I was looking at how much speed and athleticism we are adding to our defense. And I started thinking about how much size we're giving up with the addition of speed.

Then I realized, I'm not even sure what the base defense is.

STAR: Jaylen Reeves-Maybin
MLB: Darrin Kirkland Jr
OLB/DE: Austin Smith

DE: Derrick Barnett
DT: Khalil McKienzie
DT: Danny O'brien
DE: Corey Vereen

CB: Cameron Sutton
CB: Justin Martin
FS: Todd Kelly Jr.
SS: Rshaan Gualden

Is this the base d? If so... then what is it? 4-2-5? 4-3? a 5-2??

Shoop says noone will be able to run on us. I find that hard to believe if we have just 2 linebackers and just 4 man front.

You just told all of our secrets. Thanks guy.

Move JRM to Will and then put a guy like Cortez at SLB.

As opposed to running a lot of nickel, our new DC likes to play a faster lb (McDowell) who can walk out and cover slots

Our secondary will free up our line backers to play run 1st. Our Dline will tie up their Oline to allow our line backers to make plays too.

We gotta watch out for quick slants and screens, any slow developing routes or run plays will get smashed.

Out defense will lead us to Tampa.

Jump higher Vols.

So you think McDowell will be the STAR? I could see that. But I could also see JRM there. Is the STAR a part of the base D?

See, I remember Shoop saying Austin Smith goes back to OLB in regular defense. So does this mean Smith goes to DE during Nickel?
Does this mean he starts?

Also... Im a little worried that only 1 of our starting DBs is over 190 lbs.

The star is a guy who will walk out of the box a lot to play pass. I can't imagine JRM being used there. They will keep him in the box. As far as Austin, we have more of a run stopping star and a pass first star like Bates or McDowell who rotate

seems like through spring theres gonna 2 lineups

De-barnett
DT-mckenzie
Dt-O brien/ tuttle when healthy
DE-vereen/ kongbo(maybe)

OLB-JRM
Mike-DKjr
Sam- Bynum

S-kelly
S-gaulden/ berry(maybe)
Cb-sutton
cb-sutton

and in nickel take bynum out and replace with nickel back currently foreman but I would be suprsed to see gaulden in the base and move to nickel back with berry and kelly at safety

were loaded with nickel options could see anyone from foreman, gaulden, warrior, abernathy, osborne all get reps there

What you've illustrated and what Shoop has traditionally run is a 4-3, with one of the linebackers (the star) a kind of hybrid...but not a nickelback. There will be nickel packages of course but nowhere close to the volume that Jancek employed.

The DBs may be small but tackling isn't a problem for them. Martin is the most suspect, but Cam, TKJr, and RG can all lay the wood

Im more concerned about them getting off blocks and being able to change play development when theyre not actually making the play.

Our linebackers are also light. Even our DEs... the same.
We have a lot of speed out there

Bama is about the only power run team we play.

What we have seen with the LB recruiting are more athletic players with size who can cover as well as be run stoppers. I would say that we will see the 4-3-4 more this season. Then it will change to nickel on passing situations.

The base 4-3 Shoop plays is with the Star position at weakside LB. The star position is a hybrid linebacker that essentially is a strong safety type. A guy that can cover/blitz/support the run. This is a jack of all trades type guy that will often times be lined up over the slot wr. I really think they would like Sapp to win this role. JRM and Kirkland will be the traditional Mike and Sam backer.

I agree with most of this. JRM plays Will. The star will be the Sam.

Great... our DB's are small, our LB's are small...

What's next, is someone going to tell me KMac is down to 323 or something cause that would be preposterous?!

Edit: KMac is down to 323. We now have the smallest defense in the country.
