Thinking of the the lack of depth problem right now and how Butch will probably use that for this year, what are some of the excuses that you guys remember over the years or decades? What are some of the potential excuses coming?

Butch and "that's what the book said to do".

Fulmer and "we've had X amount of starters missing X amount of quarters."

The last Dooley show. The ENTIRE show!

For Butch's and VN's sanity, I'm thinking/hoping the coaching changes are going to make a difference this year. Not too worried about the depth comments...it's spring practice, so much needs to be sorted out. Just need young guys to step up.

For first time, we have an actual QB coach specifically developing skills of 3 guys who apparently have mid-upper SEC QB abilities

Shoop got his guys in, and blue sky fresh start...as long as injuries are minimal, think this unit will be back to at least top 30 range.

OL is deepest and most experienced of any unit. NEW OL and Strength coaches should put us into position to protect a young QB and be able to run the ball.

IF all the coaching staff meshes and is upgrade we assume...I think will probably be in the range of past couple years on W's...which most think would be a good year w/ losses in personnel. However, IF QD or JG turn out to be top shelf, we could go on a 2-3 year run, also helping recruiting. Need a rain-maker at QB, similar to Watson @ QB for Clemson, who helped exposure and bring in top shelf recruits. 2017 is BIG year for Butch...one way or the other. Go Vols!

I have an idea for a thread! Let's guess the excuses for a failure which hasn't happened yet... what better way to be a fan?

Almost as ridiculous as predicting 10 or more wins from a team in the SEC with a new QB, new position coaches, a D that was just awful last year, their best D lineman recovering from knee surgery, and no depth across the roster.

Excuses are for losers. It's Year 5. Either you bask in the glow of winning bigly or get ready to move on.

Now to play along with your theme, the excuse would be there were not enough 5* hearts on the team.

I would call failing to get to Atlanta because you lost to South Carolina and Vandy a pretty big f$cking failure

I was referring to the OP, where he asks, "What are some of the potential excuses coming?"... in other words, he is assuming failure for the upcoming season and wondering aloud what our coaches' excuses will be. That's just silly.

... as for last season, perhaps it was a failure (although within that failure we did end the Florida streak and beat Georgia) but it is unfair and even inaccurate to portray Butch Jones as an excuse maker. If I'm wrong please correct me but I don't remember him using injuries on defense as an excuse for how they played from the Alabama game on but I wouldn't have blamed him if he did. That would have been valid... to my recollection, he never did.

He didn't make excuses but he did a lot of deflecting, see champions of life comment.

Fulmer - Kept coaches he shouldn't have, The clawfense bit him, Should've stayed with what worked for so many years with a few adjustments to keep up with the changes in the game.

Kiffin - I believe would've had some pretty good success at Tennessee and if he'd tell you the truth, it was the worst decision of his life to leave. As far as NCAA violations...just a bunch of secondary stuff like Alabama gets...wouldn't have hurt us much. Players really like the guy for whatever reason. Kinda of a Dabo type guy but a smart A$$.

Dooley - I actually liked Dooley but I believe the LSU and NC loss just brought about a lot of bad omen to the program and I think hurt recruiting. He was struggling with attrition and they just never really recovered.

Butch - We'll see this year and that's all I'm saying. Tired of the excuses. I'm not getting excited or making predictions. I realize he took over a complete mess but he must produce this year.

So you're admitting we have a problem with lack of depth but will crusify Butch when he mentions it?

We also have depth at LB , need more on the DL, secondary, and RB. Excited about team121 with all of it's young talent along with what looks like a solid staff to coach it.

Anytime you have a new coach you always hear they don't have the right players to fit their system that buys them several years

We have averaged 8.22 wins per season since 1968, so you're right about the 8 win program thing... but of course, there are two dreadful 7 season stints that really drags down our average ('74-'80 and '08-'14). 9 wins should not be the ceiling at Tennessee and 8 wins should not be the norm. Butch has some work to do.
