Being at the 30 and/or being a freshman aren't the problems. There was a recruiting video of him last year and he was kicking it deep into the endzone from the 30 consistently. He was, however, at a lower altitude and using his own ball. Tennessee uses the worst ball for kicking there is. I think that is part of the problem. Someone said we use it because it works better for the qb, which is more important. Wilson needs to step up their game and make a ball that is good for kicking and for the qb's. Beyond, that, I do believe the biggest issue is hang time and placement. They want it high and to the sideline. Give him an offseason and I think he will turn out to be a star.
I do have one question about this, though. Do you think they (the coaches) would rather have kicks land at the goal line near the pylon with a good hangtime or have the ball go out the back of the endzone if they could have either? This is considering an avg. kick returner, not someone who returns 1 out of 5 for td's.
