only Butch Jones...

ok, so it's not half.

so what? the fact that this guy has any significant portion of the fan base feeling remotely like i do, says a lot more about him, than it does us.

cause all the good is real. and the fact that i'm not alone in really starting to dislike a guy that's got us on the verge of 10 wins and a sugar bowl berth....well, let's just say i want to support a guy that can do that.

but i'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. and butch could do himself a favor and shut the _____ up about what we should be happy with.

"we were really disappointed to find out about the LSU game result, and i know our fans are as well. we hurt with them, and we know what we didn't do to take that out of our hands. so while we didn't accomplish the goal of winning the East this year, and that's disappointing, i'm very proud of the effort out team put on the field tonight in getting a win over Missouri. i'm proud that the fans stayed with us in the game, the Neyland affect has been great this year, so we certainly appreciate Volnation staying with us this year. we were 1-0 this week, and we're going to try and be 1-0 next week, and see what doors open for team 120 after that. but that's the only thing we can control at this point, and there's still a lot to play for in the Vanderbilt game, and we're going to get prepared to play a tough in state rivalry game"

infinitely better than "we never talked about it" "we won 8 games" "we're going to a bowl".
Why do you give a rats @$$ what he says to the media and who cares about his cliches. That is meaningless to me.

I'm concerned with what he does on the field (games and practice) and recruiting. His job is not to please us with his words but with results.

If you want to hate him because we have 3 losses instead of 2 and missed out on the East, then by all means, hate his guts. But to let what he says to the media influence whether you like him or not seems ridiculous to me IMO.

Believe it or not Butch has responsibilities to these kids outside of football. His teams have done well in the classroom, appear to mature in their time here, and do plenty in the community. That's his point.. and it's a very valid one.

Yeah, but that part doesn't affect the fans who just want what they want out of it. :)

it may be. maybe i just want to feel better about not winning the East. maybe i want our coach to have a clue about how disappointing it is not only to him and the players, but to the fans as well.

maybe i'm asking too much. maybe i'm just selfish.

all completely possible. i've defended his coach speak and cliches before. i know what he's going to say. it's been the same for 4 years, no reason not to expect anything different at this point.

i should just be happy.

I agree with OP here. There's a LOT to like about Butch, and there's a LOT to dislike. Most of the things to dislike are things he says. Most of what he does on the field and in the community are very likeable.

He's a walking talking contradiction, for sure. And yes he definitely needs PR help. THat would solve a lot of the problems IMO. Hopefully one day soon he'll work for a grown-up administration and be able to get the help he needs.

Projected SEC standings entering Week 13:

SEC WEST SEC EAST
Alabama (13-0, 9-0)** Florida (8-4, 6-3)**
Auburn (8-4, 5-3) Tennessee (9-3, 5-3)
LSU (7-4, 5-3) Georgia (8-4, 4-4)
Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4) Kentucky (6-6, 4-4)
Arkansas (8-4, 4-4) South Carolina (6-6, 3-5)
Miss State (5-7, 3-5) Vanderbilt (5-7, 2-6)
Ole Miss (5-7, 2-6) Missouri (3-9, 1-7)

**Including SEC title game

It is hard to believe the lack of understanding demonstrated on this board. It seems like some on this board know exactly how to manage a college football program. I for one would not know where to begin. I can however look objectively at the performance of this team. It seems to me that this team has improved each year sense Butch arrived. He not only has improved the Won/Lose record of the team. He has improved the quality/behavior of the players. The image
of the program. The graduation and GPA scores of the players/students. I am not sure you can ask for much more.

I have been telling you guys for 3 years now..........Butch Jones is a PHONEY. As you give this SAME talent that we've had the last 2 years to either Dan Mullen or Hugh Freeze and I guarantee you we wouldv been SEC Champions both years.........Let me know when Butch says WE HAVE GOT TO COACH BETTER which means teaching kids techniques in tackling, route running, teaching them to get in the WEIGHT ROOM, etc., but he has done that and oh by the way........ Remember 2 yrs ago when he was all bragadocious on how many guys squat over 600 lbs...."whatever happened to him speaking on how much players have gotten stronger".... as that was his excuse before "we are just not strong enough" ok now you are but when are you going to say, "we are just not good enough coaches" because you have the talent, speed, and strength............as all those were EXCUSES in the past....

could make a season that we could go to the Sugar Bowl, make me hate the guy. at this point i'm fine with him not doing post game or weekly pressers.

can he please hire a PR guy? i swear, i think if he just had a clue on how to communicate in a manner that didn't drive every one nuts, a lot of people wouldn't be on his back right now.

do you know how bad this fan base and this program wants to support a coach that just beat GA and FL, and may get TN to the Sugar bowl for the first time in 27 years? that guy has 1/2 the fan base hating him? REALLY???? think about that.

