PMC2726 - Two things about Dooley: He knows what he's doing and how to get there but will need time. He will NOT ACCEPT MEDIOCRITY. You can forget that one.

This will end up being a very nice, respectable class. Nothing more, nothing less. With that said, if this class represents this staff hitting it's stride, go ahead and fire them now. We won't get past the middle of the pack in the SEC.

What'd you think of last years class? Seemed like they worked out well to me! Especially an underrated player by the name of Zach Fulton!!!

I am OK with the class we will have, but nothing more. This type of class will be sufficient to compete in the SEC, but not win anything significant (eg. SECC). I also understand the on-field performance and the recruiting are interactive processes: one will help another.
I think it's time for Dooley and his staff to start performing on the field, and that will be crucial to our recruiting success.

I think we will start performing on the field and that will help turn things around. Hell, we went 6-6 with the 3rd coach in three years and not much recruiting time. CDD is laying the foundation for a comeback and it'll be nice to follow along! :clapping:

PMC- Bama only has 2 five stars as of right now on rivals... Thats only two more than us. Are those two guys going to keep us from catching them in talent?

OK you hardcore recruiting guys... here are the big names (debatable sure but i think everyone would agree with most of them) from the legendary 1998 team. Anybody know what their star rating was coming out of high school? I'd be curious to know and i can't find the info anywhere.

Shaun Ellis
Donte Stallworth
Fred Weary
Chad Clifton
Reggie Coleman
Cosey Coleman
Peerless Price
Andre Lott
Jamal Lewis
Al Wilson
Shawn Bryson
Travis Stephens
Travis Henry
Tee Martin
Deon Grant

Was Rivals around then?

Not that they're five stars, but the big difference makers are a must. We have been lacking on O.

I agree, but you saw it on the field this year. We have a QB with massive loads of potential. Two WR's that could be stars. We need a big play RB and TE. I think our o-line could be one of the best in country in 2012.

His point that Alabama is signing tons of 5-stars while we are signing 4 and 3 stars was absurd though.

pmc...really not getting your logic, if what you are saying is true, how did Texas and Alabama, and Florida manage to lose with all their talent....it doesn't take drinking the kool-aid to see Dooley and his staff improved the team over the year and is having a solid recruiting year. You negative guys really don't know how this is going to turn out any better than the overly optimistic, so be doom and gloom all you want, if that floats your boat, but not buying your all knowing attitude....

I understand the point you keep making. It still doesn't change the fact that unless Saban leaves Alabama for greener pastures, Dooley is going to have to find a way to beat him at something -- recruiting, on the field, whatever -- if we are going to get over the hump and start beating Alabama again consistently. If not, what's the point?

Ive never seen someone more in love with Saban.

I hope upon hope upon hope that you and Justin are right about that, b/c I just don't see us cracking the top 3 or 5 consistently any time soon. And I hate mediocrity -- life is way to short.

You're a Memphis fan and a Braves fan.

JMO, but I think in the end this staff in general is going to trust their own evaluation over what any of the recruiting service evaluators opinions are. Given the fact that nearly 70% of the All American team was made up of 3 star guys, all those services leave a lot to be desired. I don't give a flying flip what kind of a pro they are going to make all I want is them to be successful at UT. It ain't UT's job to train them to be pros but to be a championship team in the NCAA. The NFL could lock put forever and I'd never care one bit.

this class so far is not really sexy but its solid...very solid and thats all we needed. we have alot of young talent and now we need to go out and get some soild guys and i think we have done that. i really like how this staff is building this class. ill be the first to eat crow and say im converted. i hope we can keep this staff together for at least a couple of years.

That's also 6-7th in the SEC!! Are you saying that Dooley can coach up 3 and 4 stars consistently enough so that they can BEAT 5 stars coached by Saban on the same field? I'm not trying to bash Dooley. I think he has a tough job, but he also has an incredible amount to offer -- like playing time, like being on an SEC team, like playing in front of 100,000+ every weekend, like an amazing new all-football facility, etc. Winning and losing records have very little to do with recruiting anymore -- where do you think Florida ends up this year after a losing season and a new coach who has never coached a down as a HC? The excuses can only last so long. At the end of the day, we either catch up or we don't.....and recruiting is the place to start.

Sorry for not drinking the Orange Dooley-Aid so quickly.

Also, don't forget about Wilcox coaching up lesser talent at Boise and look what they have done over the past 6-7yrs. I think we will see a tremendous difference with the new S&C coach too; just hope our guys can finish the basic training he'll be giving them. From the initial feedback, it seems the guys are really being responsive to his training albeit sore. I agree with some other posters that 2012 will probably be the real deal where we see the most results but I think we will see marked improvement this year.

this is a very solid class but people have to be realistic...with the shape the program was in when CDD got it, you have to give the man a 5 yr plan unless he isn't showing progress... and with a team coming off a 6-7 season, this class is definately progress...particularly with all the top talent that we are still in on this late in the game. most of these kids started being recruited by other schools while dooley was still at LA tech...that being said, look for our 2012 class to be impressive(top 10). 2013 to be stellar. FLA st is putting together a stellar class this year, but they had the fortune of UF and UM completely falling off in the same season...not to mention being in the most talent rich state in the country. this comparison is being made because Dooley and Fisher are both first year coaches, with Jimbo having another huge leg up by already being on the staff before taking over as head coach.

All of this speculation about if we will have a top five class in the near future is fine and dandy. However, i am more worried about having consistently top 15 classes whose members STAY AT UT AND PERFORM UP TO EXPECTATIONS. 90% of a top 15 class on the field and performing is a heck of a lot better than 50% of a top 5 class leaving us with nothing but unfulfilled expectations and holes in our lineup.

Excellent points! Look at how many recruits we lost from the Fulmer to Lane to Dooley transition. Who knows if those guys would have worked out, point is, a lot of potential was lost. By the same token, I'm sure it was good for some of those to leave. There were great expectations for Oku and although there is great potential there, to me, he didn't live up to those expectations. Not saying he's a bad kid but there could be a myraid of reasons why he hasn't worked out as good as anticipated. We have to remember these are 18-19 yr old kids. I know there are certainly some things I would like to change when I was that age.

This...IMO CDD has a great ability to evaluate talent without utilizing "recruiting service star system" evaluations...This class is designed to plug the gaps from the previous attrition and IMO will accomplish that and more...Star gazing doesn't assure championships, just ask Texas or Gator fans....IMO 2012 will be the real breakthrough recruiting class with CDD but I like what he's done so far....
