Good luck Mr. Owens! We appreciate your hard work!

Hope we don't play your future school any time soon :)

He was forced to play them because Dominic Woodson didn't pan out and Jabari Mcghee got injured. I believe you can redshirt still if you play under 8 games (or maybe thats just a medical redshirt). Donnie was forced to play them (like you said) but ideally wanted to redshirt both. I say its on the coach because he knew what he was getting from both players, and he should have recruited better in order to redshirt Owens and WCM.

I understand where you are coming from, but you aren't being pragmatic about the situation. Recruit who? He assembled a team in six weeks. Zo recruited one solid post player his entire time here, that's where the problem lies. On top of that, Willie was never redshirting. Tyndall said he wanted to get Willie 10-15 mins a game ideally, but with our depth he was going to be forced to play 25 mins+. Willie's problems came in the form of making the same stupid mistakes every game. I'm pretty sure Tyndall was smart enough to teach ball-you-man, it just seems Willie never understood the concept. Willie's problems are more mental than they are physical. His basketball IQ is that of an NBA2k advocate. He just doesn't understand basic basketball concepts that I know he's been taught, probably since the first day he started playing.

I agree with all of that.

Haha, what improvement? He stopped fouling as much? The game never really seemed to slow down for him, especially on the offensive end.

Better floor spacing and awareness where the ball is. He grabbed some key rebounds in the win over Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament. His fouling hasn't gotten better but he looked improved towards the end of the year.

I'm never going to get mad at a kid who doesn't think this is their best option.

I've always wondered if the people who bash these kids for leaving, have ever left their job when they had a new boss/manager take over their company. Sometimes in life things just don't work out the way you originally plan on. Best of luck to Owens.

You have to think that if Barnes wanted him he wouldn't be leaving. No way do I hold this against the kid..or the coach. Tis what it is.

I wish him the best, but there were 2 good pieces of news I gathered from this.

1. Coach Barnes is honest and upfront
2. He is going to bring in some ballers.

Damn, Tennessee basketball is on its way back up.

No way he could redshirt both. But remember that he had Eric McKnight, who was denied by the SEC. Just got screwed on that deal because I think they changed the rule right after that. Pearl then got someone cleared with a similar history. McKnight didn't put up huge numbers, but he would have been a veteran presence in the paint.

Good luck to Tariq. It's a win-win for both. Tariq needed that year off to get bigger and stronger. UT needs another spot for a talented player that can contribute sooner.

I hate losing him. Despite what all happened this year, I was proud of every last player this year, as well as the old staff.

However, it is time to turn the page, and to see what Barnes can do. I can only hope this is the only one.

If Mostella isn't being recruited over, then we're in trouble!

Did you even watch a game this season? He's got great potential, just needs some better coaching and time.

He actually had a better freshman season that McRae did for us, and we all know how well he turned out.

OMG... I am really sadden by this move. I thought for sure he was a keeper. I guess that meeting was really a let down for him.

I haven't talked to Jabari today so I'm not sure what Barnes said to him in their meeting. I'm thinking... "silence is golden". I guess everything went okay for him or surely he would have called.

Good luck to you Tariq. I'm really going to miss you. I know Jabari is not happy about this because of the bond you guys formed. You were his ride and die!

Go forth and do great things wherever you go. The McGhee family will still be cheering you on! Bon Voyage! :cray:

Who were the players that Donnie should have recruited in order to redshirt Owens and Carmichael? Where did those players end up signing? And how do you know if those players were recruited by DT, that they did not turn a UT offer down?

It seems as though many on this board think that all players who fans want, are wanted by the coaching staff. Not all players that indicate an interest in being a Vol are considered to have the skills to fit the coaching philosophy. And, all players that are recruited, don't want, necessarily, to be a Vol!

Case in point; Austin Nichols was heavily recruited and the fans, in many quarters, felt that he was gonna sign with UT. As we all should know...he is now a Memphis Tiger.

I really wanted to see him put on 25 pounds this offseason to see what he could do. Alas.

@patrickbrownTFP: Barnes met with players individually yesterday. Indicated he'd grant releases if guys want to leave. Wants players to have 'both feet in.'
