OUCH Pruitt a poor man's Butch??

Opinion: Jeremy Pruitt Is Coaching Like A Poor Man’s Butch Jones

It is now been over 24 hours since Tennessee’s humiliating 34-7 loss to Kentucky in Neyland Stadium and this loss stings even more.
That was Kentucky’s first win over the Vols in Neyland Stadium since 1984. 36 Years. You thought that stat was bad? Well, buckle up.
The last time a Kentucky football team defeated the Vols by 27? 1935. No, I am not joking. 1935. Literally the last time Kentucky won by that margin was before World War II.

I have seen a lot of terrible moments in my 22 years of life as a Tennessee fan. The embarrassing loss to Wyoming in 2008, LSU and UNC in 2010, Oklahoma in 2015, Florida in 2017 and Georgia State last year, just to name a few.
This tops the list and it ain’t even close. This loss feels much worse than the Georgia State game. I have tried to give this guy opportunity after opportunity. Folks, this guy is not the answer and it is beyond obvious. We are in year three of the Jerry Pruitt era and we are getting blown out by freaking Kentucky at home.
We are not even competitive against Kentucky. We are paying a football coach over $4 million a year and this is the end result. We have a coach who refuses to give any other QB an opportunity. I have never seen a coach give a quarterback as many opportunities as Pruitt has given to Jarrett Guarantano.
Guarantano throws two straight pick-sixes, you only give J.T. Shrout three plays as an opportunity, and you bring back Guarantano onto the field? What logic does that make?

It is year three now and we still do not have a QB. Pruitt has failed to develop Guarantano into being a competent QB. Sure, you can make the excuses that he has had a couple different OC’s and QB coaches. But this all comes down to the head coach. This is just inexcusable.
No one expected him to be a world-beater, but Guarantano is still making freshman mistakes. Having the same game plan and expecting different results week in and week out is the definition of insanity. Pruitt, yesterday, in the post-game press conference blamed his masks as part of the loss.
No this is not a joke, he literally said his mask caused communication issues. These excuses are just pathetic. These type of excuses are something Butch Jones would say.

You know what, Pruitt is a poor man’s Butch Jones. In fact, I would argue that he is worse than Jones.
29 games into his tenure at Tennessee, Jones was 14-15. Pruitt is 15-14. Yes, Pruitt’s record is better than Jones’ so far. But here is the difference between the two’s tenures.
Butch’s teams got better and were competitive against Florida and Oklahoma by year three. We are losing to Kentucky by 27 at home. This team and program is going backwards.
This team literally quit in the 3rd quarter when Kentucky scored their third touchdown. At least when it came to Butch’s teams, they would wait until November before they quit. At least Jones’ teams were fairly competitive against Florida and Georgia. At least Jones’ teams beat Kentucky.
We haven’t even made it halfway to the season and this team has appeared to quit. Much like this team, this fanbase is starting to quit on this football program. Alabama rolls into town this weekend and that will be a loss before we have a week off.
Pruitt and this team need to get it together and salvage this season in the second half of the season. But, if we continue to see what we saw Saturday, Tennessee isn’t winning another game this year.
This is the Lyle Jones of hot takes.

Josh Dobbs was the only thing that kept Butch from hitting 4-8 and getting canned a lot sooner. If you can't tell that this team is significantly improved on both sides of the ball from Butch's 2017 team (post-Dobbs), then you simply don't know football. Pruitt finally got us a win against Auburn and has beat Muschamp two years in a row. Clearly this program has more progress to make and is still capable of putting up a really bad performance like the UK game...but most of the issues at this point really center around inconsistent QB play. They've got to get Bailey ready and get Maurer up to speed and healthy. Maurer's injury and Bailey being quarantined really set back the development of a good back-up/viable competition for JG.

It's an unfortunate situation to be in, but I'm more focused on seeing if they get those guys ready. The team had a terrible start last season and it got turned around...and that was bad play on both sides of the ball. This time there are small things to fix on defense and the QB situation needs to be fixed. I think it will get figured out.

Yep

A historic loss to UK is proof if improvement!! I mean last year CJPs historic loss came against the lowly Georgia State. UK would kill Ga St...so that is obvious improvement...

This is beyond dumb. Our 2015 and 2016 teams were loaded and Butch squandered them. I’ll never forgive him for running the hurry up against OU up two scores in the 4th quarter.

