Our Future D

Yeah the OP isn't a homer or anything. You realize the rest of the sec isn't just standing still while we are improving right?

Just the 2012 defense alone will be pretty sick.

DE J Smith (Jr)
DT M Couch (Rs Jr)
DT D Hood (Rs Jr)
DE M Walls (Rs Jr)

LB C Maggitt (Soph)
LB AJ Johnson (Soph)
LB H Lathers (Rs Sr - Med. Rs?)

CB P Waggner (Rs Sr)
FS B Randolph (Soph)
SS B Brewer (Jr)
CB I Lanier (Rs Jr)

Very solid IMO. And with the possibility for everybody back (excluding Waggner) in 2013 as well.

With that front 4, I still doubt that we get very much of a pass rush.

You may be right, but with another year to improve and learn the system, I wouldn't be suprised to see big strides made. Not saying they'll be world beaters, but ya never know I suppose. Maybe throw Jordan Williams in there to create more of a pass rush. Idk. Just a thought. I think it will definitely help having 9 out of 11 guys returning though. Hopefully Wilcox can take their experience along with increased depth behind them and finally be able to do what he wants schematically. I just have a feeling he's still playing it conservative. Still waiting on those crazy blitz packages.

Whoa, easy chief. That may be a tad bit bold and premature

Oh it's homerism all in that statement. Lol But people also forget Maggitt will be putting his hand on the ground come third down. I also think J.Williams will be very good coming off the edge. Jac Smith is a guy that would help out if he learns how to use his skill set. Also to the poster talking about safeties, I'm confident in Randolph as a future big time player for us. He showed a whole lot this past week against LSU. Ware got the best of him but he never backed down and he brought him down. McNeil has to prove it but I feel good about him too. It's the cb play I'm worried about the most.

I just do not know how our pass rush is as bad as it is. We are decent at run stop but i think that half of our secondary problems are that our pass rush is horrible. Somebody explain why it is that bad. Is it the scheme, the players, i just can't figure it out.

Simply put, I think that we lack talent and/or experience on the line. In 2012 and 2013 it will be a lot different.

We have had good pressure at times but our CBs just get beat.

I hope so but it seems like we could blitz a little to get some pressure, i have noticed we have some but we may need to amp it up. We have to start getting turnovers or we have no chance vs. Scar, Bama, or Arkansas even though our chances are slim as is.

I am really hoping that they can pull together as a unit and make some progress. We need to close out with at least 3 more wins and get bowl eligible. That is priority one. This team needs to have the extra prep work and practices that comes with getting ready for a bowl game.

It has to be experience but time will tell i guess. I just think that we need to move Miller back to DE he has got talent but is being wasted at DT.

Both have been bad. The thing I am sick of more than anything is not seeing UT play a complete game. Enough is enough with this playing strong and confident to the first half. I hope that Dooley can muster up some mojo to pump this defensive unit up. Side note: It's also unfortunate that the offense isn't helping them and keeps putting them in bad situations.

Can't blitz a lot with our CBs being as slow as they are.

That's why I said the future. By AJ and Maggitt's junior years we'll be a pretty good D hopefully. This thread isn't necessarily saying they'll be world beaters next season.

Agreed. I really hope Jacques figures it out. I thought he would have been more of a terror in the backfield this year. With that being said, he's only a true soph so plenty of time to get it together.

I did like what i saw from Jordan Williams in the limited time he has seen this year.

Has Willie Bohannon done anything this year?

You get more sacks when your secondary can cover well. You can rush straight up or bring LBs when that happens. Our corners and SS do not cover well. We have been close on a bunch, though. I expect JS to get his share starting next year. SEC OT's are strong guys with good footwork. He has to get stronger and improve technique combined with his speed to get them. Don't know about the rest of the d-line because I haven't seen anything impressive other than the push that Malik, Hood and Couch get up the gut.

Well...a nice post with good upside....one could conclude that CDD is recruiting to a high level to address the gaps in personnel. Sounds like UT has their coach to lead the program back.

We should have brent brewer for a couple more years too. I know he hasn't done anything spectacular this year but he's been solid and is still just a sophomore
