Lord Almighty!
How many times does it need to be said? Montana makes more money hosting a D2 team in Missoula than traveling to Knoxville.
We kick the crap out of N Texas in the computer rankings and only strengthen your BCS rankings far more than N Texas could ever do. Not only that, but it counts towards your bowl eligibility.
Farg!
You are correct on both accounts. It is a nice payday and an awesome venue. Just pointing out UM doesn't need to play up a level to help out the athletic budget like many other FCS programs.
Really? not according to your AD.
With state funding flat and student athletic fees holding tight, and with expenses growing year-by-year at a steady pace (at least $250,000 per year alone in just scholarship costs and related room/board costs for out student-athletes), we find ourselves at a cross roads. With revenues presently capped at about $13 million per year, we are having to find ways to cut expenses… and one option may have to be scholarships to out-of-state student athletes if we cannot find new revenue sourcesWith state funding flat and student athletic fees holding tight, and with expenses growing year-by-year at a steady pace (at least $250,000 per year alone in just scholarship costs and related room/board costs for out student-athletes), we find ourselves at a cross roads. Now we face the ever-mounting challenge of how to produce more revenue?
Looking at our present revenue structure, one way to increase funding is to consider a move to the Football Bowl Subdivision (NCAA revenues, game guarantees, television, conference dollars and corporate dollars are significantly higher.......
So according to you, UM is playing the Vols for the heck of it but according to the head of your athletic department they are struggling to find sources of revenue. Always follow the benjamins.
Some quotes from the same letter....
--- We are NOT guaranteed home playoff games. We have been extremely fortunate in the past. To put in perspective, we made about $100,000 for the three home playoff games last year – and sent another $1.1 million to the NCAA. A regular season home game nets between $400,000 and $1 million
--- The FCS playoff system is hurting financially. We produced $1.1 million of last year’s budget of $2.5 million. The other 11 games produced less than $1 million TOTAL.
--- We are struggling to find opponents to play in Missoula…. Cost is high, plus we win 93% of our games here. People do not like to come here. Even Division II schools are asking “guarantees” in excess of $125,000 to come here. That cuts drastically into our revenues.
--- Football at UM breaks even. We generate $6.5 in revenues; and the expenses associated with football at $6.5. Thus, others are probably losing $3-$4.5 million annually. How long can that continue at some schools? (NOTE....6.5 Million Revenue for normally 6 home games each year, as you can see the playoff games do not add much.
Obviously you dont understand Montana financials. Yes, it is true that a home game is worth about 750K-1 Million for the Grizzlies, plus another 3-4 million pumped into the local economy for game day. Those figures also come directly from O'Day during an interview. It is a major reason why Montana will not move to FBS. Most years we make the playoffs, and have a good shot at hosting 3 home games. Those games have a huge impact on the local economy. I suppose I could dig around, and find the interview but why bother...you probably wouldnt believe them anyway.
As for the financials, football's money making revenue supports not only the athletic department but in fact the previous president also used the funds to help with infrastructure and such. I wont pretend to understand exactly how that all worked, but rest assured a home game is worth much more than what UT is paying the Griz. This game is about giving the players and fans a chance to see a game against a team from a major conference.
If you believe that this game is about the paycheck, then maybe you should look back at the last 10 years and see exactly how many FBS teams we've played. Let me make it easy for you - Iowa & Oregon. And yes Idaho, but thats about the rivalry not a paycheck either. Other Big Sky schools play not one but TWO FBS schools on average each year (ie Weber State, Portland State, Idaho State), and if they don't play two in a year then they normally always play one. Next year we don't play a FBS school at this point. We don't need the money.

Yawn. Again, check your facts before spouting off. This is from July 2010 when they were working on getting the game.
Any Volunteers?
There have been some rumors floating around that the Montana Grizzlies will travel to play Tennessee to open the 2011 football season. Well, a source of mine says the deal is as good as done. Good ol' Rocky Top!
Griz AD Jim O'Day has told me in the past that the football team would not play an "up game" unless the money was right. Why would they go on the road, get beat, and only make $200,000? They can make that kind of coin easily on any given Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium when they line up a patsy like Western State or Fort Lewis.
Win or lose, my guess is that the Griz are going to be laughing all the way to the bank on this one.
UPDATE (7/23 - 12:44 p.m.) -- I received word that the Griz will earn $500,000 for making the trip to Knoxville. It's a little bit less than what they got from Iowa in 2006, but still - it's definitely a huge payday for UM's athletic department. When a team comes calling with that kind of money, it's usually a no-brainer.
Montana will receive a $500,000 guarantee, plus help with additional expenses from Tennessee. It will be the second largest guarantee in school history, as UM received $650,000 for its game at Iowa in 2006.
YOU might not think you need the money but your AD sure does. Go sit down back at the kiddy table

Athletic fee increase skips student vote
......Engstrom has been working with ASUM President Ashleen Williams, Athletic Director Jim O'Day and others to find a way to maintain UM's Title IX compliance for gender equity. While women account for 40 percent of UM's athletes, they are 52 percent of the overall student population.
"That's a distinct gap we need to attend to," Engstrom said.
Failure to maintain Title IX compliance could result in UM losing its qualification for federal funds, including grants and scholarships.
"They are nervous about taking it to a student vote and having it fail, because it needs to happen," Williams said.
....The athletic budget is tight and relies much more heavily on ticket sales than comparable institutions. The program simply does not have any money to grow — for facilities, for sports, for scholarships.
And the athletic department simply can't foot the bill.
And UM doesnt need the money......riiiiiiight. No wonder youre D1-aa with fans like you.
I think we might be talking two different topics. I am talking about the football program not needing money and I think you are talking about the whole athletic department. The UM football team subsidizes many other sports, just like the majority of DI teams. I think our mens and womens BB teams might be close to breaking even, but know for sure everything else is a loser.
And for the record, you sure do run your mouth like a hotshot. Internet tough guy.

Yes its two different topics but in the end its all about the athletic department Your say you dont need the money but your AD states football breaks even and they're looking for additional sources of revenue. If fb is breaking even then running all the way across country to play in the blazing hot Knoxville heat in Sept is stupid.....unless the $500k is a needed help. The only person that thinks youre financially ok is you. Not your AD, not your students, not the people who get paid to report on the UM athletic department. Only you.
Citing sources to back what I say isnt being an "internet tough guy". Its adding proof. Sorry you dont have anything to back up your points. It must be nice living in your world of rainbows and unicorns.
The sources, while dubious (eGriz, Billings Gazzete blog and Kaiman), are great. They do help toback up your point. I can also agree I have no true knowledge of the financial state of the University of Montana, just what I have read and talked about with all the other fans throughout the years.
The internet tough guy comes from all the little digs you try to throw in at the end of your conversation.
