Palardy....Dissapointing??

On at least one occasion he kicked it straight without much hang time and it still didn't reach the 5. I hope he can develop. He will be needed unless someone else emerges.

Hard to say. His leg strength was supposed to be out of this world in high school. He kicked all but a handful off for touchbacks and I believe he made a couple of 60+ yard field goals. I know he kicked a very long one this year that had a heck of a lot more distance than was needed.

Daniel Lincoln had a very successful freshman season and then was horrible for two years. With that in mind, I wouldn't try to measure the guy's entire future off this year.

True that HS kickers kick from the 40...but his HS kicks were OUT OF THE END ZONE. Backing up 10 yards should put his kicks at the goal line...NOT THE 10 YARD LINE!

Darr is already here, is he not?

Yes, #3 Matt Darr (Rated as nation's No. 1 punting prospect by punting expert Chris Sailer.) is here he's just not playing because Cunningham has been doing fine. I think he's redshirting this year.

You may be right.. but if Darr is here now, why is he not kicking off for us, with all the problems we are having, is he red shirting???

The last report I saw had Lincoln and Cunningham starting with Palardy the #2 for both positions. Palardy had a shot punting earlier and Dooley said he looked really good, but that was when he pulled his groin, I believe.

Agree. But if he performs like this next year and we are in some close games because we are better, who do we go too? Thats the question. If we get no kicker this year and he goes down or continues to underperform, that will be a real problem.

Hope he gets better and is great but he has to show alot more than whats happening now...

I just thought at the very least he would be able to get close to or in the end zone on a consistent basis. Thus far all I've seen from him are out of bounds kicks and ridiculously short kicks, giving our opponent consistenly great field position to start their drives!

So overall yes, even though he's just a freshmen I have been sorely disappointed with Palardy.

If Palardy can't do it Matt Darr will get a shot. However, Palardy isn't so bad currently that we need to panic and scour the campus for a walk-on like we did in 2009.

Some of the ridiculously short kicks were intentionally kicked that way.

Kicking out of bounds should never happen. I would like to see kicks deeper but I think he is working on his hang time. Can’t argue with results. Kickoff coverage seems to have improved.

Coverage units are on top of the returners by the time they reach the 20. They didn't get faster, kicks got better.

I agree and in know way am I saying he is poor. But after all the hype he has been dissapointing IMO...

After several years of poor kicking I just don't want to see us slip into that situation again. It's been hard to watch....

As I said earlier, the coverage teams are very much improved and I think that is a blessing with our current kicking game....

There were videos on YouTube of him kicking it into the endzone consistently from the 30last fall. Of course that was in South Florida with his ball. I know there was an article a couple of months ago from one of our former kickers that said Tennessee uses the worst ball for kicking that they make. Wilson GST, IIRC. The article talked about the huge difference in distance with a different ball. Are we under contract on this or what? Seems like, considering one of our Maxims concerns the kicking game, we would want to use the best ball for that purpose. Of course, he could have used helium in the one he was using in the video, too.

I wondered about that. But still, I don't understand the thinking. Why GIVE our opponent an automatic start between the 30-40 yard line??

Usually that isn't happening. They are catching it near the 20 and getting 5 yards or less on the return.

The last staff went to that last year, and those were our best results.

Gran was a good special teams coach that never gave up a TD return until last year when he gave up several. We've got pretty much the same guys covering kicks this year, minus Eric Berry. I'm thinking the kickers are helping out there.

Yeah but Ole Miss consistently started their drives between the 30 and 40 yard line yesterday. I don't recall one where they started at their 20 or inside the 20.

Quite possible.. You have to admit however that these coverage teams pass the EYE test better than the last few years.

And that our kickoffs have cosistantly been between the 10-15 yard lines..

Couple things about your post. Yes, we are using a Wilson ball that is not great for kickers. There was indeed an article about it a few months back. However, I believe we are using it because it is better for the QBs, who obviously have more of an impact on the game than the kicker. Also, on the helium thing, that doesn't make any difference. Mythbusters actually did an episode on that and there wasn't an appreciable difference between helium balls and regular air balls. Good thought though.

BTW, not sure about a contract with Wilson on the balls, but I do wish they could find something that was a compromise. I seem to remember someone saying something about a new Nike ball that was good for both qbs and kickers.

I honestly don't remember, but I know the coverage units have been solid since the Oregon game.

I'd say there really isn't that much of a talent difference between kickers at the Div. 1 level. Every kicker has demonstrated enough skill in the past to make it that far. I think the main differences are mental, with other factors such as trust/reliance on your holder, etc. coming into play.

I think expectations were so high for Palardy, that it added alot of pressure for a 18 year old kid kicking in front of 90K+ every week.

We just have to hope that he gets used to the crowds and gets the mental part down sometime in the next few months. If he does that, the skies the limit. If he struggles and is hard on himself, well then he will self-destruct in legendary fashion.
