Opportunity Knocks

My concern, expressed in another thread, is that the last few days will probably hurt recruiting as he cannot promise any kid he talks to that he won't bolt once his wife decides she'd rather have the extra $20 million than let her kids keeps their current friends.
the short term that will be the case....it'll take some time for him to show that he is, if he is, staying put.

Billy D will be just fine, he can stay at UF as long as he wants making plenty, plenty of money. He'll still win because the state of Florida is producing big time b-ball talent and he did win back to back nc's. The kids wont care that he flirted with the association, heck, it may even validate him more in their eyes. As for the media storm right now, it'll only help recruiting.

How? questioning his integrity? questioning his decision making processes? questioning his commitment level? questioning what his real goals are?

i do think in the long run, it'll all work out, but in the short term, i could see this negatively affecting the gators....only time will tell.

the fact that the Magic coveted him enough to offer him almost 30million cant hurt and he's going to be spouting off about, "I just couldnt leave this special place, not even for all the millions", etc. The recruits next year are not going to care that he flip flopped.

it's not the message that Billy D is going to be putting out there that woudl worry me if i was a FL fan, it's the message that the recruits are going to be hearing from every one of his competitors that would.

"you don't know that he's going to be there, he can't make up his mind, one minute he's staying, the other he's gone, then he's back again, is that the kind of guy you want your son to play for? Is that the guy that you want your son to get guidance from?"

and don't get me wrong, that won't disuaded every recruit from FL, but they'll hear it, nonetheless...and right now, it would be true.

It may be a moot point for awhile. The current scuttlebutt is that the NBA may impose a five-year ban on coaching in the NBA on Donovan as one of the conditions for letting him out of the contract. It would be hard to get recruits worried that Donovan's going somewhere if he's already turned down Kentucky and he's not allowed to coach in the NBA.

first i've heard of that, and if true, that would seem to settle that little debate.

Sounds like it's not a done deal yet. Here's the link, if you're interested. Most of the rest of the story doesn't have anything new in it.

The Magic wanted to make sure that he didnt go to another pro team.

That seems like an entirely reasonable condition for letting him out of the contract. The last thing you want to do is let him walk and then see him coaching Miami in three years when Pat Riley retires.

What a spectacularly bad way to blow all of that value Donovan had earned with the back-to-back championships. Not only did he turn down the big payday and exile himself from the NBA, but he's expended a lot of his goodwill in Gainesville just as they're headed into a rebuilding project. You've got to think that if UF sinks back into the pack of the SEC, the fans will be a lot less patient then if he hadn't pulled this stunt to begin with.

Remind us all again which states Florida's championship starting five came from...

I guess you're saying that Florida doesnt produce any basketball talent? If I have to I'll do the research, but do I really have to?

Just wondering when Donovan has won big because of all the talent that Florida produces.

just saying that he'll cherry pick the top guys now that he's put UF firmly on the basketball map w/ back to backs

remind me about the time I said he won because of....what I meant was he'll continue to win because of... C'mon Tid, you trying to start a fight? :)
Im still waiting for your football prediction.
