Special teams is key to Dooley, he has mentioned this time and time again. I had thought many times about mentioning the idea that they are trying to keep from out kicking the special teams.

You know our special teams suck, right?

Net Punting: 61st
Punt Returns: 110th
KO Returns: 92nd

I seen him last night after the game, he was limping some, so I think he is hurt more than we all think...

We shouldn't even be ranked in punt returns. There should just be an asterisk and a "DNQ" notation. I'd go empty from here out.

In previous years it seemed like the other team returning for a score or into our territory was a pretty regular occurrence. They have done a good job this year.

The kick-off team has been the least of our problems. (knock on wood)

Kickoff coverage isnt spectacular but last year it was a TD waiting to happen. Palardy will be just fine.

Being at the 30 and/or being a freshman aren't the problems. There was a recruiting video of him last year and he was kicking it deep into the endzone from the 30 consistently. He was, however, at a lower altitude and using his own ball. Tennessee uses the worst ball for kicking there is. I think that is part of the problem. Someone said we use it because it works better for the qb, which is more important. Wilson needs to step up their game and make a ball that is good for kicking and for the qb's. Beyond, that, I do believe the biggest issue is hang time and placement. They want it high and to the sideline. Give him an offseason and I think he will turn out to be a star.

I do have one question about this, though. Do you think they (the coaches) would rather have kicks land at the goal line near the pylon with a good hangtime or have the ball go out the back of the endzone if they could have either? This is considering an avg. kick returner, not someone who returns 1 out of 5 for td's.

I have never heard more excuses for a poor, over-rated kicker (player) in my life. Watch Dooley's pressors and listen to the DD Show...even HE has been mentioning the poor kickoffs the last several weeks.

One kick Saturday night at Vandy was caught at the 20...ran to mid-field...but was called back due to a block in the back...The kid has been nothing but a disappointment...period.

Now...let's hear more about the ball...and the tides at sea level....:birgits_giggle:

Palardy's short kicks are not by design.
Dooley has said repeatedly that the short kicks are hurting us and the problem will be addressed.
Palardy will be our punter next year.

I remember one kickoff in the game and said finally he got one deep. Looked up and saw Cunningham running off the field. Cunningham didn't have the hang time that Palardy had and they seemed to get a much better return but still only out to the 30. Still not better or much worse starting position then most of Palardy's high short kickoffs.

It's the ball tenn uses.

I'm pretty sure somebody nailed the real issue in the previous thread. He's using a Nike shoe on an Adidas ball on an Adidas tee.

To get better results, UT would need a new contract or Palardy would have to change shoes.

Basically, it's Hamilton's fault. :hi:

Yesterday on a call in show, Fuad reveiz called the nike ball conspiracy a huge joke, basically called out Wilhoit for ever thinking this stuff up.

Man there's no pleasing some people. I definitely see an upgrade in all facets of special teams this year compared to the last few years. And in a down/rebuilding year that we're having, seeing improvement anywhere makes me happy, even more so it being special teams.

Kickoff's have been the least of our problems:

"I think his kickoffs will improve as he gets older," Dooley said. "It's 10 yards back from what he does in high school. It takes a lot of physical strength, it takes a lot of timing and hitting that sweet spot consistently."...

"It's not just banging it deep, we're trying to place it," Dooley said. "It's a little bit like you got your driver out and you got a real tight fairway. We need it long and we need it on the mark."...

Palardy wasn't expecting this much work so soon....

"He's a talented young kicker," Dooley said. "He'll learn and grow."

Dooley says Palardy took 'step back' vs. Memphis GoVolsXtra

Let it go!...He is a freshman kicking a different ball from further back and will get better...In cased you missed it are winning right now...The world is not going to end because he is not kicking it in the endzone. :loco:

There may be some validity to the Nike vs Adidas ball but there is not much...maybe 5 yards. St. Thomas Aquinas used composite balls that do travel further. Most high schools do not use composite balls. Palardy was a using a one inch tee in high school so Tee size is not a valid excuse. What is known is the he was a line drive kicker in high school and did not get very much hangtime from his kicks. I imagine he will be fine once he gets some more time adjusting to getting more height on the ball. Most ST coaches want at least a 4.0 second hang time. and to inside the hashes. It is tougher than it seems.

i know this has nothing to do with the post, but does anyone know what it means when the players do the "loco" thing after a big play? :loco: I wasn't sure what i missed...

I read volnation every day and this is the first time i have posted...so go easy on me. haha.

Yes, I do. We are a pretty strong 7th in KO Return Defense. We are a more craptastic 64th in PR Defense. We are pretty good 14/16 on FGs, but we have missed 2 extra points.

I definitely see an upgrade in all facets of special teams this year compared to the last few years.

If you see an upgrade in all facets, you aren't looking at all facets. We are getting less than 4 yards per punt return. We are in the bottom 3rd in the nation in KO returns. And we have fumbled or muffed 7 punts.

Now, if you only count the facets in which we have improved, then we have improved in all facets, I guess.
