One Play Players

Shaun Ellis in 98. He was a first round pick who played over a decade in the league so not really a One Play Wonder guy, but that was a good one that was kinda the difference in the game

Could not remember…. He took forever with a 5-6 player convoy…. Was that the same day Lewis went down? Those Auby games all run together.

I have an old VHS tape of highlights and, in one of those plays, the opponent threw a long pass. Our defender absolutely lit the receiver up just as the ball arrived. When he did, the receiver’s mouth piece went flying! Now, this would have been in the 80’s. It may have been against Rutgers. I can’t remember who our (the) DB was.

That was one of the best games I have seen a " not so good" Tennessee teams play. I almost didn't go to that game, but decided to go just to see, in person, Billy Cannon play. I would still be kicking myself if I had not gone to the game.
Unfortunately since the Vols lost the next 3 games to Ole Miss, UK and Vandy to close out the season that game doesn't get the recognition it should have.

I was sitting on about the 40th row of Section A so the, "STOP," happened right in front of us. And no he didnt make it, close but just a tad short.

Leonard Scott kickoff return for a TD (don’t recall the opponent). I thought he was gonna set records after that with his track speed. Not sure he got past the 30 yard line ever again. Definitely a one hit wonder

Good read—Billy Cannon A Long, Long Run. Cannon was a physical specimen in the 1950s. And quite a character as a pro with Houston and the Oakland Raiders. Later became a dentist and served time in the big house for counterfeiting.

Another game where we ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard but the 2016 Texas A&M game was a fun one. Dobbs was a warrior and this was Kamara's coming out party after riding the bench behind Jalen Hurd for most of the year. But the play of the game happened late if the 4 QTR. With less than 2 minutes left in the game and the vols down 35-28, TAM broke a long run down the left side. Malik Foreman never gave up and after 30+yards caught the running back and punch out the football right before he crosssed the goal line causing a touchback. UT would get the ball and score sending the game into overtime.

Some historical leaning guy help me out. Just watched the replay of that play and about 20 rows of seats in N endzone…. My early 60’s memories just remember the hill, analog scoreboard and cannon. Where has my brain gone wrong?

Not really a great season, but Tyler Bird took an out route 50 yards for a TD against MS state to seal the deal. Had always thought he’d be a stud with how fast he was. That was the only play I remember him showcasing his speed

I just watched Billy Ratliff’s play again. He blew up the OL, causing him to step back and onto the QB’s foot, causing the QB to stumble and lose the ball, which Ratliff fell upon to claim possession. Perfect.

Still, at the time, I was fearful that the refs would say that the QB downed the ball before losing possession. Fortunately, they called the turnover.
Funny thing about the Ratliffe play is it should have never happened if the dumbass SEC referee knew the rules. On the long snap over the Arky punters head he gave us a safety when their punter while chasing the ball kicked it through the end zone from about the 15. The official called it a safety when the correct call should have been our possession half the distance from the 15 so we would have had first and goal from about the 7.

The LSU game was in 1959. I don’t think the cannon that was fired off after TDs made its appearance until the mid 60s. I sat in those north end zone bleachers in early 60s when kids could buy a ticket for $1.

Tennessee was not a good team that year

Tennessee did not have a very good team that year, but they beat a really good LSU team that day. I think Gene Etter had a good day that afternoon, but the defense had a great day.

That might be just a skosh dismissive. Scott is 3rd all time in yardage behind only Gault and Evan Berry and 18th all time in SEC history.
