Our defense!!!!!!

In ten years, all people will remember is another Vols beat down of Ky in football. No one remembers yards given up. No one. Enjoy the win.

We are a very poor tackling team. I'm watching these other games tonight and it's evident, we are terrible. This LSU and Arkansas game is a great example of how to hit and also wrap up. Brutal hits and solid tackling on both sides. Wish we had that.

Most on here annointed Shoop as one of the best DCs in the country. He has shown to be almost the complete opposite. This defense is Sunseri bad IMO. Extremely poor tackling and have not been able to really stop any team save Tenn Tech. Our defense is complete garbage. If UK had a decent QB, they would have beaten us.

I am happy for the win but I see major regression under Shoop. Hopefully he DRASTICALLY improves next year. At this point, I dont see it. I think next year's defense will be almost just as bad as this years.

Is it about intelligence and playing as a unit?

At Vanderbilt they were less talented, but more intelligent and had to play as a unit. At Penn State they were less talented, but more intelligent and had to play as a unit.

Do we have more talent but less intelligence and greater egos?

There is regression across the board aside from punting. The mortar is defective for the bricks.

Scoreboard is all that matters.
Isn't that what we hear when we lose.
There are no moral losses

I'm very pleased at how the offense played and certainly that we won. We still have a chance to play in the SECCG this year since we beat Ky and that's great. Agree in large part there.

But I'm beyond concerned that we gave up 443 rushing yards to a team who came in averaging 216. Our defense has been poor all year. As a lifelong fan, I like to see us play good, solid fundamental football and our defense is anything but this year.

No its not. Its about Bob Shoop not being as good as everyone thought he was.

The starting Kentucky tailback is a good player--but our Dline was not good, we missed a lot of tackles, and our defense simply isn't very good. When you lose three regular defensive linemen, including two starters, you're going to have problems.

My problem with the defense is that they have not improved at all. I mean improvement with the players which we have on the field. Also alignment is a major issue, in fact we normally shift away from plays. I am more disappointed in Shoop than any coach on the team. He is not a genius.

And some of us have been making these points since the FL and GA games....and getting hammered for it.

This is the worst UT defense since Sunseiri.

I've been disappointed in our defense as a whole. But I don't blame shoop. Our injury situation cannot be over stated enough! We are basically playing 3rd string DEs at DT. Our secondarys banged up. I thought seeing cam and Foreman back proved how bad we've missed them. The linebacker situation is killing us the most. I full expect us to have a better defense next year. Name wise may not sound as good but another year for Shoop to really install and teach how he wants things done, plus getting healthy I think it will be good.

Ultimately it comes down to this. Injuries on Defense has had its effect on the many position changes we all know that have occurred this season. More than most teams have had to deal with since early in the year. Its been a makeshift defense all season. Second, what decent depth we started with was good on paper but in reality it was with underclassmen with little experience. Once our core position players started falling due to injuries the game time experience showed its face. Then as you should know those backups started going down. Players were then having to move over to new positions on the D line and the rest of the defense. It is hard to find any consistancy in these circumstances. So, do not blame Shoop on all of this. It can not all fall on him. It is up to his position coaches to have players ready to step up and be effective. But then again injuries have depleated what reserves are left. One positive thing that should come out of all of this is the gametime experience these backups are getting. The term "Next man up" is over rated especially when our backups are getting hurt too.

I just wonder if anyone noticed a couple of walk ons playing DT at times yesterday. Maybe they don't know what a DT is? At this point I just don't know.

Last game we had a cancer on offense in Hurd. This week we had a cancer on defense in Kongbo. Kongbo is a distraction. I hate to lose players, but you can't let players get away with this crap. Hurd is history, and the offense looks better.

If we indeed make it to SECCG , Bama will set the all time SEC and NCAA rushing record in a single game . I recall they also had over 400 yards rushing against us this year . And Shoop said in August no one would be able to run against us .

Do you guys forget so easily. How many times did the D shut down the other teams O in the second half to get a come from behind win when our O could not move the ball. They never gave up even when we were down 20 points because of fumbles or INTs our O did. Yesterday the bent but didn't break and KY only got field goals. That my friend's was with a banged up and injured players coming back like Sutton maybe not 100%. Boy people now a days have such a short memory. Those come from behind games our O could not even move the ball in the first half. REMEMBER

Who?
Bain is a better build to play the position than Mixon or Lewis who got around 90% of snaps opposite Vickers, and I never saw Bain on the field. Picou played, but not enough.
They arent even playing the bodies they have available. They wear down the 1st string with too many snaps. They even quit rotating in Phillips in the 2nd half.

In August he had a nearly full complement of players healthy enough to run his defense.

D was horrid. Makes me wonder if they need to dumb it down and just play some kind of simple base D.
