Jamma' routine at the time. Although I can't recall what NC State was seeded at the time..
Arizona was the most recent 6 to get it done.
Dominique Wilkins was not on the '83 Georgia team.It wasn't just the championship game. NC St was 17-10 in the regular season and NIT bound until they inexplicably won the ACC tourney over Michael Jordan's UNC and Ralph Sampson's UVA just to get in. They had to win in OT against Pepperdine, upset UNLV, then beat UVA and Dominique Wilkins' Georgia team before they got to Akeem and Clyde.
Arizona was a 4 in '97.

I wonder how many have been won by 1 seeds?
Didn't you just correct me on this? You are correct. He left in '82.
Back to the original question, no 5 seed has ever won the tournament. Florida in 2000, and Indiana in 2002 lost in the final game as 5 seeds. By my count, 14 #1 seeds have won the championship since the tourney was expanded in '79. Villinova as an 8 in '85 and NC St and Arizona as 6s in '83 and '97 are the only seeds lower than 4 to win the tournament.
