"When I started Gameday in the mid 90's. Tennessee was the USC of the nation. They recruited anybody they wanted."

Anybody else just hear Herbstreit's comments about our program? He compared the 90's Vols to USC and said we were getting any player we wanted. This resulted in winning games and putting players in the NFL.
Then the next generation of players came in and it was all about getting to the NFL. Says we've had good talent, but no team mentality for the last 7 years or so.

What say you? I completely agree with him.

You left out his point, though, how we ended up with players who were more interested in making themselves into great NFL prospects, as opposed to the main goal being creating a great TEAM. A smattering of greatly talented individuals doesn't do squat unless everyone gets on the same page.

Right now, it doesn't seem as if the guys on our squad are reading the same book, let alone being on the same page. Disjointed and awkward, something that needs to fall on the staff. I'm not piling on CPF and crew, but thats where the buck stops when it comes to continuity issues.

My friend, that is the coaches job.

One of these days, we may have one....AGAIN.

...segment on "What's wrong with the Vols?"

Every week, the crew breaks down the crisis here in Rocky Top. Many believe that ESPN hates UT, but I think they really want the Vols to be good.

If they didn't care, our downfall wouldn't be an emphasis on the show. This is one more reason I think change is necessary around here. Herbstreit said he's observed a downfall since the Kelly Washington era. He said when he first started doing Gameday in the mid 90's, Tennessee was the USC of the country.

This "the program has been on a steady decline and change is needed" topic is no longer a local issue and has officially reached the national level.

Anyone else notice this?

There's still enough talent to win in Knoxville, but there's not as much talent as there was in the late 90's and first few years of the 2000's.

I still think the Tennessee job can be an immediate turnaround for the right coach.

I agree. Let's hope we get the right man first time around.

Exactly. These notions of a one-two win season with a new coach are ludicrous. A new coach can and should make us competitive next year and able to draw recruits in quickly.

Absolutely. No Team mentality, Lack of coaching up talent. It also does not help when you can't go into Georgia or North Carolina, South Carolina, and Missippi and get the top players ,because the states are locking down players and staying instate.

Yep...plenty of good talent...at least as much as Texas Tech/Missouri/Kansas/South Carolina/Auburn/..etc

There's no such thing as bad press.

It's more a smashing of Fulmer than a smashing of UT. Herbstreit basically said UT belongs with Southern Cal - Fulmer hauls in the talent, but can't cultivate the chemistry.

If we can get someone like Saban in here we will get Saban results.

How about Herbstreits comment on Kelly Washington, "the arrow through Knoxville," or words to that effect. I thought that was almost as powerful as the "USC" comparison!

PS Screw Corso and his predictions.
