Opposing coaches anonymously break down SEC

I don't give a rip if he throws the ball 50 or 60 yards down the field--those are always low percentage completions....

I want to see him connect more with his TEs down the seams and in the middle of the field off of play-action.

I would also like to see him complete more passes to his WRs on crossing patterns and complete more balls in the middle of the field behind the LBs and in front of the Safeties...off of play action....and on BOOTLEGS....

Montana won 4 SBs doing those things well on a consistent basis....Dobbs ain't Montana--but the point is that you don't have to throw the long ball well to win championships.....but those long pass plays do come open as you do the other things very well.

GO VOLS! :salute:

I like how you think watching a game 2-3 times counts as watching tape.

Get back to me when you watch a play 50 times and break down that play from start to finish 50 more times followed by watching Dobbs footwork zoomed in 50 more times and wrapping that up by watching his throwing motion 50 more times. Do that 6 hours a day and maybre you will stop inspiring laughter with your posts.

Jeez man, I watch every game at least 2-3 times. I watched the Oklahoma game 6 times. I watched the North Texas game 4 times. I did all of that while side eyeing a roll of duct tape. So yea, I watched tape.

Well if you watched that much film, than you should agree with DOBBS4HEISMAN in that Dobbs is the most crucial player in the country..

I'm hoping this year when the ball goes downfield our receivers are aggressively going after the ball. I think this could help Dobbs's production some. I like what I see in PW and hoping Malone wakes up in this part of his game!!! Lay some out there and let get it!

Our style of play doesn't help the receivers. Since we are run heavy, especially with the QB, our WRs do a lot of blocking. They get very physical with the DBs and safeties. Officials see that and don't flag them bc we play a physical style of football, they expect lots of contact. On the flip side when it is a passing play, those same officials let the defense get away with more grabbing and physical play. More or less the officials want to call a fair game so they'll let the grabbing go if both teams are doing it and it isn't blatant.

Maybe this year our staff will finally realize he needs the 5-10 yard slants to keep the D honest and no throws over 15-20 yds.... no more bombs down the sidelines.... he should be good to go if they stick to his strengths and don't push the envelope of his comfort zone

One of the best ways to defend against a slant is to play tight D on the WR. This forces the QB to make a perfect timing throw in traffic. Throw it slightly behind him it's a sure pick. Throw a little in front of him and pretty much the same result. I've seen Dobbs throw behind the receiver too many times to be comfortable with a slant heavy passing attack.

I'm with you, but if the deep threat is not there the DB's can press all day taking away lots more. The good news is Dobbs can sling it 50 - 60 yards, so they have to respect his arm and he will be able to throw more deep balls up for grabs and expect the good guys to go get it or at least protect against the pick.

Go Vols!

I love how we're all praising D4H for being so reasonable in a post where he said someone has "no physical limitations." 😂

Look in the sky! It's a bird!? It's a plane!? It's Super Dobbs! The QB without physical limitations. He has transcended beyond mortality and shred the limitations of mere men!

Baby steps man. Baby steps.

Yep, like the play that put North on the path to failure in his sophomore season. For those who have forgot, it was a pass thrown high and behind him against Kentucky. North being the gifted receiver he is went up and got the pass while twisting his body. While in the air he got hit hard in the back. He was never the same after.

Well, now, just something to keep in mind: what opposing coaches say for public consumption, especially anonymously when they are not directly accountable, is not necessarily the absolute truth. They do have their own agendas.

Absolutely true, but in this case, the stats back it up.

Let them continue to think Dobbs can't throw downfield!

Vol fans know that he can, and that he must improve his consistency. If does improve his consistency throwing the ball downfield, He (Dobbs) will take UT to the SECCG and beyond!

Who says "that's not his bag" in 2016. That's soooo late '60s/early '70s. Gotta be an older guy.

"[Dobbs] can't throw the ball down the field. That's not his bag. His bag is for them to motion the back out of the backfield, throw it to him out in space, and then the guy makes defenders miss and goes 25 yards. That's a guy you want to make throw the ball and make play quarterback." -- Power 5 defensive coach

Dobbs certainly has his issues with consistency in his passing, but he was also one of the most efficient passer in the SEC on 3rd downs, if not The most efficient. I understand what the DC is implying, but Dobbs can effectively move the chains with his arm, especially on 3rd and 5-9 yards, basically because of the threat of him running with the ball.

Just indulge us, please; we old guys have watched a lot of football. And remember change isn't always evolutionary or revolutionary - trends come and go, too.

I just want him to do what is necessary to win enough games to compete for the title. I don't care how he gets there...or how pretty it looks. And if it means we run 100% of the time and never pass to get there, it is fine with me.

If a DC is saying Dobbs can't pass from the pocket, that means his agenda would be to make Dobbs prove him wrong and pass from the pocket.
And if a rival DC wants him to try, it's not because he thinks it will work out well for Dobbs.

I really don't expect a serious technical eval from them. I was thinking more in terms of a head coach rather than DC and there definitely would be all kinds of spin, for benefit of recruiting, number one, then to a lesser extent trying to influence media, maybe even polls. Then, with some coaches, it's just sheer ego, jealousy and spite. Remember these are rivals of our program, not supporters of it. Anything any opposing coach says, especially anonymously, is highly suspect.

Man if Dobbs just does what Dobbs does best, and gains just a bit in the throwing game, all the rival DC's gonna shut up anyway.
I'm for it.

I honestly believe our passing game will be better this season.

1...I think our O line will protect better and give Dobbs more time to scan the field and set his feet.

2...I think our TE's are going to be much more involved and will catch lots more passes and I think that's 1 reason buTch moved the Croomster to the TE position.

3...After last season everyone really respects and fears our running game so they'll try to stack the box more often and we'll throw the ball more.

4...I think this is the year that Malone breaks out and gets tougher going after the ball.

I believe all our WR's will be tougher and fight more for the ball too.

Everyone on our team knows the box will get stacked lots more so we MUST get more WINS will much better passing plays and better pass production is a top priority this season and our O line knows it too.

Our kids know what they can accomplish this season and I think their mindset it NOT to be denied no matter what it takes.

Remember my friends, buTch intentionally recruited players that came from high schools that were used to lots of Wins, state championship runs and winning state championships.

Our players are hungry and have zero doubts about what they can and will accomplish this season.

Championships and total belief they can Win them are why AK, JRM and Sutton are still here.

WIN by WIN, Team 120 plans to earn it all...VFL...GBO!!!

Lol they said we gave up the 10th most big plays in the sec. Anyone else see how dumb of a statement that is?

"You were fifth best in the conference in eliminating big plays, how will you fix this?"

I will have to agree to disagree with you on that. Too many slow developing plays that look like a read option but really aren't (Who knows what the OC is thinking). The QB's eyes are always downfield so not really a true play-action IMO.

Maybe better utilization of the TE could help. CBJ hasn't really spread the field that much because they don't pass over the middle much at all.

I just hope CBJ either figures it out this season or moves on to something better. 2017 would be a good time to make a change if needed I think.

Absolutely ludicrous.

After we have come all this way, you would play coaching carousel again, by choice?!

Nuts.

It's an ESPN Insider article so I won't link.

Hopefully that will change this year.

Without Shoop I think we would have been looking at a 9-3 type season.

With him though I really think we have no ceiling.

If Dobbs and the WR's get going then the playoff is in site.

If they are only marginally better then I still think a 10-2 season and an SEC Title game appearance can be had with our D and our running game.
