Our fan base is pretty embarrassing, really.

for a group of folks that pride ourselves on being more welcoming and all-around better fans that opposing schools (see: Alabama), the actions of many are pretty embarrassing. We make fun of others' plight all year, deriding every silly 'chicken little' thread posted on their boards...then we turn around and have a complete meltdown on our players and coaches.

I understand if you feel that fulmer is past his prime and needs to retire.

I understand crompton has played poorly and we need to look at other options.

I understand this team's performance has let us all down.

What i don't understand is how fans, who supposedly support our players, can constantly badmouth our team. Calling crompton "cross eyed crapton," etc and fulmer whatever new word in the long line of insults that come up, is outrageous. Makes us look like a bunch of idiots.

Criticize the play, but don't belittle the athletes that we recruited to play for us. They didn't have to come here. We recruited them, and now we're gonna sit around and bad mouth them? What a joke.

We don't won't ride the wave when the sun is out but if you support crapton then its your opinion but i along with alot of true fans believe its time for a change and i am not saying i want the coaches fired i want a new qb that doesn't throw at the dirt. If you think thats not being a true fan then so be it i don't accept medicore for this program that has so much prestige so if you do then you are not a true fan either!!!!!

I always liked Erik Ainge. I thought he was one of the best QBs to play for UT, thanks to his pocket presence and ability to get the ball to either a receiver or out of bounds as opposed to a sack. I couldn't stand it when people asked for Crompton at every damn game over the last 2 years.
Then, the day came. Jonathan Crompton's time was here. It was the guy who lived in the shadow of Ainge and ran over that LSU DB. Everyone wanted him to be our Tebow. I was somewhat skeptical when the reins were handed to him, because I trusted the judgement of Cutcliffe. I find it shockingly unsuprising that Crompton wasn't who we thought he was. He is the exact same player that Cutcliffe didn't trust, yet the Vol faithful wanted him crowned as the top SEC QB before taking over a new system in his first year as a starter.
Why in the world fans can go from love to hate so quickly shocks me, though.
Fulmer
Good - Great - Best - Good - Awful - Decent - Dead
Ainge
Great - Good - Bad - Sometimes Bad - Better Than Rick - Great - Bad - Good - Terrible
Crompton
Good - Hope - Tebow-rific - Not As Good As We Thought - Better - Great - Bad Decisions - Worst QB Of All Time - Shouldn't Be Alive

Funny how everyone gets on board, then off board, then back on, then back off. Sorta reminds me of the 05 carousel...

I wouldn't worry too much about the negative posts. Unless something changes, most of these folks will have no say in any decision anyway. It's not "American Idol" or "Survivor" - we don't get to vote anyone off of the hill......and I doubt that the ones who do make these decisions are swayed by forum posts.

At least Vol fans are passionate enough about their program to get after anybody/anything that seems to be a threat to it. You won't see one thing on this board that you wouldn't see on any other SEC team's board if they were having a rough start too.(Except I think WE make better sense.) Yeah, we mouth off and say things we don't really mean and sometimes blame the wrong people and even sling a few insults from time to time, but when it's all said done we are Volunteers to the bone. So you can call us rednecks, whiners, Fulmerites, Negavols, WHATEVER...but if you are embarrassed by us, then we can point you to many other schools whose fan bases are simply apathetic. Perhaps you'd be more suited to one of those.

Passionate and wanting someone dead solely based on his quarterback play are 2 totally different things.

I don't want anybody dead. Neither does anybody else on this board.

Please. :shakehead:

I say that sums up how any typical fan is.

Sorry for the rant, but I find it hard to believe a true fan of the program would talk about 18-22 year olds like that. I'm upset about being 1-3. It kills me. But I don't choose to treat other people with that kind of disrespect. It's easy to be a fan when you win every game. It's easy to talk about our guys like they're God's gift. You can tell by reading and hearing stuff from folks that they just want to ride the wave when the sun is out.

So you would have us all throw a pep-party and be completely oblivious that something in Tennessee football is wrong? Sorry brother.....I pay for my Vol Merchandise....I pay for my Vol tickets....lastly, I paid for that education at that fine establishment. Therefore I am entitled to express my dissatisfaction. Thank you very much.

Glad you took time out from carrying Overstreet's jock to post this.

I scream excitement when we kick the **** out of someone so I have the right to boo them when we get the kick. That's the mentality of sports.

You missed the point entirely. Not even by just a little. Expressing dissatisfaction is perfectly fine. Personal insults are what I have an issue with.

Again, pointing out flaws is fine. I am upset at the play by our team, but saying "Crompton is playing like crap" and "Crompton is a piece of crap" are two different things.

I agree. Saying Crompton is playing like crap is being kind.

by harming recruiting.

You give us too much credit. The performance on the field far surpasses anything we could do. Kids want to know that they will be on TV, have an opportunity to play for championships, have an opportunity to appear in BCS Bowls, etc. Do that and the recruits will follow.