the fact that it doesn't, or that it's split at best, tells you a lot about the kind of damage this coach has done by simply putting his foot in his mouth. personally, i don't think i can stand it anymore. i think a lot of people could handle the game day issues, not winning the East, the USCe game if he just came out said ANYTHING other than what he does say. he needs to be seen as a part of the fans, not constantly trying to spin everything in to something it's not. it's worse than some politicians.

own it. stop telling me that basically i should just be happy with not having Dooley anymore. we're not as dumb as some of his comments imply we are. we know where we were, where we've been, and where we are...afterall the vast majority of us were fans of this program long before he ever set foot in the joint.

either he's completely two faced on what he says in public to what he feels privately, or he has absolutely no clue what it takes to be a coach at a program like this. 8 wins or going to a bowl is just not the standard, and not only is it ok to be disappointed in not winning the East, YOU SHOULD BE.

there's a lot i like about Butch. but there's a lot i don't like. and he's making it hard to remember the stuff i do like.

Prepare to be burned at the stake because your not thrilled we simply won....

As a true VOL fan to me comments like our goal wasn't to win the SEC East and we were not competing for a championship on the field but in life should get a Power5 coach fired. I know I'll be talked bad to buy if you defend this you're the definition of accepting mediocrity. I'm so sick and tired of all the bologna dumb shyt that comes out of CBJ mouth. Damn I'm heated and making a phone call today because this is not acceptable. To hell with the 3 yrs 3 bowl talk, we hv won more games every year talk. THIS IS TENNESSEE not a damn midmajor stop gap job.

I agree with the OP. If he wasn't so cliché with his BS coach speak and his rhetoric week after week then the fans might not be so up in arms over him right now. I haven't listened to one of his press conferences since early last year because it gives me a headache with what I mentioned above. He's not fooling anyone.

You've got to be kidding right? We have nowhere near the depth that Bama has nor the talent across the board. While we've closed the gap, we still have a ways to go. All you have to do is look at who we have starting on D due to injuries and you'll see where our depth is. While we match up in skill positions (except perhaps some positions in the secondary), we are nowhere near Bama on the O line or defensive line.

'we haven't won 8 games in a while around here".

Really? Only last year.

It's s##t like that..that makes people ticked off.

Also, this whole attitude that he did us all this great favor for gracing us with coming to a legendary SEC program and "saving us".

and i'll be honest....it's only been recently that i just can't take it anymore. i've actually defended his coach speak cliche's in the past.

i don't want to care what he says, i can put it that way. in the end i know that it doesn't have a thing to do with what happens on Saturdays.

and maybe i want to like the guy too much vs. just letting results speak for themselves.

but at a program like this, he just doesn't do himself any favors when he loses games like USCe, doesn't win the East as a result, AND says the kind of stuff he's been saying lately.

i'll concede that it really doesn't matter. will i be happy if we do wind up with 10 wins and a Sugar bowl trophy? yeah, i will. will i tell you that's progress....yes i will. i've posted hundreds of time on this site about all the positive things he's been for this program. so i feel pretty confident in making my opinion on this as a well informed, and pretty fair minded fan (stj, you and i have had spirited conversations on this in the past, and i'm not aiming this at you, rather just using your post to tell the rest of the story)

i still have serious reservations though as to whether or not he has the chops to win a real championship, and his public persona will be on that list of reasons why, until we do.

and i don't have any real issue with the life champion comment. it's just a little corny. past that, it doens't bother me like it has some. my issues have more to do with comments made in respect to the standards this program has vs. being told what we should just be happy with.

Jones needs to take a cue from Bellichick and say less and answer questions directly.

He seems to have some incessant need to prove he is the smartest guy in the room during these PC's though.

This has to be one of the more tone-deaf quotes in recent Vol history. Dating back to Fulmer's magic dust days or Dooley's reign of BS anyway.

All he needed to say was they were very disappointed that they didn't meet their( his own which he said earlier in the PC actually) stated goals of winning a title and he felt bad for the seniors but felt they would be successful or something to that effect.

The incessant coach speak indicates some real personality deficits. Not a problem as long as you produce 'cause winning fixes everything. This season was a continuation of "just good enough" and no excellence.

I have never like Sgt Carter, and likely never will. I would really enjoy liking a coach for a change, but CBJ makes it very difficult.

I actually agree, and I'm no "negavol" and think Butch should get somewhat of a stay because of the ungodly amount of injuries, but just stop talking. We don't wanna hear it anymore. No more bricks and bowl trophies and happy 8 win seasons, just go win games. The only real info we want is injury info week to week and he don't give much of that up anyway.

Huge Freeze beat bama back to back w/ less talent than we have and Mullen won games and was #1 in the country with a 1-man team (dak presscot)
