Other head coach options (merged)

Did anybody hear what Jimmy Hyams said yesterday? That Charlie Strong was hired for the UT job at the college football hall of fame ceremony and that when he returned to Louisville they talked him into staying and that the day before CBJ was announced at UT that he was announced as the new head coach of Colorado State. Wonder how true all that is?

Kelly turned us down for Notre Dame. Sumlin/Patterson were mid major guys and at the time, the jury was still out on them. Once again, the marketplace of coaches were not better than sticking with Phil and his historical trends. And those trends were bouncing back with an average of atleast a 3 win improvement in the next season. He also had a great class coming in.

I didn't want Fulmer gone. Agree with all your points on keeping him. That class was loaded. Those were the top up and coming coaches at the time we fired Fulmer and we could have had any of them. Hindsight is 20/20, obviously going any other route than kiffin would have been a better decision.

I don't see the fit with Chip if we still had Big Nose or Frankenstein leading our AD.

Lets be honest, unless you are winning, an incoming Athletic Director is looking to make his own hire for football. We even went back to the family. I trust Currie to do everything in his power to go after the big guys (Chip).

Simple fact of the matter is that all the East teams have plateaued. So if there is a stagnant time in the division and we have the roster to win right now, you have to upgrade the coaching staff.

Nothing personal against Butch. Its a bad business decision to keep him and settle for 8-9 wins against horrible competition when there are coaches out there that could have a Saban like impact. And by that, I mean they come in and win right away within 2 seasons.

If Currie lands Chip Kelly then he will be AD of the year.

Part of me still holding out for Gruden. Just seeing on ESPN Gruden to coach Vols in 2018 would be amazing. Gruden in the Vol Walk. Take Butch face off stadium and up Gruden and his facial expressions. I'm getting a Gruden thinking about it lol

Pretty widely known stuff. All true. Butch even mentioned it at his opening press conference in a round about way.

So now you're changing the argument.

This was about Patterson if he was hired to replace Phil.

Since Urban was around for 2 years after Phil with very beatable teams, beating him wasn't going to be that hard. Hell, look how close Kiffin played him.

Saban was still beatable those 2-3 years after Phil.

Beating Meyer/Saban in the late 2000's and beating them in this current decade are very different.

How am I changing the argument? Didn't even know we were ARGUING. We have different ideas on what an acceptable hire looks like. Far as Saban/Urban beatibility factors then and now? Might want to google those records. They were winning CHAMPIONSHIPS in those 2-3 season windows. Meaning they beat teams more talented than us to get there. :)

Totally FALSE...it was COLORADO. :wink2:

If the standard is to beat Saban or Urban, you haven't listed any names that qualify...unless you want to add Freeze. :)

There were just as many (if not more) REALISTIC candidates back in 08. Butch Davis was a homerun hire to be made at UNC...regardless of how his tenure ended. Chris Peterson WASN'T a home run hire back then...but he was at Boise State, and it took a job like Washington to pry him out of there. Dan Mullen is a good coach who's turned down interviews at Florida and Miami. Color me skeptical that Tennessee is a bigger lure. Chip Kelly caught lightning in a bottle. Brilliant schematic coach that doesn't strike me as a program builder...if Norvell is West Coast dying to get back, I bet Kelly sets the trail. :gone: Much as I support our coaches, the hunts are fun. Everyone has the answer but it's rarely the same one. :)

Kelly didn't catch lightning. If he did, Oregon wouldn't have went to dogsh!t after he left.

He would win here, that is fact. If you want to argue with history, go ahead.

No he wouldn't. His style would get destroyed in the SEC. But you're a genius so you must be right...

Don't confuse Squib with facts. Head might explode

11 and 13 wins (including a championship game appearance) in the first two seasons. Then a 9 win campaign before last season's dud. :) "Dogsh!t"? Beginning to distrust your definitions brah.

Yes, the decline of the Oregon program in the years after him were sharp. Shows how badly Kelly's departure hurt them. Also, where is Helfrich coaching at now?

I personally don't believe Jim Bob would leave the NFL to become a college coach. He's a good offensive coordinator and is most likely headed to be an NFL head coach within the next 10-years.

Tee on the other hand I think would come here and we know he can recruit. The thing that would deter Tee from coming here is his legacy. If he didn't do well, he's no longer the guy who led us to an NC. Now he's the fired coach at TN

Here is the thing about Tee, he would likely get 3-4 million to be Head Coach here. That's the typical UT price range.

If we were to give him a blank check to hire a staff, I think he could be a lifer. I find it very hard to name one school that he could potentially leave us for if he got hot from the start here and won.

"Sharp". Stay away from that one too playa! :w00t: I assumed Helfrich was doing tv...like Kelly. :)

I would take Les Miles. It really makes me laugh when you people say no to him. He avg 9+ wins over his tenure in LSU against the west and we know how much tougher the west is compared to the east. He would be great in the east. Have us competing if not winning east on consistent basis. He and his staff developed players and sent them to the pros.

Obviously I'd like stoops and Meyer and these dream scenario. But Les Miles would gladly take this job and succeed.

And which one is gonna get a coaching job because of the other? Where Chip goes, Helfrich follows.

Maybe...theory hasn't been tested. Once upon a time, Bill Belichick followed Parcells around...who's considered the superior coach? :hmm:
