Our Top Rival's Top Rivals.

As a long-time viewer of Tide football (started in the late 1940's), I agree with someone above that Ala/Tenn was a true rivalry, and without the "hatred" so manifest in athletics today. You desired to win, but if you didn't, you realized you had been defeated by an honorable, respected opponent. Coach Bryant measured teams by Tennessee, and it was my recollection that Coach Neyland said of a player, "Wait and see how he does against Alabama." Personally, when Auburn plays Tenn, I root for Tenn, but can't speak for all Tide fans. Thanks for letting me put two cents worth in?

Coach Bryant spoke similarly to what Coach Neyland said -- I don't have the quote but it was something to the effect that "you find out what you are made of when Alabama and Tennessee play."

Lol. why does everyone put gatech below us on ugas list? GT is Ugas biggest rival and vice versa. Our 3 big rivals all have more heated in-state rivalries. the best "territorial" rivalries we have are kentucky and vandy, lol. Our heated rivals are all conference opponents with lots of history and competitiveness.

There seems to be a difference between traditional rivals and recent/heated rivals. There can be overlaps in the two categories. I remeber as a kid watching the Auburn games. They used to be our second most hated team behind Bama. Things changed when they broke the SEC into East and West.

The best team in the conference is the automatic rival for everyone. I'd say that Arkansas, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Auburn all consider LSU a rival or a varying rival. The same that Tennessee, UGA, and USC all consider Florida rivals.

Arkansas and Ole Miss used to be HUUUUGE rivals and then things died down when they got average.

Florida's two main rivals are definitely FSU and UGA, simply based on long history. Our "third" varies. In some periods it was Miami, and that may begin again before too long. UT was for awhile, too, and I agree that Kiffin is giving that some new energy. From time to time its also been LSU or Auburn.

When Florida takes the tampon out and plays Miami every year it will be a rivalry.

Until then, UF tucks its tail and runs from them.

They stomped Miami this year. What's the deal with them not playing every year anyway?

Foley is scared.

They have ducked and will continue to duck Miami. They are scared. Miami wants to play them every year. Foley says no.

Well UF is not as stupid as I thought they were. Its a smart short term decision to play mia every year, but adding another bove .500 team and threat to recruiting to the schedule could end up biting them in the arse. It would be great football for outside fans, but I could see where UF would try to avoid that. MIA has waaaayyyy more to gain from a well publicized rivalry like that. FSU, UF, and MIA round robin reg season tournies would be AWESOME but I can see the anti-appeal for whoever is the top dog.

This is correct.

Add to that the fact that Miami's renewed interest in the series began when FSU became a conference game. Before then, both teams had little interest.

The Border War between MU and KU is the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi. One of the most bitter and hated rivalrys of all time.
Juck Fayhawks doesnt have the same ring to it as Buck Fama though.

I've heard that nothing compares to that one. Dates back to the civil war. South (Mizzou) North (Kansas) and all the atrocities that were committed during that time are remembered during this rivalry game. I don't know if it's true its just what I heard on the radio.

UT is a school with many rivals, but not a most hated one. We're a jack of all trades, but a master of none. Well, I guess you could say we are the master of UK.

Here's what it boils down to-
UT-UF is the most important game in the SEC East.

UT-Bama is the most important game in the SEC.

Neither of those teams hate us as much as they do their rivals, but we're the ones they focus on.

Georgia and Georgia Tech REALLY hate each other.

See GTs fight song:
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an engineer--
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer.
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.

Oh! If I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do--
He would yell, 'To hell with Georgia!' like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it round.
I'd drink to all the good fellows who come from far and near.
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', hell of an engineer!

I think Auburn might even be a bigger rival than us too...oldest rivalry in the south and such. But maybe some younger fans don't understand it?
