First, I would like to congratulate our team and coaches for the obvious improvement they have made recently.
However, I do have a concern and it has to do with our run game. We are not very good, plain and simple. We need a better-balanced offense.
Is our problem the backs themselves, the offensive line, or both?. I am thinking we will have to have a really good run game to move up to the next level.
We desperately need a Cobb-Web duo.
Go Vols, beat Vandy.

I mean, our 2 feature backs averaged 5.3 and 4.6 yards a carry. I think we're having a hard time finding a proper run balance, but I wouldn't necessarily say we aren't very good.

Averaged 3.5 ypc yesterday and 3.7 on the season.

Mizzou stacked the box all night long. Covered man to man and played off the receivers, the were essentially saying that we could not beat them throwing the ball. We still ran the ball well at times.

Kentucky did the same thing. If you're a DC it's the smart thing to do. Our QB play has been suspect and inconsistent all season. Last night's destruction through the air of Mizzou may cause teams to rethink that strategy now.

Go back and look at the QB rushes and sacks stats and you'll find the disparity between how well our better RBs are performing versus the numbers you put up. Mizzou came into yesterday's game as the #9 defensive club in the NCAA, they were and are no slouch on defense and play the run better than most.

This true. And both games we played safe zone on defense most of the time. Played super safe on D, because we could, even though neither qb was going to beat us with their arm.

OP,

If our running backs were as good as our wide receivers, then they would get more touches. JG and our wideouts were destroying Missouri's secondary and they couldn't stop our passing game at all.

We took what they gave us and burned them with our big physical receivers. I believe the run game should improve, but the punting and field position lost because of the kicking game was terrible.

Zou run D is very good. Week before, UF just abandoned the run game after 1st half and came out just throwing in 2nd half. Pretty sure Chaney recognized we were not going to run on them either and knew we could attack their man coverage with our big receivers. We were passing at will. Just smart game planning IMO. But I do agree we have to get where we can run the ball when we want to run it and the D knows we are going to.

When you can average 10.5 yards per attempt and 18 per completion, you might as well take what they give you.
I do wish we could average 4.5 to 5 per rush attempt, however.

Our OL doesn’t get a Huge push most of the time. I believe its because we have so many young lineman. They are great but you want jr and sr starting, who have several more years of training and lifting. We also don’t have an elite back yet.

We have average SEC running backs.

None are excellent, which is why we are still attempting to recruit one.
We need a big, fast RB in the worst way. I hope they look Juco if we can't get one signed in this class. Gray is going to be good but just isn't big enough to be that every down back.

The main reason Pruitt kept going back to JG in every game since Maurer started is because neither Maurer nor Shrout are near where they need to be yet with their pre-snap reads and they are not putting the RBs into the correct formations based on what the D is doing. The reason they did not run a lot last week against UK in the 2nd half and against Mizzou is because of that weird cast on JG's left hand, which limits which side he can hand off to the RBs.
