Owens asks for release.

Nah he didn't suck, he has a lot of potential and I wish we wasn't losing him. Going off articles about his transfer, we can't deny it appears he's scared of the competition that's soon to be coming. He's evidently also afraid to speak for himself apparently, thus far it's been his daddy doing all the talking, so yeah, no backbone. It clearly says his transfer is due to believing he will be recruited over. Who wants a player that's scared of competition anyways?

Actually he met with the coach and asked questions according to the article so he has a spine. If he sees the writing on the wall if this is true then why should he stay and get recruited over when he can go somewhere else and succeed. Wahpun went to the tourney and Chievous made it. Tn is not the end all be all. Let him go. Doesn't make an 18/19 year old a year removed from high school soft because his dad advocates for him. Plenty of kids who don't have that support let alone a dad to back him up. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm not sure Owens will ever put on enough weight to produce at this level. Some people have a hard time putting on weight.

That may be an issue also. He had a hard time banging with the big boys in the SEC. Either way it's his future on the line.

1st place UT was on a thread when Owens committed, its really ok that is he wants to leave he should have that right. Im sure he was told some that Tyndall would be here and now he isn't, closer to home which could be the best thing for him. Young men maybe of with going away until it happens, then the support from a distance just doesn't feel right. Good luck TO.

@Ben_Fred: Rick Barnes has some interviews with local writers tomorrow. I'm sure he'll be asked about transfers (and plenty of other topics) then.

Just a heads up. May see more information about transfers and assistants.

If you are a 6'10" freshman and you are scared of being recruited over on a team where the next tallest player is 6'8", you have no business playing big time college basketball. If he can't play here, he can't play at St. Johns, or anywhere else that is worth mentioning.

Good luck Tariq

Agree with everything you said except the end all be all part. Seriously though, sometimes going through tough situations makes you stronger and builds character. Not saying he is running from the situation, but if he doesn't stick things like this out how will he do in a big situation in the future. I really hate to lose him. Best of luck Tariq.

CRB needs players for now. Owens is best served with a red shirt year. We could not afford a red shirt year.

The Tennessean article said he wanted to transfer to a school closer to his sick grandmother.

i my humble opinion any player that leaves a program for fear of being recruited over isn't worth keeping in the program anyway.

if that rumor is true, then good luck and don't let the door hit you in you skinny behind.

Ignorance is sad.

I don't know how much that factored in. As stated, the article posted said Tariq asked if he'd get recruited over and Barnes didn't give him an exact answer.

I don't think he ever actually "seen" a Vols game this year if he likes WCM better. If anybody is to leave the team, I believe 99.9% of fans on here would say they hope it's Carmichael. He's just not a legit SEC player He may turn into a decent back up/role player in the future, but that's his ceiling here.
If you didn't see the progression towards the end of the year.. I don't know what to tell you. WCM and Owens both should have been redshirted, neither were ready this year. Thats on the coach, not them.

What is Barnes suppose to tell these players? "Hey, I am planning to recruit players who are inferior to you!!"

*Opens Thread* "A kid who transfers for playing time is worthless."

*Opens Next Thread* "What transfers will CRB be able to bring in?"

VN never fails.

It sounds like it's still uncertain. What probably happened is the player and family may be a little frustrated, and they made a huge mistake...they talked to the media.

The media in turn broke a story to make that MON-AY!

In short: the media is the devil. :devilsmoke:

Haha, what improvement? He stopped fouling as much? The game never really seemed to slow down for him, especially on the offensive end.

i agree that they weren't ready but how do you redshirt them with the roster from this past season? That team was very thin in talent, size, IQ, etc. from the jump. Tyndall didn't have a choice if he wanted to win 10 games.

He was forced to play them because Dominic Woodson didn't pan out and Jabari Mcghee got injured. I believe you can redshirt still if you play under 8 games (or maybe thats just a medical redshirt). Donnie was forced to play them (like you said) but ideally wanted to redshirt both. I say its on the coach because he knew what he was getting from both players, and he should have recruited better in order to redshirt Owens and WCM.

His transfer will allow him to sit out a yr and gain much needed weight to play on the D1 level.

Sorry all, I genuinely can't keep track: was Tariq the Maryland player whose mom died while he was in high school, and his dad would have liked for him to stick around closer to home but supported him in whatever decision he made, and he came here? I do remember a lot of good-natured posts about needing to put some weight on him.

If so, VN was all over this guy when he committed.

We might occasionally want to remember our mindsets when these players first came in. (Those of us who are out of the Clearasil stage, anyway.)
