As a storm spotter myself, I'm with you. It does look like there will be a period of sun in the early afternoon. I'm really concerned about this storm, especially the potential for up to baseball size hail and a few tornadoes.

P.S. Almost forgot the up to 80 MPH destructive winds. That alone could do just as much damage as a weak tornado.

Absolutely. Lapse rates are quite steep. combine that with the dry punch of air and the warm front enhancing sheer and you have a great atmosphere for super cell thunderstorms with powerful lift which will enhance the large hail threat. It looks like a lot of the doubt as to the severity of the event really centers on the strength of the surface low. A stronger low would add more dynamics (motion in the atmosphere), a weaker low would limit rotating super cells. My money is on daytime heating though. More clouds = less severe weather. A lot of the other ingredients for a severe weather outbreak will be in place regardless it looks like.

I am watching the weather channel right now and they just went over the models for tennessee tomorrow. Early rain, then it will clear out and they are really unsure if storms will fire up later in the day at this point. The storms will be to the north in Ohio and to the south in alabama. I bet tomorrow afternoon will be o.k.

I just watched the exact same thing! The guy was like "there will be storms in northern AL and from Kentucky on up to the Ohio. We're not sure what to expect for TN and the valley just yet." They basically didn't confirm or deny severe storms. They're too afraid to make the call right now it seems.

You need to look at multiple outlets instead of just TWC. The local media and the NWS (who know East TN weather a lot more than a station in Atlanta does) are in pretty good agreement that there's going to be some nasty storms tomorrow.

Matt Hinkin agreed with what everyone else was predicting. Possible strong to severe storms starting between 5 and 6pm, possible large hail even up to baseball sized hail, possible wind gusts up to 70mph, and a chance of isolated tornadoes. All the stuff nobody wants to hear or see.

I'm not even sure why they are worried about Northern Alabama. They aren't in the Enhanced risk area, and yet they have a torcon of 5 (While East TN is in the enhanced risk, the torcon is only 3). TWC just isn't as good as they used to be.

don't most of them base there forecast off of what NOAA puts out ?

Looks like the weather shifted south last night. New forecast calls for rain out of area by 1130-Noon if I'm seeing this correctly.

I just read checked the hourly weather. It said that by 3 our chance for rain drops to 20-30% and will stay that way until 9. So everyone please come and show support for the team and coaching staff.

Some people see the glass half full, others see it half empty. In reality, it is always 100% full. The other half is just air. As an engineer, I wonder why they used such a big glass.

Weather will be what it is. If it's bad, there's a chance to sit in some high end seats. If it's great, it's a chance to sit in one of football's greatest venues. Either way, it will be an opportunity to see the VOLS and be completely confident that you won't go home sad.

Weren't sure we were going to make the trip from Nashville due to weather, but looks like it's going to be ok.

Good weather or not it's hard for me to want to go. If there is a team that fits the definition of "cursed", then the Vols are that team. Seems like every time we look like we will finally catch a break and have a better year we get screwed in the offseason. Injuries all over the place, rape investigations.. How does a team as stacked as we were at wide receiver in one single off season get this thin? We have literally every starter almost coming off surgery or some type of injury and the only one that was healthy is now being investigated. It just sucks sometimes...

1 person does not make or break a team. I hope and pray that everything works out with Von and there is just a big mix up but I sure as heck would not let losing 1 player in April ruin this day!!

I know but then my next thought is, North hasn't even had a real practice since last year, or Croom, Smith is just now practicing after a year off, just damn. Lol.

Weather Update!

I got good news and bad news, everyone.

Good news: East Tn has been downgraded from an Enhanced Risk to a Slight Risk. It looks like the storms will be more isolated and less widespread, meaning some areas could be spared of the severe storms. It also looks like the hail size won't be as huge (Yesssss!).

Bad news: I still would bring the poncho, as the severe threat is still present.

I understand. Just don't let it ruin your day. We have lots of things to be excited about.:good!:

GFS and NAM in pretty good agreement as far as this situation goes. Looks like the warm front is going to set up farther north than expected last night. The northern most counties in Tennessee and all of Kentucky look to see a significant severe weather threat including tornadoes and isolated cases of destructive hail. Looks like Knoxville itself may be spared the roughest weather. However, based on the latest mesoscale analys that I just looked at there will still be some shear (wind direction changing with height in the atmosphere) , lapse rates will still be high (temperature change with height), and CAPE (Convective available potential energy) values will be high as well. A glance at the visible satellite indicates some clearing so we will see at least some sun to destabilize some things. The main question now becomes the timing of the dry punch of air. If the drier air pushes in before any super cells can fire then we are golden. Basically what I am saying is that we still have an isolated chance of severe weather, but the greatest threat will definitely be areas near the northern Tennessee border up to the Ohio river. I may just make this Orange and White game after all :)
