Our fan base is pretty embarrassing, really.

jwells, I agree. The booing, insults, and rock painting will only add to the decline.

Did anyone see the Penn St game and 'white out?'

Wouldn't it be neat if the UT student section were to go all orange with a power T in white???? That would look great on TV.

The team could use more school spirit support than it has been getting.

Havn't actually seen the rock myself but saw a picture and thought it strange the 'fire Fulmer' remark would be written in Crimson. (that's how a picture on the net appeared.)

You give us too much credit. The performance on the field far surpasses anything we could do. Kids want to know that they will be on TV, have an opportunity to play for championships, have an opportunity to appear in BCS Bowls, etc. Do that and the recruits will follow.

Everything you cited as being what kids come to play for indirectly involve supportative fans. If supportive fans don't matter, then why does every recruiting thread on volnation mention the capacity of the stadium? So recruits can say they can get boo'd by the largest SEC crowd?" No...

Yes, kids want to play for championships but a supportive fan base is part and parcel.

So people who pay thousands of dollars per year and invest hours of their time each week should just sit and applaud the performance they have been giving us?

I'm not saying that... But we have to recognize the booing only makes things worse when recruits are visiting.

It would look greater on tv if the team played like they actually had a clue about how to score touchdowns.

You have a clue??? Let's hear it, how do we score TDs??

Don't answer, I know what you're going to say, put the ball across the goal line?

Your sarcasm reminds me of a sardine serenely swimming in the sea of Sardinia with the rest of the little fishes in his school leaving a trail of little bubbles everywhere you go.

i had a bama fan tell me we were the worst fanbase due to our fair weatherness and how we booed so chorus-like during the Florida game. thats almost worst than hearing a duke fan talk about how they have a winning record and UT does not.

I'm not saying that... But we have to recognize the booing only makes things worse when recruits are visiting.

No doubt it does wonders for team morale even when there are no recruits visiting, no doubt it makes the players just want to bust a gut to make their ever loving fans happy.

So you disagree? I guess you would rather look at all of the orange shirts than an efficient offense.

Give me $3 mil to coach and I'll bone up on it. Believe me, I think I could luck into more than has been produced to date.

Are you the REAL GSVOL from Hardin County? How's them chikins? :w00t:

Therads such as these would be humerous if they weren't just so misguided. It goes with the "Your not a real Vol fan" unless you are in lock step gorging your self on the Kool-Aid while the ship sinks. The arguments you present are worn and threadbare.

Honestly, if the fans embarrass people more than our team's play, they should probably cease being fans.

I concur.

I'm with you Jwells, no one ever has respect for another person's opinion on this board. Everyone on here I think is truly a UT fan. I say look at the players this way, what if that was your son out there. I don't want one response saying they wouldn't want to kick someone's a--. If you say that you wouldn't it's complete B.S. The kids trying and he's not god enough move on. Coaches are grown men who are paid hefty for what they do, attack them all you want. Bring on the personal attacks at me now, it'll be a joy to read.

OK, you asked for it.......

Poor grammar in this sentence, "The kids trying and he's not god enough move on."

:)

Therads [sic] such as these would be humerous [sic] if they weren't just so misguided. It goes with the "Your [sic] not a real Vol fan" unless you are in lock step gorging your self on the Kool-Aid while the ship sinks. The arguments you present are worn and threadbare.

I think you missed the point, or else got to the title and decided to just fire away.

I fully understand and expect fans to criticize our play. However, I am embarrassed at the personal attacks. We pride ourselves on being better, then you see the kinds of attacks we've leveled on our players. It's not every single person, but it's a vocal large minority, and it defines our fanbase, because no one speaks out about it.

I'm not saying to get in line and ride the sinking ship. I'm saying if we need to make changes, make them. But do it without insulting the guys out there trying their best. Even if they're on the bench (as they should be) they don't deserve the garbage said about them as people.

YES!!

NO, what a stupid analogy.

Give me $3 mil to coach and I'll bone up on it.

Why don't you go ahead and do that now??

Believe me, I think I could luck into more than has been produced to date.

And I doubt you could.

Your memory hasn't improved one iota I see.
BTW, all that is nunya.

Poor grammar in this sentence, "The kids trying and he's not god enough move on."

He proved his point, when you have no argument you continually resort to cheap personal attack.

However, I am embarrassed at the personal attacks.

But do it without insulting the guys out there trying their best. Even if they're on the bench they don't deserve the garbage said about them as people.

Absolutely and those so-called fans doing such things deserve absolutely zero respect.

If there's one thing I know for sure, it's this: GSVol has the uncanny ability to take a thread and make you not even remember what it was originally about. Sometimes that's a magnificent talent, my friend!

were you not aware that it's the fans' function to get the players ready to "bust a gut?"

Tell me how a fan behaving in such a manner as to discourage his own team makes any sense whatsoever.

Seems counterintuitive to me but I am open to hearing your line of reasoning. Shoot Luke.

Honestly, if the fans embarrass people more than our team's play, they should probably cease being fans.

That is an idea.

If there's one thing I know for sure, it's this: GSVol has the uncanny ability to take a thread and make you not even remember what it was originally about. Sometimes that's a magnificent talent, my friend!

Thankee kindly. Same to you, BTW, we may have something else in common, I think my brain exploded sometime during the 4th qtr of the Auburn game, sort of a deja vu to the '85 UCLA game.

Since we are talking about Vol fans and their behavior and/or what effect do they have on the outcomes of games and being my ever positive self, I propose the following:

At happy hour today, we all go have a couple of peppermint schnapps and beers and all get on the same page, I mean how far can we get if we are always fighting amongst ourselves?

Those who choose not to imbibe, could have a peanut butter, jelly sandwich.

Maybe then we would fly like an eagle, haven't we all gone as low as we want to go?

Maybe Clemson would fire their AD, he in turn would fire Bowden and hire Kiffin, Fulmer would step up to the UT AD position and we would go on a 51 game winning streak, breaking Wilkinson's Oklahoma record.

Whether or not all that would happen only the future can tell, meanwhile we could have a good time with our schnapps and beer.

Time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin
Into the future

For a group of folks that pride ourselves on being more welcoming and all-around better fans that opposing schools (see: Alabama), the actions of many are pretty embarrassing. We make fun of others' plight all year, deriding every silly 'chicken little' thread posted on their boards...then we turn around and have a complete meltdown on our players and coaches.

I understand if you feel that Fulmer is past his prime and needs to retire.

I understand Crompton has played poorly and we need to look at other options.

I understand this team's performance has let us all down.

What I don't understand is how fans, who supposedly support our players, can constantly badmouth our team. Calling Crompton "Cross Eyed Crapton," etc and Fulmer whatever new word in the long line of insults that come up, is outrageous. Makes us look like a bunch of idiots.

Criticize the play, but don't belittle the athletes that WE recruited to play for us. They didn't have to come here. We recruited them, and now we're gonna sit around and bad mouth them? What a joke.
Sorry for the rant, but I find it hard to believe a true fan of the program would talk about 18-22 year olds like that. I'm upset about being 1-3. It kills me. But I don't choose to treat other people with that kind of disrespect. It's easy to be a fan when you win every game. It's easy to talk about our guys like they're God's gift. You can tell by reading and hearing stuff from folks that they just want to ride the wave when the sun is out.

I'm going to have to agree with you on that. With down grading Pro football players I can see because they are getting paid to play. But making comments about young adults that just got out of highschool is wrong. And I feel we are losing recruits because of the way our fans act towards our players and coaches.

But people are going to do whatever they want to do so there is no use in stopping the nonsence.
