Only 2 weeks left until Spring practice begins!

He was a first time HC at COLUMBIA. George Seifert went 3-15 at Cornell...winning record and 2 Super Bowl wins with the 49ers. Couple that with Belichick and you realize the value of judging a coach on ONE experience. The better one's learn from it. And Wade Phillips is an example of valuing a brilliant coordinator and average HC. We're in great hands...you'll buy what's left...later on.

God Himself couldn't coach Columbia to a winning record.

I'm most interested to see which guys do/don't change positions and seeing how the secondary shakes out.

Will Gaulden move to safety?
Will Jennings stay at WR?
Does Shoop keep Austin Smith at LB, or does he see him as a hand in the dirt guy?
Does Foreman keep the nickel spot locked down?
Who takes the lead at Safety and do position switches have an impact on that?
Do Osborne and/or Henderson get looks on the outside or inside?
Where does the staff put Abernathy?

I was curious about how much more we had to wait, and it looks like it begins March 7th, in 2 weeks! I'm glad February is a short month, and I'm looking forward to something positive to talk about. I've been laid up with the flu for almost a week and checking volnation daily.

I'm not completely sold on Shoop, but even if he's only equal to Jancek (most here say he's much better), I do think having a new coordinator will energize the players. I know he won't be bringing an entire shift in idealogy, but just doing different drills with a different voice screaming at you will get you to move a little quicker.

Well, here's a couple questions to get this Spring practice thread rolling, some of which has been discussed at other times and places.
Which newcomers are going to make the biggest impact in the spring? Who's the first to lose a black stripe? What position battles are you looking forward to the most?

Looking forward to your posts, and hoping I made some football junkie a little happier when they realized it's almost time for Spring football!

I want to see what Shoop can do myself. I wasn't sold on him at 1st, but after a few interviews and watching past videos of the D he has coached i'm kinda gitty.

Shoop will run more zone blitz schemes. We should see an uptick in turnovers while running more zone coverages. While he was at Vandy, he ran some complex man zone packages as well.

The effect of this will be, kids that can grasp and execute his complex D coverages will get playing time over kids that may be more talented but less able to grasp and execute. Don't be surprised to see different faces than what we're used to seeing, especially on 3rd & 4th down.

As far as Shoop and his coaching, he lead PSU as the #1 ranked 4th down defense in the nation last year. How do you think our season may have been different if we had had the #1 ranked defense on 4th down? Take a second and google what our 4th down defense was last year, and I think it will become more clear as to why a change had to be made, or you can just think back to the UF and OU games.

yeah, I have heard that before. Our 3rd down defense was better than Penn State's 3rd down defense. I don't know about you, but I would much rather have a better 3rd down defense than 4th down defense. That's probably not the popular opinion given those 4th quarter 4th down problems last year.

Big might for number 6. Austin Smith was underrated, but Derek Barnett is more gifted. So is Jalen Hurd. Those two guys are rare talents. And theyre both from Mid-State.

Okay, who do I look to emerge? Watch out for Jack Jones.
Drew is not a lock to start. He will have to earn that spot.

Marquil Orsborne at NB. With Cam probably taking the spring off, Foreman gets reps at the CB spot opposite of Martin. Osbourne will make some noise this spring.

Evan Berry. This will be the MVP of the spring.

Sheriron Jones. Time to see why he came back...

No baseball for Dobbs. Time to get better.

Jauan Jennings begins his routine as the next Quentin Hancock (Spring Monster)... kidding! Jennings and Preston Williams put on a show.

.... Paul Bain will get some work with dismissal of A Johnson. He might even pass Vickers. Seriously.

Look for Austin Smith to push Vereen. Kyle Phillips is next man up from Derek B.

Finally, Darrin Kirkland Jr. Really takes the reins of the defense in the spring.

Big Spring. We're the most talented team in the SEC East. Lets see where that goes...

Austin Smith will push for playing time at end but I believe Kongbo will be Vareen's main competition for that other D-End spot. As far as raw talent goes, Kongbo and Phillips are our most talented ends. Kongbo's spot in the rotation/playing time will depend on how quickly he picks up the nuances of playing defensive end in the SEC as well as understanding the defense. But, physically, this guy is already a freak.

Preston. If he has a good year it would have to help our chances with Tee and other top WRs. Cmon Preston. Also Malone having a break out year at the same time would be nice. That would also mean Dobbs would need to have a turn the corner type year with his accuracy. If I had a wish for Spring into fall camp it would be the emergence of Dobbs' arm and those two, PW and Malone to compliment that running game. Unstoppable.

I think this will be Josh Smith's year! I'd also like to see Kamara and Hurd on the field together more. With the offensive weapons and another year of improvement from the O-line, Dobbs shouldn't need to run nearly as much.

On the defensive side, I think Evan Berry will turn into a great safety but I'd like to see how Elliot improves as well as Dillon Bates.

Don't be surprised if there are stories of sexual assault by the players during spring practice because one guy landed on top of another. This crap is getting out of hand. At this point, I don't think I would allow our female reporter to report on spring training or she'll be called to testify by the crazy money grabbers.

I'd like to see more Hurd/Kamara formations as well. I'd also like to see some 2TE sets with Wolf and Croom. Could cause some mismatch problems for opposing defenses.
