One Play Players

Aaron Hayden was not a one hit wonder though. He was an important and significant contributor and went on the be drafted in the NFL. Shared the backfield with Little Man Stewart, who got the lion's share, but Aaron was a great ball player.
I almost didn’t list him for that exact reason. Still, he was mostly the backup getting 5-10 carries and playing on 3rd down.

Cool thread idea. Don’t think I’ve ever seen this one before….

Bill Duff blowing up Eddie George on 4th down in the Citrus Bowl.

Von Reeves takes an End Around from TE and throws a bomb to Carl Pickens to break open the 90 Florida game.

Mose Phillips takes a screen pass the distance across a flooded field against Florida and poses in the end zone.

Darrin Miller intercepts a toss sweep and returns it 96 yards (87 opener?).

Aaron Hayden go ahead TD on a screen pass against Notre Dame.

Derrick Tinsley end around on 4th down against Miami.

And the winner…Billy Ratliff decides Arkansas isn’t going to ruin the 98 season.

I just watched Billy Ratliff’s play again. He blew up the OL, causing him to step back and onto the QB’s foot, causing the QB to stumble and lose the ball, which Ratliff fell upon to claim possession. Perfect.

Still, at the time, I was fearful that the refs would say that the QB downed the ball before losing possession. Fortunately, they called the turnover.

Two memorable one hit wonders come to mind, but were loses. Kelsey Finch 99 yard run in 1977 against Florida. Pete Panuska 100 yard kickoff return in 1984 Sun Bowl against Maryland after we had blown a 21-0 halftime lead to fall behind 22-21 (but we still lost). Interestingly that same Maryland team came from 31-0 at halftime to beat Miami earlier in the year.

The Ratliff play almost caused me to have a coronary in the upper deck. The word "stunned" is such an inadequate one to use.

Paul Bain comes to mind.

Was literally a running joke on here for years through no fault of his own. But blocked the kick that won us that Georgia Tech game we had zero business winning.

While I agree with the sentiment, I don't think Paul Bain was ever really a joke on here. It was more of a Paul Bunyan type tall tales kind of thing. All in good fun. Didn't somebody on bere run into him at Dollywood or something and he confirmed he had seen it and thought it was hilarious?

In the end, he is good dude who worked his butt off. I'm not really one to make fun of a very large man who takes care of his business lol.

Gotta admit, us winning that game was a double edged sword in the end. If we had lost that game, Botch may have been gone a few weeks sooner.

I think that's the MD team that Beano Cook had picked in preseason to win the NC. Either that team or the one before it.

How about this one? This is not a one play, but a two play hero. Antonio Wardlow an upperclassmen backup defensive back. He had a huge block pumt and recovery against Georgia in Athens in a big victory that also landed him on the cover of sports illustrated. And second to end the season, Antonio intercepted the Wisconsin quarterback to seal the victory and the bowl game. Both plays were huge in big wins at the end of the Fulmer era. Couldn't remember another play that Antonio ever made in his entire career.

Great example and awesome pics. Thank you. I had completely forgotten about Wardlow.

Cool thread!
Mose Phillips scoring that TD against UF in the pouring rain.
Mose also had a forgotten play because we lost, but in terms of sheer wow factor, he scored a TD against South Carolina in 1992 that was ridiculous. I think even the Gamecock water boys tried to tackle him, but he ran through the entire state to get there.

Then the 2 point conversion failed, and we lost.

Darrin Miller's near 100 yard TD return after intercepting a pitch in the Iowa backfield in the 1987 Kickoff Classic.

Probably also the longest play in Tennessee history in terms of the time it took because Darrin wasn't the fastest guy around.

In 1977, Kelsey Finch had me 99 yard run from scrimmage in Gainesville. It is still the longest r.un from scrimmage in Tennessee football history. I know we have had a couple of kickoff, punt returns, and/or interceptions TDs which were 100 yards. I remember Millers‘s run and I thought he was never going to get to the end zone. I wondered why their offensive players were not running him down. I still don’t know why.

Steve Wold fullback from late 60s to 1970. 82 yard TD run vs Vandy in 1969 was the longest in school history at that time

Who was the kid that caught Shular’s 4th down pass against Georgia, in ‘92 I believe?
