Our next coach should be an Alumnus and....

I don't care about him being an alumnus, I want a winner...someone who can flat out coach. I'm saying these 4 I like. Tee, I wouldn't be completely disappointed. I'm just not certain he is ready for this level quite yet.

Bobby Petrino
Lane Kiffin
Mike Norvell
Kevin Sumlin

I believe we could get any of these guys.

Considering the other HC job he was being linked to is Georgia Southern....he's definitely not.

Your wrong here. The next hire absolutely must be an Alumnus. Hire as many Alumnus for coordinators and position coaches you can and lets roll.

No more coaches just drawing a paycheck that doesn't understand Tennessee.

If your goal is to win a National Championship it will be only wishful thinking with these 4 coaches. They only deliver 7-8 wins per year. That is a fact. But that's OK if that is your only dream. If you want a Championship coach then you must turn your attention to Jimbo Fisher or Mike Leach. We can use 340 million dollars to upgrade our stadium, but cannot use any of this to get a championship coach. Texas A & M can reach out and buy Jimbo Fisher, but we can't. Why? Arkansas can reach out and buy Mike Leach's services, but we can't. Why? It's like building a house. Your house is only as good as it's foundation. We don't have a foundation and I guess we never will.

That would be my realistic list as well and all would be good hires...Norvell makes me a little nervous only because he hasn't shown what he can do with his own recruits but other than that I like his style.

No Petrino. After the revolt we just had for a coach with a questionable background and morals we can’t hire Petrino and give ESPN and the media additonal fuel to trash us with even more. John Adams on Finebaum today made us look stupid for even talking about him and saying what he did wasn’t all that bad. That’s not the point in all of this. If it’s not a good fit for our program and doesn’t pass the smell test move on

I think Tee with a good Offense coordinator And Defense coordinator could be successful. Also I would make a call to Jim Bob Cooter right now. I think the VFLs are now gonna have the say and no more Rogue hires.

Be real careful about only looking at Alumnus. We tried that at Alabama with DuBose and then again with Shula. As you know that did not work out well for us.

Our problem came after we stopped hiring alumni. The Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer years were spectacular compared to the non-alumni head coach years that followed.

i think we do need to be careful. my initial gut reaction was the same thing. but the reality is we need a strong leader and football coach. it doesn't HAVE to be a TN guy. but we're awful close to being painted in a corner where it might have to be.

so i'd tread with a little caution on saying what it has to be.....there are other guys out there that could do a good job here.

but you do have to also consider that the dynamic has most certainly changed.

you can all but scrap your old lists. Frost isn't coming, even if he wanted to before yesterday. Peterson is more of a pipe dream than he was a week ago, and John Gruden is in Easter Bunny territory............

a name that i was vehemently against a week ago, now makes some sense in my mind....which means there's zero chance of it happening....and that's les miles.

he's a name...everybody likes Les....he can recruit....he can be the face of a program, especially when you need one like we do now.....and he knows the SEC, and he could put together a staff....and he's a really good man.

what a hire like that does for us now, is it buys you 3-5 years. maybe you buy enough time for a guy like Tee Martin to grow and develop as a coach.....? maybe you can get him on your staff as a CIW?

bottom line, we have a short term mess on our hands. but you have talent on the roster now, and what could be a good recruiting class coming in. a guy like Miles at this point puts a captain at the helm, a rudder back in the water, and has a personality that will endear himself to fans and media alike.

so while just a week ago, i was ready to shout down anyone that brought his name up......he could be a great fit now.

fwiw.

I understand. I was only suggesting to not look only at Alumni. We Bama fans almost broke the fax machines and clogged up the phone lines at the University begging for Mike Dubose and we got him only to live to regret it big time.