I work a lot, so I don't get on here much anymore, but I have been a Vols fan for 48 years since I was 5 years old. I think Coach Pruitt is a great recruiter, and has shown from his previous jobs as a defensive coordinator that he has a great defensive mind. However, up to this point, he has not proven himself to be a very good head coach. Honestly, I think the best UT will ever do record wise with Pruitt in the regular season would be around 8-4, and that to me seems to be his top level of performance as a head coach. For me personally, that's not good enough. Eventually, before I die, Ha-Ha, I would like to see the Vols make a run at an SEC Championship and a shot to get in the playoffs for the National Title. I personally don't believe that Coach Pruitt can lead Tennessee to those goals. I believe Coach Fulmer made an error of judgment in hiring him for his current position, and eventually either Coach Fulmer or another Athletic Director, will have to make the decision to remove Coach Pruitt as the Head Coach. Let me make one thing clear, Coach Pruitt will be given every opportunity to succeed by Coach Fulmer, so I think Pruitt will be here for at least 2 more years. After that, all bets are off, in my opinion. I anticipate Tennessee will continue losing annually to the current "BIG 3" on our schedule: Florida, Bama and Georgia. I don't believe a Pruitt team can win those games, I hope I am wrong, but based on the current sample size so far, it doesn't look like UT will be winning those games very soon. Sorry for the long post, but we just seem to be like a hamster on a wheel or it's essentially "groundhog day" every football season, we are having to play the waiting game for continuity but after being jackhammered by Kentucky, which is completely UNACCEPTABLE, to any Vols fan, I just don't see Coach Pruitt being successful here and becoming a consistent "big time" winner. I appreciate the opportunity to express my thoughts and opinions... GO BIG ORANGE!

That’s my point. Pruitt is nothing like Butch. He’s an actual coach who knows the game. I think when he and Chaney have their guy, emphasis on “Their Guy” things will be different. Salter will be the first one that is their guy. We HAVE to lock down Simpson to be the next GUY for about a million reasons. Once we get this rolling the offense will click.
I truly believe that.
Why did it take them 4 recruiting classes to get “their guy”

Quit accepting garbage from this program and its coach. He is being paid a lot of money to have us in contention in the East at the very least...not to force feed us humiliating 27 point losses at home to Kentucky for gawds sake. That loss Saturday was shameful. A complete and utter embarrassment. Unforgivable. He has brought shame and humiliation to this program when he was brought in to instill pride and accomplishment. Fulmer says "Tennessee is BACK". Wow. Premature statement of the century. Well...we are back. Back to being the SECs laughing stock. Congrats Beldar...and thanks for sapping and stomping on any pride we DID have in a historic program. Great job Kojak.

But you’ll forgive Pruitt for the loss to Georgia State? 🤔

Chaney and Pruitt haven’t had 4 recruiting cycles together. They inherited JG through Butch, they got Maurer and Shrout through Helton, Bailey wasn’t even recruited by Chaney when he was at UGA, but he pursued Haynes King once he got here to go along with Bailey. Salter will be the first the first guy that they both recruited and signed together. Hopefully Ty Simpson will be next. Actually, he better be the next.

That’s the point though. A good coach should be able to field a competitive team without a quarterback of Dobb’s caliber. Pruitt hasn’t done that.
I was under the impression that this thread was comparing Butch to Pruitt. Imo Pruitt is a competent quarterback away from fielding a good football team.

This cant be serious.... I understand being upset with Pruitt, but saying he's basically Butch Jones is a joke.

It's like comparing a member of the band to the middle linebacker... (Literally, that's what you did)

He is about like Muschamp. His offenses got him fired at UF. Only difference is they knew when to pull the plug. 3 years in and the offense can't sustain one decent drive in a football game against a defense with a pulse. Eerily similar.

Can we please knock off the bull$hit now? We all know that Jeremy Pruitt would never be in this position.

Right

Ol Dooley was a recruiting machine. That man lived to get good players....🙄🙄🙄
Butch could recruit well. He never seemed to value line play enough in my opinion. It’s literally everything else about the man from scheme, game management to player development that I found him to be awful at. Pruitt in my opinion shows some upside in all those area’s. If he doesn’t get a decent QB it won’t matter. Last Saturday was inexcusable

I want to see what Pruitt's QB decision here on out. He must know that JG is not the answer. Hopefully he'll make a good decision between the Alabama game and the games following. If he puts JG out for good after Alabama, then at least we'll know he's planning for next year. If JG stays no. 1 the rest of the year. Then I'll have lost all confidence in his coaching IQ. I know he may know X's and O's. But starting to wonder about his abililty to plan as a team.
