OT Penalty discussion (merged)

Foster's was a dead ball penalty (after the play) where as UK's penalty occurred during the play therefore doesn't have an effect on the next period for some reason

So UK can basically kill Berry during the play if they wanted. Berry is really lucky???!!!

A UK fan on catspause made a good point (it's true) regarding the face mask. It seems they agree that it was odd they weren't penalized. It was suggested that the whole team could have run onto the field to make the tackle. I do, however, recall reading about a black-and-white Cotton Bowl in which a player left the sideline to make a tackle that may have saved a TD. That TD was awarded.

Penn Wagers is a great ref, but for some reason I ques his crew. We got some bad calls and so did they, but it just seems like they got all of the close calls. As long as we get a decent shot against LSU Sat, thas fine. The men in stripes pretty much took the game away from us 3 yrs ago against Auburn. One thing I saw, was late in the game, the officials never called a holding pen all day, until the final drive of regulation and they get KY for holding, we got a break there.

One guess what team he played for...

Here's a hint :bammer:

Perhaps the most famous such incident took place in the 1954 Cotton Bowl game between Alabama and Rice. As Dicky Maegle of Rice sped down the right sideline for an apparent 95-yard touchdown run midway in the second quarter, Tommy Lewis, Alabama's starting fullback, impulsively left his spot on the bench and tackled Maegle at the Crimson Tide 40. Referee Cliff Shaw awarded the touchdown to Maegle

agree on all points except "PennWagers crew being good". They flat SUCK. Anytime a crew becomes a "part of the game" with thier calls, they loose the "good crew" status. Good crews are there and in control of the game, but if at anytime the calls leave reason and they efeect the outcome of a game with subjective calls, they cease to be a "good Crew"

Here's another good one from catspause: Apparently, when UT picked off UK's 2-pt attempt in OT #3 (my affiliate was on the UF game by then), the ball was fumbled out of bounds at the 1. But, the ref incorrectly signalled a touchback, as if the ball hit the pylon. That created some confusion in the stands, because if that were true, then UK would have been awarded a 1-pt safety.

bottom line, you can't throw the ball in frustration like that.

you just can't.

then McFadden should have been penalized when he spiked the ball after being run out of bounds during the Ark-UT game.

I was on a plane and missed the UT-Kentucky result, but I did see the replay, and was wondering why there was no penalty of yardage afterwards.

1) Shouldn't the facemask penalty have been enforced on Kentucky's next possession, i.e. the Wildcats should have started on the 40 of Tennessee?
2) Either that or there should have been half the distance to the goal on Tennessee's ensuing OT drive.

Golden Blogs were also wondering about this: The California Golden Blogs :: Loophole in the Rules

i never thought about the entire team coming out to tackle Berry, but yes that would be completely acceptable right now. if i were a coach, and the other team was about to return it for a touchdown, why not send the whole team out there? no repercussions, they dont win, you dont lose, next overtime. now THAT is ridiculous. wow what a terrible oversight by the rules committee, this needs to be changed.

The ref that threw the flag on Foster was ready to end the game so he could go eat some left over turkey, bet he was suprise when the vols scored on the first play from the 40.

When I saw the take down on Berry I was so mad. Then they say that the penelty that they called on the field would not carry over to the next over time. Holy Cow was I mad.

Then they made that BS Unsportsman Like call on Foster after he was clearly out of bounds and put us on the fourty.

Why is it ok for players to score a touchdown and dance out of bounds, but when Foster toses a ball back onto the field they give us fifteen.

The officiating crew may have been following the OT rules but this needs to change. Other wise after any turnover in OT its open season.

Also in my opinion I think Berry may have been able to go all the way after that awsome cut back.

It wasn't BS. Chucking a ball 15 yards is going to result in a penalty, regardless of where you are on the field.

It's not okay to act like that. Frustration sets in, I understand that, but tossing a ball like that is a penalty.

A comment on that Cal blog posted this rule. This rule was enforced when the Bama player ran on the field to make a tackle in the Cotton Bowl many years ago (discussed earlier in this thread).

“If an obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules occurs
during the game (A.R. 4-2-1-II).
PENALTY—The referee may take any action he considers equitable,
including assessing a penalty, awarding a score, or
suspending or forfeiting the game. ”

yah, the facemask was nasty. when i played HS fb, i got a facemask like that on me, and i nearly started a bench clearing brawl, so kudos to berry for holding his cool. but that should have carried over. one of the purposes of penalties is to protect players. and grabbing a facemask like that can seriously injure someone. the fact that it didnt carry over was simply insulting, or if that is the actual rule it should be changed

At first I thought awarding a score should be the call, but that is unfair to rest of the team who have fought hard to get into the OT situation. I think a first and goal from the 10 should likely be the penalty. I was told by someone that a change of possession in OT results in a dead ball, but does not seem to be the case as I have viewed the replay numerous times and cannot see any of the officiating crew blowing the play dead. Does someone here have any input regarding the ‘dead ball’ situation. If the play is blown dead, then no one gets hurt.

Maybe they should make a rule, if a kick is blocked in overtime, the ball is dead. then the next team takes over on the 25. Is this realistic?..Or am I missing something?

Sounds good to me, but it makes too much sense, so they probably won't do it.

The only other idea I have is to call a Technical Foul, with a free kick from the 25 yd line.
