I was also impressed with the plays Marsalous Johnson made in the end zone. Too bad he is going to be out for the next few games.

There is quite a lot of talent on defense. Berry, D Williams, and Mccoy are locks to play in the NFL. You could basically say the same about Chris Walker and maybe Dennis Rogan as well. The only guys on our defense who look like they most likely don't have the potential to play in the NFL are Wes Brown, Art Evans, and Lamarcus Thompson. And Evans still could develop.

Chris Walker played none with 3rd and Chavis, Thompson played none with 3rd and Chavis, Wes Brown is a DE with no knees playing DT, Art Evans can't tackle anybody. Berry is the only lock to be a high pick. Williams and McCoy will probably go 3rd round or lower. Not exactly loaded in my opinion.

First, Chris Walker played quite a lot last year with third and Chavis. Second, considering only around 2.4% of college players even get drafted I would say any NFL type guy on any college team is a really good player. Even a college defense full of 6th-7th rounders is still a damn good defense. No argument about Wes Brown and the knees, but even loaded defenses in college don't have top round draft picks at every single position. Thompson is a decent player, he just isn't athletic enough to play in the NFL. He hasn't played much before this year because of the guys we've had ahead of him were all pretty solid players. Thompson had played a lot of special teams and did very well in the past.

sorry if anyone else has already posted these same thoughts (i didn't feel like reading all eleven pages), but the insightful coach said a lot of nothing. all offenses are smoke a mirrors. no matter how you line up, you can only run off of the center, the tackle, the guard, our outside the end. it doesn't take a genious to point out what the brilliant source has said. good offenses just do what they do at a level that is better than you can defend it. his statements do not mean he has a blue print for stopping our offense. he simply is stating the obvious.

I liked the article. It made me more confident in CLK's ability to coach & call plays. It also answered my biggest question - How was he able to improve the offense vs last year and even vs the first two games of this year.

The solution
- Practice a small number of basic plays and put in place a motion package that prevents a defense from sitting on those plays.
- Use your strengths of NFL savvy coaches to rapidly determine what defense is being called.
- Practice a quick efficient play delivery system to take advantage of that knowlege & not give the defense time to adjust.

Result - Allow your QB to be successful w/o trying to teach him an entire playbook (Can you say Clawson?)

It may or may not be good journalism - but it makes sense and it makes our coaches seem smart. Do you remember hearing any assessments like this about the previous regime?

Walker had 14 tackles last year. And to the bolded part, ask USC about that.

Notice that no one said first round draft picks. He said high round draft picks. USC had 8 players picked in the first 6 rounds last year, and 4 taken in the first 2 rounds. So, I stand by my post.

Unless you're the one that is in his way... then, not so much.

Physical skills aside, what I like about MH more than anything is his heart and determination. He *always* falls forward, and he *always* fights for every yard, and he does the other things he needs to do (pass-blocking) just as well as the running.

I wouldn't relish the thought of having to get in his way *deliberately*. No sir.

As for 'Smoke&Mirrors', thats at least a helluva change from the previous HC who worked like heck to be utterly predictable (and a DC that was at least utterly predictable on 3rd down).

So I'll take 'Smoke&Mirrors' easy, its not an insult, its a freakin' compliment.

Really? I'd like to see the talent on this coach's team if he thinks that. This is about the least amount of talent I can ever remember us having defensively. And ZERO depth at every position other than secondary.

There is only 7 rounds so I wouldn't consider every player taken in the first 6 a high round draft pick, but still a very good player nontheless. Berry, Williams, and McCoy all look to be taken in the first six rounds as well. And you could argue that Chris Walker, Janzen Jackson, Dennis Rogan, Ben Martin, possibly Montori Hughes, Gerald Williams, and Savion Frazier are guys who def have the potential to be taken in the first six rounds especially the first two guys mentioned. So its safe to say that this defense has at least 6 future NFL guys and possibly 9-10. Vinson is another name to throw out there if he straightens up. He has tons of potential.

Your talking about everyone on our defensive roster. USC had 8 draft picks on D last year. They have more draft picks on the roster.

our blocking scheme is the main difference this year from last. we cut block a lot and get to our second level blocks much better.

Just not nearly as talented as say UF, USC, Alabama, etc. That's the point. Griff gets on here acting like we are just loaded with First round picks, and I simply don't see it. I think we are definitely bringing in guys that are future NFL players though.

It's not Chavis. he said the coach had a reason to look at film and Chavis doesn't really have a reason... unless he's judst interestd.

Sanders sounds logical
